In this video, we look at how to fit a winch in a GU Nissan Patrol - although the basic steps apply to any vehicle. Were using the Ridge Ryder winch from Supercheap Auto which can be found here: www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/r...

Thanks for the great vid mate. I'm about to fit a winch to my car that has a winch bar. My old car didn't have the winch bar so after ringing around I found that tjm could supply a winch cradle, unfortunately it didn't fit, so after ringing around again Peel 4wd Centre in Mandurah made me up a winch cradle for under $300. It was alot cheaper than buying a winch bar.

U have done an awesome job of explaining it and in a commonsense way as well.. I have subscribed because I am going to fit a winch to a trailer ramp because its too heavy for me to lift by it self now I'm getting on in years lol.Pinch weld would be great for when I mod a side panel on a computer case and fit it around to cover jagged edges. Usually make an acrylic window for it but some nice mesh would also do the job allowing better airflow.

Hey mate, literally just crawled out from under my patrol. Fitted another Kings dominator x winch to my new fourby. ( Basically the same winch ) I will be pulling out the cable and spooling it under tension like you did. I have heard of 2 of these cheaper winches spitting out the rope from not being secured to the spool properly, might be worth checking for those of us playing at home. It happened to a mate on the beach, literally spun the rope around the spool when he went to winch in, hahahaha. Poor fella. Cheers! Keep pumping the videos out mate. It's been a while between drinks.

Yeah shit...right when ya need it most, about to be swallowed up by the tide. Spooling under tension should prevent that. Have you ever seen how they hold the wire/rope to the drum? It's a piddly little cap screw just designed to keep the rope in place 😐

I would recommend a hook bumper to shield your hawse lead from getting all chaffed up by the hook clevis. This chaffing can lead to damage to the synthetic rope as it is pulled over the chaffing. Even an old 80's roller skate wheel threaded over the rope and used to cradle your hook will suffice.

Alex, a hex head bolt is your standard bolt the one you use an Allen key for is a cap head bolt. Another thing worth mentioning with high tensile bolts is that there strength is on a straight pull setting up a winch puts the bolt in a shearing position where the bolt strength is comprised. All bolts should be tight on a vehicle because of vibration but it is critical here that the bolts clamp the mounting plate to the chassis and the winch to the mounting plate as any slippage will create a guillotine point on the weakest part of the bolt. Maybe find the correct torque setting and use a tension wrench. You are dead right about throwing away bolts with no markings cheap and nasty some grade 8.8 bolts will just have 3 lines on the head almost like a Mercedes emblem but not joining in the middle.

NEVER pull with/on a car in park. Even with the hand brake on you can snap the parking pawl. When you do it's a big job to fix it. When you are using a car as an anchor, always put the car in neutral and fully apply the brakes. This will give you max traction and protect the transmission.

Really useful and informative video - everyone talks about winches, but I've never seen the full install with details like this. Big thanks! I have a couple of questions:- 1/ Was that a reaming bit you were using to drill/finish the holes on the winch bar or just a funny effect of video playback? 2/ I can see the situation where a pull has only required a couple of meters of the rope but you have had to wind out a big proportion of the rope to do it. Does the procedure to rewind the winch rope also apply after every pull?
@Alex.G
@Alex.G 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy! Nah no reaming bits were used, just a 10.5mm drill bit (and some smaller sizes to start the holes). I assume the bit you are referring to is where I've sped up using the rattle gun 🙂 Point #2 I can see what you mean. Personally, if I wasn't in a hurry to move along I would keep the pull going under load for the full length I had to spool out. Because yes, it should eventually be re-spooled under tension. However, if you got the rope wet or muddy, I'd not be too fussed because you'll have to pull it all off later to clean and dry it anyway 🙂

Steel cable isn't that bad. I ran steel cable for a bit. But went to synthetic rope because of the safety aspect of it. I don't want to be stuck in the middle of no mans land, with no signal, then a steel winch cable cut my truck or myself in half and still be stuck in the middle of no mans land. Also, with synthetic rope it's pretty convenient to tie another eyelid on the end when it does break unlike steel winch cable.

Mostly good info but that last bit, pulling the hook right up to the fairlead is very dodgy. While ti may or may not damage the winch it WILL damage the alloy fairlead, supplied with these winches, which in turn WILL chafe the rope. Even with the clevis hard against the fairlead vibration will inevitably cause damage. What you get away with useing a steel cable and fairlead is no indication of safe practice in this case.

I know this a little late but I bought one from tjm that was supposed to be specific for my vehicle, unfortunately it didn't fit but the guys down at Peel 4wd Centre in Mandurah made me one up and fitted it for under $300. It was a lot cheaper than buying a winch bar.

How did u work out we’re to drill hole we’re bolts to the chassis
@Alex.G
@Alex.G 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of careful measuring. Measuring from the front of the chassis rail to each hole, and the side of the chassis rail, then place the winch cradle in place and reference those same measurements onto the cradle

Should have pulled the prado then you wouldn't have to continually move with the patrol.

No disrespect... the pins on the hook/rope eyelet, used in anger, when in a hurry and those types of things, when slamming back into the fairlead... over time... can mark and scratch said fairlead.... one small bit of sharp steal because of this will cut the rope. Its happened before. I cringe when i see them like this. Thats my only whine. Top vid, some friends of mine could learn from this. Gleno.

No disrespect taken mate, excellent point! Someone raised this in a comment a few days ago and I'd never even thought of that....you can bet you'll see one on my fairlead soon.

No good at all the fairlead should be the last thing that rope touches when you use that winch on any angle it will take the pinch weld off and the rope will instantly be cut by the bullbar

See, this is why you shouldn’t have left KZfaq. I need simple advice without all the BS. Sad to see you’ve gone (for now).
