In this episode of Intellectual Horsepower, we take a deep dive into the world of harmonic dampers, and more specifically, viscous dampers made by Fluidampr and Vibratech TVD. We sit down with Fluidampr experts Ivan Snyder and Aaron Neyman, as well as engine builder Paul Svinicki of Paul's High Performance to discuss the details of a component that seems simple on the outside, but there's a lot more to dampers than you might think.

If you follow any engine building competitions that compete for highest average torque, Fluidampr is right up at the top! The C8 Corvette racing team chose Vibratch TVD (parent company of Fluidampr) 20:17 dampeners for the C8 race cars. I’d like to see an independent, back to back test on an engine dyno of a factory dampener and a Fluidampr. Stock engine vs modified engine. Sounds like an episode of Engine Masters!!!

LMFAO X 10...I have seemingly 6.57 million hours watching youtube dyno/hotrod videos. I have never EVER seen an engine with a fluidamper on it. To title a video : ""Intellectual Horsepower: All About Harmonic Dampers"" and have ONE brand rerresented by 2 from that ONE brand a guy who is in the tank for that ONE brand is an insult to every veiwer you have. In a world where a company can "give" or "discount" a product in order to get that person to promote it is represented here very well.

I wish i knew this 18 month's ago. Replaced stock damper around 320k km. Ls L98. Rebuilt stock internals, balanced stage 2 cam, 150hp increase. Motor was smooth as the first 1000km's then started getting vibration. At 3000k. Pulled the motor and found bearing damage, rear sump bolt 8mm out and front head bolt loose.... Built with forged internals ready for twin turbo, fully balanced again and around 1000km's again vibration. I have just yesterday purchased a Fluidampr awaiting delivery to Australia. Hoping it will save this build. People think im crazy, but i just know what i know....

What is a stag 2 cam ? Is it a 3/4 or a 7/8s cam ?

So Fluidampr arrived not long after this post. Immediate improvement. No more clutch shudder and smoothed out the motor. Now on 11 000km.

@shadowkyun hi, yeah, balancer arrived, swapped it out, immediate improvement, vibration went away, clutch shudder gone, brand new twin plate.......but i think damage was done and it's gradually gotten worse. Around 19 000km now and think cam might be worn. Going to pull intake and glley cover to have a look soon. Parked off for now.

It sounds like high torque engines and V8's with longer cranks like diesels would benefit the most? Longer crank more noise and twist right?

Don, as mentioned in the video, Fluidampr will test it and can let you know if the damper is still in usable condition.

The fluidampr has models uniquely made to fit various vehicles, Visually they all look the same but the bolts have to match your engine, email their website and they will reply with the exact one you need

How does Fluidampr compare to the ATI super damper? I've heard arguments both ways, claims by both sides about who is better, etc. Have any tests been conducted to compare the two under identical test conditions? Has back to back testing been done?

@@EngineBuilder for custom orders they will only make a minimum of 100 units with 50% deposit. I asked them 2 weeks ago.

Classic Fluidampr snake oil...We don't need to hear any more anecdotes about this joke of a product. Fluidampr, along with ATI, have had absolutely zero independent testing done on their parts. They haven't proven or even shown a single piece of empirical spintron, torsional, harmonic or vibratory data. That little torsion bar test rig is hilarious. The only proven benefit of a Fluidampr is safety and it's durability improvement over a rubber damper.

I don't see how it could increase power. Especially on modern inline 4's and stuff. Especially when co2 taxes cause them to optimize that stuff and they got balancers already.

They are commonly used and work well on high Hp built 4g63t’s here in Australia. Most if not all the top drag evo’s use them over conventional dampers. I don’t own a high end tuning shop and build the engines but I assume the people who do don’t just use them for shits and giggles

For use over a stock damper, which fluidamper per could I use in a 2006 corvette with a LS2 engine ? the stock rubber damper gave out at just 36000 miles with just daily driver use no horsing it around either..

So, do you have a better product to compete? Do you have data to prove anything otherwise?
