This 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI hasn't been started since 2001 and has been sitting even longer. It was abandoned in a barn and we're only pulling it out because the property sold and the owners want it gone. We just need to get is running, get it cleaned up, and get it listed for sale... so, will it start?

I had to learn the CIS fuel injection from scratch today, hopefully my explanation of how it works made more sense as the video goes on... basically it just dumps fuel into the intake with no regard to fuel timing. Really hard to reconcile a system that stupid in your head, I thought it used oil pressure to spin the distributor and had some timing magic. Nope, it just splits the fuel 5 ways and sends it all the time.

There’s a lot more to that fuel system than what you have learned. It injects fuel into the combustion chamber not the intake.

1980s VW/Porsche mechanic here. CIS fuel injection was extremely reliable, lasted forever, gave good fuel economy, and very easy to work on. The only thing that would kill it was severe fuel contamination. Considering the other fuel delivery systems at the time (Cross Fire Injection, anyone, Computer Command Control? I was also GM trained.) CIS was far superior. They only stopped using it because the parts were expensive to produce. Many of your early fuel delivery systems "just dump fuel" into the intake so that when the intake valve opens the fuel is there already. I'm so jealous you found this, I loved those cars. Pretty much all you needed to test the system was a fuel pressure gage with the correct CIS fittings. Fuel mixture was measured through an exhaust fitting before the cat and adjusted with a 3mm allen wench at the air flow sensor. Yes, you did need an emissions machine to properly set the fuel mixture. I had an exhaust gas analyzer at my shop before it was even a thing. You cracked the measured side of the fuel distributor, start with cracking the intake side to test fuel delivery (top center fitting). The device you assumed was oil related is the warm-up regulator. It applies low fuel pressure to the top of the air flow meter allowing it to lift higher supplying more fuel, as it warms the fuel pressure increases reducing the lift and leaning out the mixture. There is also a cold start injector that's triggered electronically to get the car started. To test fuel delivery to the injectors, just remove the rubber boot from the air flow meter and carefully lift up on the plate. A magnet works on the center bolt. The black box with all the braided lines is the fuel distributor. It uses internal fuel pressures to control the lift of the air flow sensor plate for warm-up and emissions. Plumbed into the side of the fuel distributor is the Frequency Valve, which is a solenoid that controls the differential pressure in the fuel distributor for emissions. Later CIS-E used an electromagnet device called the Differential Pressure Regulator..

You should notice the injectors on these early type systems have a much nicer spray/atomisation than what came later, despite their being timed for the induction stroke of each cylinder.

One of my favorite videos is still JR fixing a toilet at his house. Completely random, well edited, contains useful advice and there's plenty of can-do attitude. The type of video that makes you stand up and go tinker with something broken after watching it.

JR puts out a good variety of videos, ranging from property purchases (and restorations) and neat older vehicle finds which he either gets running or he owns them. One of the longest running items on the channel was an Audi R8 (he has sold since finishing it) but he chronicled the entire purchasing of a dead car and resurrecting it before selling it. Took him a few years to finish and the content was fantastic. Good luck checking g out his other videos. They are mostly very interesting.

@@Hard_Right Tell me what US Engine on us Highways was abel to run a whole day on full RPM without blowing of ? All US made cars on european highways are not abel to run on full trottel in more than 15 minutes . My first experiance with hunting a V8 camaro with my GTI was the camaro V8 engines blow off after 25 Minutes at 180 Km /h .... the 5,7 L V8 was beaten by a tiney 1.8 L .

I took my driver's license road test in one in 1982, at 16. ha ha. Well, it was a '79 and not a GTi, but still a Rabbit. We always had such a great time in that car too. Damn thing would go anywhere, my mother even driving it across a creek one time.

The very first hot hatch. Couple years ago I picked up a running '81 Rabbit Convertible. Full GTI package inside. It was a freaking hoot to drive. Weighs flat nothing. Big fun lifting the rear wheel.

Even having lived my early formative driving years in the late 70's-early 80's when horsepower was more accurately called slothpower, I still shake my head at the 90 HP or 100 HP ratings that these engines back then had. That being said, the styling of the Mark 1 Golf/Rabbit was on point. Guigaro really knew what he was doing. Yes, it was two boxes, but nicely proportioned boxes with styling that belied the basics of the vehicle.

It may have had only 100HP but the car only weighed about 2500 pounds. I had a 1981 Scirocco and they were fun to drive with a manual transmission

Unfortunatly the US made GTI´s was made with a lot of enviromental ,, silencers" . The european GTI`s didn`t have power steering , aircondition ... automatic gearing ... bud 110 HP from the first 1.6 L ,, EG " engine & 112 HP from the last MK1 1.8 L ,, DX" engine and a weight of 880 KG . This GTI`s was the worst nightmares for Mercedes , BMW & Porsche on small european village country roads.

I owned an 84 GTI in the late 90s. Fantastic car, followed by an 87 Sciricco 16v. I wish I still had them today.

