Hi Everyone! It's been a while since I have been uploading Pascal's China Lens videos on KZfaq. Reason is personal - moving home and being out of a proper studio for many months. I will get my YT content started again now that I have my studio/office again. I plan to make a video every month on China in 2024. I therefore wanted to start with an interview with Ashley Dudarenok - who is an authority on China's digital marketing. Enjoy! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Belgium!

Great interview, Pascal, great stuff, Ashley. I'm not an entrepreneur, just a consumer in the West, but I swear just about 2 years ago I was still complaining about Chinese made products, how it's always cheap and low quality and non innovative compared to the Japanese or the West, only to literally eat my own words today. In part it's because of Western media's intentional negative portrayal of China, or at least journalistic negligence by not vetting their own narratives, but in part it's our own hubris, the condescending belief we are superior racially, culturally, commercially, religiously, technologically, scientifically, even entertainment and just about every aspect of life. Perhaps that is simply the remnant of the our Colonialistic past, the last breath of dying empires. Sadly, the only thing we are truly still superior are global financial instruments (dollars and sanctions) and the military.

Great video! I just visited China for holiday in Shenzhen and Chongqing. Amazing! People will get shocked how advanced the big cities in China now compared to even 3-5 years ago. Everything is so dynamic and progressing, full of energy! The whole world is not very good in economics, energy issues, weaker demands, inflation... But I see a lot of hope and brighter future in China and East!

Every individual must visit China to see, feel, hear, touch and experience firsthand. China has a unique culture, growth & development. It is so safe and clean too. No other country in the world has so much distinctive service, art, architecture, technology and infrastructure. If you passionate about these, then you will be inspired.

Thank you Pascal and Ashley, for this inspiring conversation about China's innovation. I was particularly encouraged to learn how advanced China is when it comes to aligning e'commerce platforms and ecosystems with the customer and how much more customer centric China is in this regard. From my PaGaian perspective, I like to think that this level of innovation in a 'new country' is underpinned by an an 'old culture' applying the value of relatedness.

Thank Ashley for your latest comparison and in-depth analysis of digital innovation ecosystem of China and the West! It is very interesting and enlightening. l would love to read this book. So far, my inspiration of your ideas are based on three key words: human touch, cooperation and ecosystem. As far as l know, putting people first is the core value of Chinese culture. In practical sense, no matter in political realm, business area, or management system, it is inseparable from the interactions and cooperations between individuals and various collective links to join together and work together to achieve a successful humane services of ecosystem. With a fragmented social structure and political framework , it is difficult to break through the shackles of respective interests to create a complete human touchable ecosystem. As a matter of fact, many companies put profits first before people and provide anti-human services. When we pick up a phone to get a respond, we have to listen to all those numbers and sometimes have to wait on the line for a long time to speak to a human.

Two of my favorite bloggers so far, fortunately so far too from the common very lower level of those talking about China or in a bad way or knowing little about. The difference is top down versus bottom up transition towards preserving the environment. I wrote about this in my book too. If China would wait for bottom up change, it would be a disaster. Luckily they are number one in top down capacity driven change as you write.

China's doing a lot better than many in the west thinks. Their AI tech is competitive with the US, CGI and animation has caught up with hollywood, the average citizen eats a lot better than most in the west would imagine, even their video games have really caught up and garnered some global appeal with titles like the new wukong game, much of the infrastructure in the country is new compared to places like New York, San Fran, and Taipei, the people even if having lower wages do live a modern middle class life with all the modern appliances, smart phones, air fryers, ect especially as much of the global supply chain is in China. We will see how they transition their economy next few decades, the 15 minute cities, social credit system is pretty Orwellian for most people in the world especially Americans. The youth unemployment, fertility rate is a problem especially when 1/3 or more of the new generation reach 40+ and realize they will never have kids but I think the west will have similar problem, many of the current youth will come of age and realize they aren't even fertile, finding the right partner is a lot harder than they imagined, and would prefer an AI companion instead. Even if the population is 500 million by 2100 it's nowhere near "extinction" like Peter Zeihan would suggest.

Among the few from the West who are willing to tell the real story about China. Admittedly China is not practically perfect and as Pascal said both sides can learn from the other. One thing we can't deny is the hunger on the part of the Chinese population to learn and to earn anything that they can get. Of course, in the process, they have actually frightened many in the West especially amongst the Western political leaders whose only usefulness to their society is not dissimilar to those religious leaders of some of the Muslim society who preach their followers to fear their own shadows! The hope for such society is whether they could wake up from the slumber!

This is a classic example of socialism vs capitalism. In the West business is dominated by the monopolies of large corporations who dictate government policy in their favour. This stifles competition and forces prices up. As a result the West will face further inequality, a decline in productivity and an ever increasing tax burden on the average citizen.
@PascalCoppens
@PascalCoppens 6 ай бұрын
As far as inequality, I believe US has a bigger issue than some other Western countries, but the trend looks opposite than in China.

One think that Ashley has left out is the power of socialism. In a way, she has mentioned under the label of "cooperation" but not explicitly Socialism works like magic when adopted at every group levels. Between 1920-1940, we see the same phenomenon of exponential growth in the Soviet Union, which catapulted a backward nation in 1917 to a superpower by 1940. That is a miracle which has now been repeated by China. Dont you think its high time the word socialism and communist became de-stigmatized? Of course such a suggestion scares the western dinosaurs shitless.
@PascalCoppens

Socialism is not stigmatised much in Europe. Communism is a different story. However authoritarian regimes is what is used most of times to alianate Russia and China.

The main core difference from China and the west is that China prioritises unity over liberty meaning that unity comes first then liberty whereas in the west liberty comes first over unity. That is why socialism works better because socialism is about the group first. It’s also the reason why as you have heard in the video China is hyper customer centric because Chinese understand power in numbers. This is also the essence of democracy because only when the common people are united that you can create change and force the elites to listen to you.
