I am from the South part( Kerala ). The reason for Islam is that Kerala had significant connection to Arabia because of trade and it is said that a Hindu king travelled to Medina and met Prophet muhamed and converted to Islam. So we had muslims even before Iran or Pakistan had muslims. Also we had Christians from 50 AD even before Christianity was introduced to many Europeans countries. Also we have a small Jewish population ( most of them migrated to Israel ). We have so many religions.

@@smellyracoon1018 sorry, I'm not really a Christian so I don't know much of the specifics of the religion... From what I heard, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus came to Kerala in the mid-1st century AD. I do know that the vast majority of the Christians in India arrived in the last 500 years, and that most of them were Catholics. They lived in peace for the most part, though there have been many cases of intolerance in the communities, particularly between the Muslims and Christians. There is also the infamous inquisition by the church in goa, where most of the native Konkani people were either killed or converted by the Portugese.

The reason household size is larger in India is that it's common to live with your parents even after marriage. So you'll have grandparents, parents and children living under one roof.
@katherinegilks3880
@katherinegilks3880 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I thought that too. Household size and number of children per household are very different. In many other countries, there are lots of one- and two-person households because children are encouraged to move out at 18 and people living in communal living settings (like students or the elderly) are still considered one-person households.

India's meat consumption patterns are far more complicated than that. Even amongst the people who technically identify as non vegetarians, there are many who indulge in only "occasional" consumption. Regulars I know, too refrain from eating even an egg on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Then, there are festivals where meat and liquor is voluntarily given up by everyone, giving the entire industry its annual jolt. Then, Many meat items are completely banned, even illegal. If you measure total intake, then any Indian, though a non vegetarian, would be consuming more veg than non veg in any justifiable time frame. And yes, the reason is NOT ECONOMIC. Delicious wholesome biryani can be availed at less than 1$ anywhere in India. Edit: As our compatriot Sidhartha has pointed out, non veg is also avoided for some time following demises within family.

2 things: 1- the reason for the muslim majority in those islands is because of 14th-16th century arabic merchants that would give preferential pricing to fellow muslims, hence the wide adoption of the religion. 2- i loved the map comparing population sizes of states to countries and was wondering if you could do the same for some other large countries, notably china, the usa, and maybe brazil or japan. 4:59 Probably for the same reasons Maldives is muslim dominated. Muslim Arab traders must've stayyed & promoted their religion there separately from the mainland. 5:46 Probably due to a lot of western missionaries converting people in these States especially in the recent decades. 11:22 Yes, it's an interesting video. If you make another one I hope you'd make it about linguistic & cultural differences between the States, I find it odd that foreigners often think India speaks 1 language when India is more comparable to Europe in this regard. Also make a video on Japanese prefectures & also their flags which are among the most beautiful flags in the world.

Very interesting stuff mate! Few thoughts - 1. As I think most people have mentioned, the non vegetarians (apart from Muslims) eat meat only occasionally, hence in reality the vegetarian % is way higher. 2. Most people are not just bi-lingual but multi lingual. Hindi and English are widespread, doubt the figures presented are accurate. People in the south especially are very multi lingual and speak atleast 2 southern languages in addition to English/Hindi. 3. Lots of people also follow 2 religions/ mixture of 2 religions - For example Sikhs also have Hindu customs and vice verse in Punjab/Haryana. Buddhists in the NorthEast consider themselves Hindus as well as Buddhists (I also recently learned this)

You might have noticed, that the 5 Southern states are very rich compared to their Northern counter parts. They contribute a lot to the the GDP of India as they alone give out nearly 1 trillion dollars as their combined gdp. The population of the south is lesser than the north and is growing slowly, which is one of the reasons why the south has a high gdp per capita. The Southern states also are the IT centre of India, cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and many more are advanced and have an economy based on technology and manufacturing. The north is more culture centred and very colourful compared to the south.

