This video is so helpful! Skies can be challenging with the blue & yellow going green. As a beginner like how you said, If try to use “damp, clean brush” to lessen line between sky & mountain (add in to much water) so go all the way down page with light wash & then layer until can learn that swipe some off for next mountain. In Australia green clouds are a worrying sight as they indicate hail in the clouds and a possible hail storm on the way.

Yes, where I live in the US when the sky turns a weird green it means a severe storm possibly with a tornado is on the way. I have no idea why it happens. It just means be ready for extreme weather. Fortunately it's very rare. But I have seen it a few times.

Definitely tornadoes 🌪 and severe storms turn the sky some very strange and worrisome colors. The most inusual I’ve ever seen is When there was a thick layer of clouds above the setting sun. All the colors of the sunset purples, dark blues, and reds reflected underneath the cloud layer that looked like it was boiling. Sort of like soup on the stove. Hard to explain but quite terrifying.

Yes, green skies are definitely a sign to immediately seek shelter! I moved a few months ago and one evening we had snow and clouds at sunset. Everything turned beautiful shades of PINK and Purple! Having come from tornado country it was a little worrisome but everything was fine.

You can use yellow in a sky without making green by using a PBr7 yellow such as raw sienna. Technically it is a brown and won’t tend to make green if it comes into contact with blue.

Thank You for mentioning weather and humidity! It plays such a big role in how the watercolor paint plays on the paper. Where I used to live was dry and I would struggle to keep the paper and paint wet long enough to get the paint from the palette to the paper and have anything but hard edges. Once I made the connection I realized I wasn't a bad Painter, I just needed to either wait for the right conditions or create the conditions that gave me good results. Weather with 45% or higher humidity, or get a humidifier! (Here in the southern US we have air conditioning and that sucks the moisture right out of the air!)🤷‍♀️

So much great information, beautifully explained. Excellent reminder of color bias in mixing. I have heard some say using a wee bit of Naples Yellow or Raw Sienna can help prevent the green, also. The Naples you addressed in one of your other color videos on unusual colors one should be using.

Hi Michelle. Great video as usual lots of infomation and tips like a beginner like. If it's possible may I ask question. Does the board need to be totally flat to stop coulour run. Reason for his is I have had major surgery to repair my neck and need to wear the surgical halo device. I cannot move my head but hsve to use my eyes to look up down etc. Not head. Any help would be great. Thanks Adrian

Hi Adrian, flat board is ideal but I used to demonstrate to art groups and some of them didn't have projectors, so I had to paint on an almost vertical easel. So anything is possible. Just have paper towel on hand (or you may paint your feet a nice colour. I found that a line of tape (make sure it's low tack) along the horizon stopped the worst of it migrating into the foreground. Wishing you speedy healing!

Actually the clouds above island will reflect the green of the island. Where the clouds over the water reflect the blue. This is how Islands were discovered by explorers.

why does raw sienna and indian yellow work with skies? of course even with these it is all about not mixing too much on the paper. just 'touching' on the edges. but these usually work. of course with a touch of magenta as well. but that was mentioned in the video. does indian yellow have a touch of bluish red perhaps?

These colors tend towards the red/orange end of the spectrum. It's not impossible to get green from them though so care still has to be taken.
