Introducing Our BARN FIND Volkswagen Golf Mk2 GTI 16v | ABANDONED PROJECT

In this episode we do a walk around our VW Golf Mk2 GTI 16 Valve that we purchased in 2011 as a 'Barn Find' (I don't like that term, unless actually found in a barn), so we'll call it Abandoned Project. Even after owning the car for nearly 12 years, there's still lots to be done! This has been a money pit, and there's more time, money and effort to go to bring it back after some time spent off the road.

It's got something about it which just draws you in. Not sure if it's the history behind it, or the fact it's quite an unusual model being an 'early-ish' 16v

5:22 moisture is from clogged drains. The sunroof isn’t water tight and there are drains in all 4 corners of the roof. The rears come out under the bumper on each side. I can’t remember where the fronts are. I blew mine out with compressed air. Also look under the cowl the drains in there will plug too causing brain box to rot and water in where the blower gets fresh air will leak on pass floor

Great advice. Thanks very much. I had a suspicion the sunroof drains were blocked. Makes sense as my driveway is sloped so the water would have been draining rearward. The fronts, if I remember drain down into the A-Pillar.

You've gotta love an MK2 Golf GTI... Interestingly, that cars Paint comes out looking more like Mars Red than Tornado Red under the camera. Either way that is a really nice car, in great condition, which got 'protected' by pine needles over the years. Fantastic content. I'll be following this with great interest 😀.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm really pleased you enjoyed the video(s). The camera does play tricks on the colour, and it's completely dependent on the ambient lighting. As I recorded this around the shortest days I lost daylight very quickly and the colour is hard to display. It's not as vibrant Tornado red as we'd usually have it, so to polish this back to that will be a satisfying job! The car is a generally good, I just need to make it water tight as a main priority to ensure it doesn't rust from the inside out or irreversibly damage the interior.

My 16v had that 2nd gear crunch aswell. when i decided to replace the gearbox oil a lot of gold flakes came along with it. Im not saying your synchromesh is buggerd but be prepared for that. i ended up buying a low milage seat gearbox from the scrapyard for 100 euros, easy fix.

Yeah I can't imagine it's going to be a simple fix, although a comment above suggested it could possibly. I'm fully prepared to have to either repair or replace the gearbox though.

@@golfmk2 Quicker lol we are getting to the sharp end running as high as 4th at one point. Keeps getting earthing issues but hopefully sorted now.

Hi...try changing the gearbox oil and putting a decent additive in. 50% of the you can cure the 2nd gear crunch. It will take a couple of hundred miles...but is a cheap fix it. Regards Chris

It's a job I'm not looking forward to, but fortunately (depending on what way you see it) it's a well documented issue across Mk2 Golf GTIs, so there's plenty of information for guidance. As the gearbox repair itself is well beyond my skillset and tooling capacity, I'll most likely outsource the repair. Are you going to repair or replace with another known good unit?

@Nigel Jackson well in my old job I used to strip down and reassemble automatic flight control rotary actuators for Lynx helicopters, and that was pretty fiddly. I can't imagine what is an essentially a basic gearbox would be any more complex than that. But tooling will be my issue. I may have a look on the Internet my self and see if there are any video guides out there and if it looks simple enough, without special equipment required, I may well decide to tackle it!

Wow that's great! They're quite unusual wheels and only found on the One In 10 Million editions or some Mk1 Cabrios. The 16v is a great car. Not particularly fast by modern standard, but such a good, raw driving experience.

@@golfmk2 Yeah I bought my car with the same wheels but 14", and I searched high and low for the 15". Eventually found on Ebay. My car had high lift kent cams, port n polished head, it was running 155WHP, 185 at the crank. I still have the dyno graph. Wish I still had the car.

That sounds like a little pocket rocket! They're actually quite tunable with some upgrades like you suggested. Coupled with standalone ECU and ITBs, big pistons etc then you can push towards 200bhp, which is plenty for a car that weighs so little. When did you sell yours and did you do the modifications yourself?

@@golfmk2 I bought the engine with the mods already done. Took it to the tuners myself to check I hadnt been ripped off. Then on the M6 Toll Road in the early 2000s trying to hit the rev limiter in 5th gear, I spun a bearing @145mph (speedo reading). The car sat at my mum and dads for a year or two then I had it scrapped as the floor had gone rotten and I didnt have the funds to fix it. If I could go back in time and just put it in a garage until now, Id fix it back up and put a S3 engine into it and 4wd convert it. I paid £550 for my car, just looked today and a shitter seems to be about £6000, decent ones £8k upwards, and there is a G60 Limited currently for sale for a mere £56,000. Absolutely crazy,

It had a diesel gearbox with an 8v clutch for the longer 5th gear.