For the Austro-Asiatic languages, there are two branches; 1) The Mundari represented by Munda, Sora, Huang, Kharia etc... Languages in Jharkhand, and 2) Monkhmer, where Khasi (including Jaintia and other dialects,) is the main Language and found only in Meghalaya, and whome the only nearest relative is Mon, in Myanmar.

@@sakagonicdom Nope! I am a Khasi. Khasi is a seperate language from Khmer, as much as Persian is from Bengali, but nonethe less it belongs to the Monkhmer Branch as much as both Bengali and Persian belongs to the Indo -Iranian Branch of the Indo-European Family.

@maiholiaw4927 2 жыл бұрын
@@sakagonicdom Yes it seperated from the Munda, that makes it the oldest among the Mon-Khmer Branch, as it is Mon and Khmer languages (Mon and Khmer has more speakers and are more developed than Khasi), are hardly 5000 years old while Proto-Khasi (which no one know how to speak nowadays) is seperated about 56,000 years ago.
@maiholiaw4927
@maiholiaw4927 2 жыл бұрын
@@sakagonicdom Welcome. Just for your info. Khasi has many dialects some of which are mutually intelegible, some are not. But the fact remains that because of the relative isolation of the Khasi tribe, it has remained quite unchanged for more than 55,000 years! Then about 2000 years ago, it came into contact with Assamese and Bengali speakers, and had a lot of words borrowed from it, later during the islamic period, Persian and Arabic made some inroutes into the language, however, it still remained an unwritten language (perhaps because Neither Sanskrit, nor Persian has any phonetical similarities with Khasi) untill 1851, when a Welshman using Welsh Gaelic phonetics, gave a written module to the Khasi Language. Prior to that, Bengali script was used, but it failed again because of phonetical problems which the Khasi don't share with any other Indian languages and of course the presence of Gender Markers in Khasi Nouns and Adjective, proved quite a burden for Bengali script to be suitable. (Had it been feasible, Bengali would have perhaps been used as the written script of Khasi Language, about 700 years ago as, many Khasi petty states had territories in adjoining Sylhet, with the Jaintia Kingdom being the most important of them, yet, even then, because of the difficulties, Bengali remained a court language of the Jaintia Kingdom and the actual Jaintia dialect (of Khasi Language) remained unwritten till about the British period.

The reason islam is so big on the western islands in the south, is because of it's ancient trade connections to the Red Sea and Perisan Gulf. Islam spread into various non-Islamic regions in the Indian Ocean and further east through trade rather than conquest first (as Islam during the middle middle ages and earlry modern period offered a lot of advantages for conversion to Islam at the time, such as wide reaching trade connections. (and in the case of west Africa a first internationally identifiable writting system) and Islam also offered an escape from the case system in India for many converts too as Islam was not a religion enforcing a strong cast like other local religions in India did.)

6:31 The first tea estates established in India were indeed from China. But Assam didn't support that plant. But some British officers found a read native to Assam and all the tea estates began cultivating that tea. That's why Assam tea is different and has a different kick to it. Assam tea was planted in Darjeeling North Bengal, Nepal and other Himalayan states along with hilly areas of the Nilgiri Mountains in the south but Assam Tea didn't fare well in those areas but China Tea did so .. Assam Tea grows in Assam & other Northeastern states and rest of the India grows tea brought from China.

The Chinese and Tamil communities have celebrated thousands of years of continued trade with China especially in Tea and Silk. We call it as Teh Neer ( Even in China, Coastal areas call Tea as Teh )

@@senthilduraithangaperumal7362 ofcourse both Tamil and Sinhalese call it tea or teh and not cha or chaya. That has something to do with trade itself. Wherever the tea reached through sea trade, it is called teh or its variants. Wherever is reached through land trade, it is called cha or its varients.

Fun fact:- Ironically the tea seeds smuggled from China struggled to survive in the intense Assam heat and it was eventually decided to make subsequent plantings with seedlings from the native tea bush. The first twelve chests of manufactured tea to be made from indigenous Assam leaf were shipped to London in 1838 and were sold at the London auctions. This paved the way for the formation of the 'Bengal Tea Association' in Calcutta.
