After seeing the entire episode, I can't help but compare Jesper to Amaz. Jesper is the guy you want to kill by stabbing a sword/knife to the heart and relishing every minute of it. Amaz, on the other hand, is that guy you want to kill by shooting with a gun and just enjoy all of the blood and head organs flying around the room, with absolutely no remorse whatsoever. BTW, not trying to be mean or brutal. Just trying to compare the two in terms of salt-inducing villainy

Looking at her deck, it's an extra turns deck. Letting her connect and chain extra turns is a good way to end up dead. Josh's deck is also more than capable of killing fast, if not necessarily capable of hitting the entire table. I'm not sure about Jimmy's deck, but looking at Jesper's deck it definitely seems unable to win quickly and instead plays like a reasonable toolbox hatebears deck. Jesper definitely was in for the long haul, so early game he's not really worth targetting. This match needed more boardwipes. Jesper kept the counter up for rift and Meddling Mage'd the Toxic Deluge. One more boardwipe would've screwed his position. Also, strip mining the Cradle, though I think Ashlen really needed the mana to land big spells so *shrug*

It's always odd when D&T players expect to get left alone. It's like how a buddy of mine was acting defensive when he built a rakdos turbo-punishment deck that basically fucked you up for everything you played but didn't put down a lot of blockers and, once we'd start ganging up on him, he'd be like "why are you guys ganging up on me!". Nobody wants to get taxed out of the game and getting universal tax effects out should ALWAYS warrant strong discussions and temporary alliances at the table.

I feel like threat assessment in this game wasn't done very well. As soon as Sisay was left on the board in favor of the Sol Ring, I knew this game wasn't going to go well... ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: Something we don't see (but we do in real life) is the pre-game discussion between players about which decks they're using and if they're at the right power-level for each other. It's a vital part to help ensure someone doesn't sit in the corner twiddling their thumbs. It's been discussed on the channel in the past but I don't think I've ever seen that pre-talk discussion. It's a challenge in itself and it might add an interesting element. Please note this is not a bash at Jesper, how he played or CEDH or high-tuned decks. He played very well and the deck was beautiful (except for the stax). And, as people have said in the comments, travelling over from certain countries with their favourite decks means limiting which decks you can travel with. As Kyle said a while ago, if everyone is playing CEDH decks, then there's no confusion about the power level. I'm very guilty of seeing certain commanders and going "Ach! Hans, Run!" and spending bit too much time focusing on it. While Yuriko is (for good reason) scary, I've seen more top tier CEDH decks built with Thrasios & Tymna than I've seen casually built ones. Seeing only a few further cards (like the Stax and Sisay) should have been clear indicators that they needed to focus their efforts.
@tzarl

Yeah I was surprised that the other players were tripping over each other in the mid game to make deals with Jesper to just buy a turn when they should have known his deck was well on track to lock them out soon anyways. If they had instead tried to team up to force out all the interaction he was holding up they could have stood a better chance. Still a neat game with lots of interaction and some explosive plays!

@Pastlebox

@@moritzhoff6412 Most of the cards he ran were those you'd see in a hate-bear comp build. I've seen CEDH decks win without combos. Stax is an archetype for a reason, although I've seen more oppressive decks. As you say it's the value. All of those 2/2s generated really good value. That's how the deck works. I've seen games won on 1/1s with Edric - it doesn't matter the size of the creature but how you use them. Or what you give them. Or how you control the board.

This honestly feels like threat assessment didn't exist when it comes to the guest, especially considering how T&T Hatebears is such a vastly different tier over everyone else's jank. This seems like what you'd see from a pubstomp complaint thread.

ehhhh I wouldn't call the other decks "Jank." Josh ramped out hard and was a threat very early. Greven punches hard and fast. Yuriko can do the same. I usually like all the episodes, but this one really bugged me. It's like they just let the guest run rampant and hardly tried to control his board. It could be argued that for video purposes they didn't want to just destroy all of his things, but he obviously didnt share an equal mindset when it came to playing a high tier cEDH deck. It definitely shows the difference between a cEDH player and more causal players in comparison.

The Tymna and Thrasios deck is not a cedh deck, but high level casual deck. If it is a cedh deck you will see: 1. the 4 most expensive counterspells (Force of Will, Mana Drain, Fierce Guardianship, Force of Negation) protecting the combo pieces 2. Lots of tutors 3. infinite mana combo to draw entire deck with Thrasios and cast Thassa's Oracle for the win 4. Demonic Consultation and Thassa's Oracle for the win 5. Game over by turn 4 or 5. Nevertheless stax pieces are also played in CEDH table (usually to stop or slow down the combo player), but are usually played in Derevi or Commanders in Azorius colours.
@Tacklepig
@Tacklepig 3 жыл бұрын
That's not quite true, depending on the meta winning by combat is quite possible even in cEDH. Hatebear stax is quite playable and can easily win through beatdown, and combos often would be disadvantageous for this type of deck. Also, a stax list will take the game way longer than turn 5, even in cEDH. The list he played here could easily hold its own on cEDH tables. I'm playing a similar hatebear stax deck (though I'd admit mine is high powered casual, I do have a few suboptimal choices) and I've won competitive games with that, too. Remember there's no actual distinction between cEDH and actual commander. cEDH is just playing competitively. If your "casual" deck is good enough to win tournaments, there's no reason to not consider it competitive.

To me this episode really feels like they just let him won. Some actions made little to no sense, as others have also stated, they just left him run away with the game when they should've ganged up on him to hold him back to at least give themselves some chance of winning.

There was a lot of politics going on during the game, that would swing decisions in my favour.

Jesper brought a shotgun to a slapfight. That deck was not playing around.

It wasn't that much of a slapfight to be fair. Yuriko is fast and consistentent. Graven can, and was, very scary. Thing is that two decks bricked with ashlin who probably kept a really bad hand skipped two first turns and jimmy was unable to do his thing. If we've were able to see like three games it would be pretty balanced.

Just had to throw this in here late, but Jesper really won me over back in Lorwyn with his art and has been probably my favorite fantasy artist ever since. I don't have the funds to back the kickstarter as of now but I want to let you know that I LOVE you Jesper, and I'm happy you got to be a spotlight here. Keep making insane art buddy!

Josh should have forced Jesper’s hand, so they could gang up on him and get a chance at killing him, pulling through so many stax was gonna be really complicated but a 3v1 situation could have turn the result of the game

Hostage Taker gets Sol Ring instead of Sisay? Even if you don't cast it, you can't let people untap with Sisay.
