To all interested, it's worth starting to get knowledgeable in containerization and automation. With trends in IT, companies are looking at being able to scale their systems while maintaining a small support team. Might want to get brushed up on automation tools like Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.

I just started my Linux adventure just about a year ago and one piece of advice my friend told me was, "In order to better learn Linux, you need to only use Linux." With this advice, I've learned to run many apps that are from Windows or find alternatives. Now I have it running as my main OS on my old ThinkPad :) Its power to the user. Grasp the knowledge and spread it.

I am in the same process of learning linux and I agree with you, but when I am working and I have to do a task quickly I can't be delayed as I figure my Linux laptop out. That is why I use two laptops at one time. Many times I know I can do something in linux for example RDP into a windows box on the network, I know I can do this with my laptop running Linux but It will take me time to figure it out which I might not have. I love to use my linux distro but the learning process can be lengthy at times. I am thinking about dual booting win10 and Ubuntu-mate 16.0.4 on my 64 bit laptop as my next adventure. That being said every day I get better and I see a day when Linux takes the place of my primary work PC and I no longer have to use any form of windows.

that's rubbish. Linux at home = you are root and can do everything. Linux at work = you are slave and can do only 23 commands, and good luck doing something smart with those. For the rest of your life. go imagine. If you were root at, say, microsoft, you could destroy everything by accident. So practice linux by not being root all the time. Also forget ubuntu. production linux = rhel or centos.

Watch movies on Kodi all day. Linux is set it and forget it. LOL. hard drive crashes replace it. NIC goes out replace it. Cable goes bad guess what replace it. It's repetitive commands mostly, and log gathering for vendors. Refreshing equipment is when it gets fun and busy. Other than that, finding ways to keep yourself entertained.

well, everyone outside of it production environments is shouting from rooftops Automate everything. But in practice it is always de-automate everything, because at one point in time something went wrong so forever we need that thing to monitor by hand. And then something else goes wrong, and same solution from managers every time: do it by hand. I've seen this in half a dozen it environments. So, you got your fancy degree by studying day and night, just so you are eligible to do monkey work that any child would get bored by within the hour. Day in day out. Until you die. The worst part is that your colleagues are no fun, because all life has been stamped out of them and they are going through life like automatons. Perhaps that is more commonplace, but I can only observe from production IT environments. But when I visit malls I only see dead eyes gazing around me.

Great just great.Thanks for this educational video.Now for next step can be great if some Linux administrator can share his screen with us,how he work in terminal.I mean to we can see one working day in operations,commands in terminal for particular Linux system like Redhat etc. And when he start to explain daily duties to not learn us with basic shell commands,just to said :Ok first of all now you see we must upgrade system...we must make some patches...etc.etc." That would be so powerful to we can see one day of linux admin .Because i can't find on internet main things which is for one work day for linux admin,i only see courses,but in this case live explanation will hit the target. Thanks

Awesome interview Dan! So since many different distros have some slightly different command syntax (sudo for Ubuntu and yum for RedHat I think?) how much does the syntax commands differ among distros beyond the sudo/yum? are most commands the same in principle? The reason I ask is cuz I'm using Ubuntu and got used to many of its commands. Also in the enterprise world (mainframes) what distro is the dominant one, RedHat?

Daniel O'Nolan Thanks for the tip! I have my system dualbooted with Ubuntu and Win7 but I also use a VM (Virtual Box) and the beauty of VMs is I can play around and experiment with just about any OS out there without risking damage to the native system. So that way I can play around with RedHat and get to know it more. What about UNIX such as BSD and especially FreeBSD? is BSD also worthwhile to learn or should I just focus on Linux?

Linux Mint is a good place to start for newbies. At the time I posted this,Linux Mint 18.3 is most recent distro and the much anticipated Linux Mint 19 is coming down the pipe. Linux Mint is specifically designed with Windows users in mind and provides a soft landing for newcomers arriving to the world of Linux. I installed Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon on a 10 yr old hp Pavilion dv 6700 Special Edition and I'm amazed as to how well this operating system performs on this old machine. Do some research first. Watch tutorial videos on installing Linux. Don't just slam it into your computer without familiarizing yourself first or you will be lost.

Information Technology Q & A Show Looked into Ubuntu when it became reasonably functional as a desktop system in 2008. I personally did not care much for the Unity desktop environment so I did not adopt it. I kept it in a virtual machine however. I Adopted Linux Mint two years ago after a trial period of about 6 months and have been full bare-metal Linux ever since. I still have Windows 7 Pro that I run in a virtual machine when I need it for compatibility issues.

