In this day and age with the ever growing use of social media, people of all walks of life have lost the ability to communicate face to face with other individuals. Celine's talk discusses these issues and how we can regain our personable skills while still living in a modern era.
Celine Fitzgerald is a recent St. Lawrence College Graduate, and a current 4th year Psychology major at Carleton University. Celine’s passion for people and food come with her wherever she goes, competing in a variety of fruit décor competitions internationally. Her fruit décor has been put on display at such events. Celine also volunteers with the Student Alliance for Mental Health and hopes to obtain her Masters in Social Psychology in the following years. Celine’s interest in the importance of interpersonal communication was inspired by her own disconnect from Facebook.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I hung on every word. I realized that when I backed away from social media I have a lot less stress.

Excellent presentation… I originally came from the New York area. During my stay my social communication was acceptable with many conversations with people, even strangers from time to time… Although, since moving to New Jersey my social interaction has suffered quite considerably. In my opinion central New Jersey is quite an unsocial class of peoples. Although finding good acquaintances to talk with online has not been difficult. I can certainly thank the Good Lord that there are some good online social communication opportunities out there… Chris…

Very nice talk! It is really important to be social in real world. Although FB,What's up, LinkedIn etc. plays an pivotal role in our life, however direct communication with people is necessary to understand non-verbal skills.

Taking interpersonal right now and would love to know where I can find her sources for that percentage that she gave, I know the source is important in general but understanding how they got that number is so interesting I'd enjoy to be a fly on the wall when they were conducting their research

Hi Celine, great talk!You know about three years ago I shut down facebook because I was getting stressed and depressed. So yes, I can definitely relate to your talk whole heartedly. I lost my ability to converse with people in person because of social media, but I'm doing alright now.

Celine Fitzgerald I really enjoyed your talk! I 'm not a native english speaker and I didn't get the name of the doctor who determined the percentage of nonverbal communication. Could you tell me please?
@celinefitzgerald1151
@celinefitzgerald1151 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Efrain! The name you are looking for is Dr. Albert Mehrabian. There are some disputes in the field as to what the actual numbers are; however, the numbers I expressed in the talk are the most common figures used. If you have any other questions, I will be happy to answer them to the best of my ability. Cheers, Celine

This was a pretty great talk, although I think that newer research shows that the verbal component of interpersonal communication is closer to 30-35%, rather than 7%. It still leaves out a lot of nonverbal communication, but it isn't quite the marginal amount that's stated in this video.

I teach interpersonal communication and even within the discipline, there is disagreement on this. The most important point is that we focus more on the verbal, which carries less weight to the meaning. Plus she doesn't mention communication climate and context. Though, this is only a 10 minute talk and she can't include absolutely everything.

With someone so focused on non-verbal communication it's interesting she doesn't realize how distracting her constant hand gestures are

I wasn't distracted by the gestures at all and found the talk to be very informative. I am writing a research paper on interpersonal communication skills, which is the reason for viewing this video. One of the points I plan to explore is the constant need people seem to have to critique everyone online. I wonder, would you say this if speaking to her in-person?
@sarah.williamson
@sarah.williamson 3 жыл бұрын
@@firefighter5212 yes. If given the opportunity to speak with her in person I would give her this feedback. It would greatly improve her speaking skills to not use so many hand gestures, so I would think it’d be constructive feedback. And I would expect someone to give me this kind of feedback if I were her

I am distracted by unnecessarily negative comments on social media sites. Would love to study this seemingly inevitable phenomenon. For example, why did you feel compelled to take a power-dump on someone trying to contribute something useful to our fellow human beings? Are you always this way, or just online when you are anonymous? God is love.