My 88 small bumper valver came with the castellets.... bought it in 08 and i quickly sold on the wheels 🤦‍♂️ read the build thread for this on the forum a while back 😁 love the channel 👍 brutal water leaks man, get the car a decent cover. I had to punt one of my mk2s back outside, halfords cover was about £60 and has out performed any covers i have used in the past 👍

Thanks very much. It's funny how many people still remember this car and the build from the forum. If yours had the le castelettes and was one of three colours (Oak Green, Helios Blue or Swartz Black) and on an E plate it'd most likely have been a One in 10 Million edition! You're right about the car cover though, I hadn't realised how leaky the car was and in hindsight should have invested in a cover whilst the work on the black one was being done. But now the black one is basically done I'll be swapping them over so the red one is under shelter again. The black one 'should' be water tight. 😆

@@golfmk2 mine is an atlas grey valver, castellets were added by original owner i presume, i am 3rd owner, chap before me only had it a few weeks 🙂 its currently sitting with heater box out it 🙈 my red 8v needs welding 🙈 operation spring time is on.... lol

I knew you may like this. Despite the fact it's faded, I have no doubt we'll be able to bring it back to the striking red that you managed to bring back with your magic polishing wand those years ago. The offer is still open for you to work your magic on the black one too. 😉

@Drew and Anita Wagar certainly doesn't. They're all relatively trivial faults (apart from the 2nd gear crunch) but the inconvenience they cause - the water ingress in particular means they need to be sorted and it'll make the whole ownership experience more pleasant... until another fault inevitably crops up! 😅

Those 14" le castellettes don't look half bad polished up but I would swap out the chrome centre caps and put in the old black plastic VW caps instead. The newer chrome and black VW logo ones look pretty decent too but the old black ones are my favorite on these wheels. If you come across some 15" le castellettes grab them as they look amazing on the mk2 and also the mk1's. Looking forward to your progress on this car!

Thanks! Yeah the Le Castelettes do look amazing when polished. I wouldn't go for the mirror finish, as that can be a bit blingy for my liking. I've not seen a set of the old style black centre caps before, only the new style which I'm not so keen on, but will always keep a look out to see what's around. It's quite unusual to find a set of Le Castelettes with the original chrome flat caps, which is part of the appeal I think. I do like the 15" ones but wow they're £££ so they may have to wait! Yeah finding a full set of the chrome caps intact is pretty rare as they always seem to split and fall off. The black caps were pretty common on the early cars and were often found on both 13"and 14" mk1 cars. I didn't realize the 15" were getting big cash these days. They only came on the syncro B3 Passat over here so they are still pretty rare but many people don't know about them so I was able to pick up both my sets for going used alloy wheel price. Had a third set lined up for basically free as long as I provided wheels to roll the car on but someone bought the whole car before I got there.

Actually, having just searched the 15" ones have come down loads in price. They used to be £600+ but there's a decent looking set on ebay for £375! The temptation is strong, but as you've seen on the video, I think my money could be better spent elsewhere for now! 😅

My brother had one I done the bushes on the gear selector fixed all the electrics on it. and the radiator electric thermostat. Plus the Brakes the lot. The car was in bad shape. When he bought it. His had leaks inside the car as well. I remember I looked at the block someone fitted golf mk3 2 litre block. with the mk2 16 valve head. it went like a rocket that car .he sold the car to a body shop were he was getting it restored. I was very upset at the time if I'm honest

I'm not surprised you were upset! They do rust from the inside out though and it's one of those things where you start prodding the rust and before you know it you're thousands of pounds deep in welding work! The 2 litre block from a Mk3 whilst retaining the 1.8 head was a very popular modification back in the day and would give a nice gain in power whilst retaining the characteristics of the engine.

First job is to make it watertight! I suspect sunroof drain tubes are at fault.

Yep! As this car has been garaged all the time of our ownership and this was the first year of being left out in the elements it is the first time we'd become aware of how much water ingress there was. Probably blocked after being in the state it was in with tree grot blocking drain tubes