This is great stuff.. And know that you will step into issues with Windows 7 and 10 if you are going to try and dual boot with a linux distro. Grub2 and Grub will break when you try to reboot. Windows will kill it by default. Distro watch is a great place to look if you want to get your feet wet. Honestly? CentOS or Debian is the way to here on this side of the pond

As for GUI's for Linux, I will share my current DE (desktop environment) . You can download a full size snapshot here: imgur.com/a93y5CL This is Linux Mint 17.3 (released December 2015) running the Cinnamon desktop. In the image is shown the layout (not unlike windows and allows full customization) with desktop icons on the left, task bar on the bottom, Chrome running this very video, and my personal Conky system display which updates details in real-time. Just one example among thousands. Cheers! I have an Arch Linux system as well but since it is setup running Cinnamon DE as well - not much point in uploading that also.
@epicKiipa
@epicKiipa 8 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify a few things! The DE used by David is "cinnamon" (or so I judge by the looks), and the Linux distro is called "Linux Mint". There are many different preconfigured versions of Mint that come with different DE's, such as MATE or GNOME. Mint is not the only way to use Cinnamon, you can use it on Ubuntu or even Arch, and this is not the only way to make Cinnamon look or feel. The square on the very right is called "conky", and it's very customisable -- ie this is not the only way to have it look. I, unlike David as it seems, prefer a much more minimalist config, others like having their whole wallpaper covered with conky stuff. *You* get to decide how you want it to look, and there are loooots of premade conky configs on the net. +Daniel O'Nolan mentioned "window managers", which *are a part of a desktop environment*. A window manager is what handles how windows are drawn (how big the border should be, how big the window should be, what buttons should be in the bar up top, what the bar up top should say, etc), and where they are placed. A DE is just a suite of various programs, *including* a window manager. A DE will most likely come with its own calculator app, and sometimes it's own text editor. A WM does not. (I personally advice staying away from Mint, due to the maintainers not seemingly taking security seriously. For anyone interesting in a out-of-the-box distro, consider Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, or Fedora. The difference in day-to-day usage is tiny between these distros -- the biggest thing you'll notice is how to install or uninstall programs. But there are usually graphical programs to do this)

I'm wondering that Dan mentioned only the 3 most popular GUI or DE (desktop environment) what you mistyped: Gnome, KDE and XFCE. There are more then 20 but nobody knows what are the most popular ones because you don't have to register or activate to use Linux. Well nobody knows how many user exist and what kind of distribution (and application above them) are they using :D
@k4r4y
@k4r4y 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel O'Nolan It's OK if you don't mention all type of GUI but a wide range of variety could be a "sellingpoint". 3 type of GUI don't make fragmentation in Linux community. BTW these amount of GUI option (I mean 20+) shouldn't make any problem. This is only customization and way of usage (like a 3rd party launcher and unique icon pack on an Android phone). I think the major issue in Linux-world is the "ditching". I mean "Joe" like A distro, "Bob" like B distro and this generate enemy situation. This type of thinking is very toxic. "Joe" and "Bob" should be more helpful with each other. BTW a Windows user and a Linux user should think about each other more friendliness way. If somebody use a car for transportation he/she shouldn't hate anybody who use rather bicycle.
@k4r4y
@k4r4y 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel O'Nolan I'm sorry I don't want attack you or supposed anything about you. I don't mean that you hate Windows. I mean there are too many "Windows fanboy", "Linux fanboy" and "OS X fanboy" generally and they hate each other very much. This is the one of the biggest problem. I haven't any idea how do you think about Windows or OS X but generally an average Linux user (whom you can find easily on KZfaq and forums) could be a "Microsoft hater" or "Apple hater". These two company make so big "brand building" what can generate superiority thinking in their users mind (without real fund). This could start an "OS war". I see this GTK and QT4 force are unneccesary. Cinnamon and Unity are GTK based (like Gnome), right? I thought you speaking about GUI using.
@k4r4y
@k4r4y 8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel O'Nolan I disagree with your opinion about this amount of trouble when an enterpris use Linux. Because the enterprise will decide which desktop environment will use and not user or technician. (Decision makers can force any conversion of OS or DE because everybody will follow them inside enterprice. They can't do anything but leaving. Enterprise isn't equal democracy.) Why should get any user this responsibility? Most of them doesn't understand what is happening. BTW command line is the most important in supporting area because everything is possible in terminal in Linux world. The GUI is just touch the top of iceberg.

2 great books to work with: RHCSA/RHCE: EX200 & EX200 by Michael Jang: isbn: 978-0-07-176565-7 and 978-0-07-180160-7 These are great steps into linux. There is some great info in this vid, but I would not recommend dsl for a starter on an older rig. For a career path? You really need to focus on Redhat or Ubuntu. And I would disagree. The desktop is finding it's legs across the pond. While there are some hang up's foot holds are being made.

