Even before Noonan Race Engineering completed its new Engine Technology Facility, this was an engine shop we've been wanting to see inside for quite a while. If you're at all familiar with Noonan Race Engineering, its engines and its components, then you already know it's the the kind of stuff billet aluminum racing dreams are made of! Come check out this Spartanburg, SC-based shop with us and see what the Noonan folks have going on.

Noonan is an awesome company and they are a very successful company. It’s hard to keep the shelves full when you’re selling the product before you can get it on the shelf! Awesome job Noonan!

It's always interesting to get an inside view of these high dollar engine building facilities like this one. Personally, I'm a high performance Ford enthusiast and would like a tour of Robert Yates shop, or Jon Kaase.

I was shocked when I watched a video on PLR walk through. They make nothing in their engines, at complete mercy of suppliers, pretty wild.

I would love to build/design a engine. I'm thinking a big block version of a LS/LT block. A m20 splayed main studs, that thread into the base of the cylinder /water jacket area, or the top of the main webbing, with m12 cross bolts, capable of 4.6" bore, with a 4.5" stroke, capable of about 4.8" , a bore spacing a little wider than a BBC , with a deck height to allow 6.5" rods if desired. , normally a 6.2" -6.3" or as short as 5.9-6" with a shorter deck version. Use a bolt in cylinder liner system, o-ring into the block, have a 1" thick water jacket. With 6, m10 bolts per sleeve with a press fit deck plate that presses in after the liners. Working as a girdle with the head studs threading into the water jacket and cylinder base. And using a head similar to the new Chrysler hemi, with overhead cams, titanium valves , tiny springs and stims 6mm, maybe inconel exhaust valve in about 1.925" exhaust, and 2.280" -2.3" intake. And CNC raised ports, with polished chambers. With the heads looking similar to motorcycle heads with ceramic coating in the exhaust port combustion chamber even under the valve cover to help with oil draining back, and heat , the ceramic insulation reflects heat and insulates. Also leaving a smoothe stick resisting surface , used on the piston dome, chamber valve face and back side leaving the seat and stem uncovered. the insulation of the exhaust port will keep the energy in the exhaust, good for turbos , also resisting carbon sticking to the port walls possibly look into a dual overhead cam, using using finger followers possibly, looking for a near 2:1 ratio, with a quick ramp rate, Maybe use a Ducati style valvetrain , the desmo dronic with the cam opening and closing the valve! Freeing up lots of power, could be a cool engine, start with a 4.250" bore, and 3.875" stroke, 4340 crank and rods, ultra light. Rods with 1/2" bolts, the aluminum sleeves with steel or iron liners bolting in, with the deck plate pressing in after or possibly before they are bolted in. Through holes in the deck, the sleeve/liners an go in all at once or one by one. Then a non water based coolant is used, each head and block bank having its own coolant manifold internal. With either a internal crossover. Or a external crossover, with steam ports on the block and heads leading to a -8 outlets on each head at the front and rear. With the option of a block steam port the steam port being ported through the head from the block , leading directly to the outlet, for bleeding air from the system when filling. Non water based coolant doesn't make steam. Use the steam ports with a crossover, to pull a vacuum. Then fill the system until the vacuum pump overflow catches coolant, then close both fill point and steam port, with boost it should be capable of 3k HP daily driven with ps. And A/C, and get 20-25 mpg until, because of v-tec and VVT , and possibly a 32valve option, a natural 600 HP engine in stock type tune, with a tune and exhaust, intake 750-800hp. Add cool boost, 14psi should be near or over 2k HP sorry to ramble!!

It seems they would atleast get the valve covers roughly cast. Even with the walls 2"-3" thick. It would cut cost. And still be a milled billet valve cover. Also a head can be cast in a oversized rough shape to save milling time, and a block thats a big difference. Casting a similar shaped block to be milled . But i guess they know what they are doing..

Agree, he seems to be proud of being so wasteful of an expensive material...and for them to not handle their own recycling is poor business in my opinion as well. Per current Aluminum recycle pricing they are stepping away from at least $550.00 per block waste.

Unfortunately, Noonan was working on some secretive stuff while we were there, so we couldn't show the machining area to you. We did show some of the assembly area, but Noonan is still working on completing the assembly area, so some of that gets done in the technology center as of now.

I really enjoy all of the leading edge of engine tech. The only thing I have a hard time with is the host. Don't get me wrong, he is in touch with all the men/shops pushing engine technology, but as the host he is flat, mumbles, and without personality. It makes it hard to watch. I'm not a hater or bashing the host. He is just the wrong man for the job.

Are we sure this company is successful ? Shelves are half empty. Giant mirrors. Very few desks. Does not look like an active busy working environment. Very oddly laid out very sparse. No toolboxes in the dyno room ? Very telling that they are not efficient or busy it seems. Smoke and giant mirrors presentation. Sad

Did we watch the same video. Shelves half empty? Didn’t Barry say that they were extremely busy. Mirrors? WTF are you talking about. There are glass walls that serve as a room divider? No toolboxes in Dyno room? What about the SP Tools toolbox in the right corner of the dyno room. Sad? The only sad thing is your poor attempt to take a dump on a successful high end engineering business

Coolest engine shop ever, really? Go to the Wood Bros. Museum and see leanord Wood and his machinest Bennie build mini hemi engines including mini Holly carbs with nothing more than milling machines and a lathe and some hand grinding. This shop owner might get a job sweeping the floor in a real race operation. This is an embarrasing shop presentation compared to real race shops.