14:40 only if you are responsible for 24/7 systems you gotta be available at any day/night/weekend/holiday. Many of my colleagues are divorced, maybe there is a correlation. As a programmer you can work 9-5 easy, you are not even allowed on production systems.
@learnitfromwilliam

People get divorced for many reasons and one of them I'm sure is related to job stress, etc. I.T. is one of those jobs where some roles require extensive work weeks which really sucks. I would agree with you to some extent about programmers not having to be on call and work crazy hours. They do have more flexibility in most cases but not all.

Will it be in vain to get good at being a Linux administrator only to find out after you get good the job market for those skills are obsolete? There's ... Linux vs. VMWare vs. Cloud ... and they all seem to compete against each other.
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 8 жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with mastering Linux. I don't think it's going anywhere in the future. It has it's place for use in many of the worlds companies. Dan could provide more on that as well. And VmWare vs Cloud. Those two go hand in hand and not compete. Alot of cloud computing is running on the backend of VmWare (or VM in general) so you need to understand both technologies. But I will say that in the world of I.T., you have to keep up with what's going on or you'll be left behind. I spoke about this in another video about staying relevant. Thanks much for watching!

Thanks, Dan and William on your responses! I got VMware and lots of CentOS/RedHat Linux experience but I can't seem to get a job again since 2012. Out of professional work for about 4 years. Wish I could do perl/korn shell and python exclusively with Linux. Can't find that ideal job. I thought VMware made the demand for Linux Admins go obsolete since the configuration of file systems to increase storage takes place in VMWare instead of in Linux? Why study how to increase/fix Linux file systems when VMware can takeover that task? I guess "the cloud" is just some else's data center that other people hit through the internet for their desktop (dummy terminal)? Trying to figure that out. Thought I had to ditch Linux in favor of learning "the cloud" hardware/software tech that were unrelated to Linux/VMware. Now you're saying the cloud can be Linux/VMware? What am I doing wrong? I'll look over more of your videos for those answers.

Wow...on the cloud thing. I saw an online article on Dice.com not too long ago about getting experience working in the cloud. The person responding from Dice (not a random person chiming in) mentioned a website I could use to get the experience for cloud....and here all along it meant using someone else's data center. I even asked questions related to that. I feel stupid and totally buffaloed on that Cloud thing from the Dice folks like they were showing off...at my expense. I'll add that 'Cloud' thing to my resume...if that means maintaining a server website (apache), correct? I just go by the latest publications from sources such as ComputerWorld, Dice, and other sites for the skills in demand. This is the first time I've heard of Control-M. I've gone thru TEKsystems/Robert Half too in the past and actually right now...with both for different jobs. I submit my resume and they change it before submitting it. Thanks!

Thanks again guys, for your help. I'm going to put the word 'Cloud' next to apache in my resume. Maybe that will help get past some automated HR thing to be considered for a job. That being said, I'm going to ... 1) go back to getting good at CentOS (RedHat) again. The word 'service' was replaced by 'systemctl' as far as services being kicked off are concerned. Hopefully nothing drastic has changed in CentOS 7/RedHat. 2) going to review TCP, network stuff since that stuff was alway handled by another department when I was working. 3) Plan look into Linux plus, A+, Network+ etc. Already have Security+ certification. I wasted a lot of time putting Linux on the shelf because I thought administrators were going to be thinned out from Cloud data centers/VMware takeovers which doesn't appear to be the case from what I'm hearing. Totally happy to hear your advice. Totally bummed out I shelved Linux under erroneous information in search of another career. You guys are the best.

I was on a roll because everyone who has commented on this video so far has loved it until your comment. No worries thought... I can't please everyone. I told Dan that my knowledge was very minimal and I think I even said it at the beginning of the video. And your focus shouldn't be on my knowledge of the product but on the person I'm asking the questions to. Anyway, thanks for stopping by.

This was quite possibly the WORST representation of what Linux is, how it's used, and it's diversity in the user space! William, you're an amazing presenter and I've been watching your videos since "Am I too old...". I love all that you do here! Unfortunately you got a dud with Dan! "Everything is a file" isn't a Linux philosophy, it's an implementation. "Do one thing well" is one of many Linux philosophies. "Cellphones" was the first embedded device that came to mind?!?! REALLY!? Tesla, the Mars Rover, Kiosks, routers, drones, fighter jets, the list goes on ! Damn Small Linux as a daily driver for a newbie?!?! Come ON!!! Fedora, Mint, Ubuntu, Tails, even Arch (my daily driver for a decade) is fine for newbies these days. Really William this guy just gave a REALLY bad representation of Linux, seeking to cling to the anachronistic idea that it's only for IT elites... No. As soon as he mentioned Yum & LAMP I knew the guy was at least 5 years back on his awareness. (DNF, MEAN) NO CERTS?!?!?! .... William, you're AWESOME man. PLEASE find another Linux guy/girl that reps us a little better! Thanks again!