This is awesome. When I first started working, my dad let me drive his diesel '79 Rabbit that was brown with a beige interior and a hand crank moonroof, and I absolutely didn't care how slow it was. I loved that thing! My dad would bring jet fuel home that was used for the turbines in the power plant he worked at, and that's what we'd fuel up the car with. Never had to go to a gas station. 😂

Had a '84 Rabbit Diesel (Westmoreland) with a GTI steering wheel, Suspension Techniques coilovers and a Neuspeed strut tower brace. Drove like a GTI, accelerated like a VW Rabbit Diesel! Totally ridiculous but I loved it.

When I first opened my VW shop in 92 I had a friend come over with a 84 VW GTI 16V that was in mint condition. He let me drive it and it was a freaking race car. Couldn't wipe the smile off my face. Never forget that. That one is just a 8 valve with cis mechanical sensor plate that when air lifts the sensor plate opens the injectors. They also used the same cis on early Porsche and mercedes. They are finiky as hell when they set.

Yes, CIS (aka Bosch K-jetronic) is sensitive to non-use. When it is working correctly and used regularily it is reliable.

Super cool. A legend. These are worth a lot of money here in Europe. With only 100 hp (110 here) it is great to drive on winding roads. The handling is surprisingly good. I would change the timing belt due to its age.

@@Hard_Right you have to understand, in Europe, cars are taxed according to engine displacement. So, for example, you buy a big car in Germany, say an '83 Passat, prepare to pay bigger bucks in taxes compared to an '83 Golf (or Rabbit) GTI. And fuel is more expensive there, on average, twice the price per liter compared to the US. And the roads there are smaller, only marginally larger than Japanese roads, especially in towns and small cities.

14:10 ~ And then reeving the hell out of it on the first start up. This is armature hour here folks. Replace the oil and filter, disconnect the coil and turn the engine over for a brief time in several increments. Get the oil around the engine and give the engine a good rest in-between each start to coat and soak up the new oil. Starting with premium gas is a good idea too.

My first car was a 79 Rabbit!! Damn this one hits home.. so many memories of me and my pops working on the car.. the 79 ended up being trash so we got a 1980 Rabbit and combined the best parts from both cars to build 1 good one. I was a 16yr old poser I made it look like a GTI Black with red trim..haha.. great vlog JR...

Excellent! I owned a 1977 Rabbit (turquoise blue, manual) and later a early 80s Rabbit Diesel L (air conditioned, mint, out of a retired woman's garage for around 1,800 dollars). The 1977 Rabbit is among my favorite cars ever. I later graduated to Volvo and BMW--but the prestige of those brands never matched the love I have for the VWs of my youth. Good video!

This was THE car I always wanted. I remember in high school there was a silver one parked downtown across from our local church. It was $1800 and I was heartbroken I couldn’t afford it at the time. So instead I settled for an ‘84 rabbit diesel for a few hundred bucks. It was still a fun little car but I told myself when I was 30 I’d buy myself a brand new one. I did just that in 2010 with my mk6 GTI. Now I’m 43 and just bought myself a ‘23 GTI 40th anniversary edition. I’m keeping this one and someday it will be a barn find for someone just like this one. Not too soon I hope though! Great video and looking forward to seeing more.

I had an 84 Rabbit GTI in black with the blue interior back in the late eighties. Don't forget those came with a great "close ratio transmission", very fun to drive.

Wow, I bought one of these new in 83, Same color and interior. It was quick for the day, but ran out of gear after 85 mph. many folks put the standard golf 5th gear to gain better cruising, It was a great autocrossing car and a lot of fun to drive in the back roads of NC. Great car.

@grantmills4184 yes, 4000 rpm at 70, red line high 80's. Great for small autocross courses. There used to be an autocross run in Eastern NC on an old runway, about 1.5 miles. The cars with higher gears would run by me.

@@schmidt28117 that sure is some short gearing! I'm sure it at least felt like it pulled fairly hard. Eastern NC seems like the kinda place a car like that would do best, with lots of mountain backroads for it to push it's handling to the limit. More of a momentum car I suppose

This brings back some memories! A🎉 diesel Rabbit was the first car I spent a lot of time in. My Dad drove a couple back in the mid 80s. He was a *big* guy but happily drove those tiny, slowwww diesels for the 40~50mpg they got. He ran them over 300k miles before letting them go. The ignition buzzers on those sounded just like this one, and the keys were just the same too :) Thanks for this!

*sigh* I fell in love with my 78 Rabbit, when it died, a 78 Scirocco literally fell into my parking space… The previous owner bought a new car, and rolled it into my (then) unused parking space, where I found it and left an offer to buy it under the wiper. Drove that little beauty for 10 years. Then it had… Issues that couldn’t find time to deal with. Last month I finally admitted it was beyond salvage and sent it off for burial.(the doors were in terrible shape when I got it, and the floors were “reinforced” with aluminium traffic signs).

These cars were absolutely manufactured in Westmoreland Pa. Not just assembled. My Dad was a Tool Designer there. It was a great time. Bosses got new cars every year to drive and after the year employees had opportunity to purchase. He was able to get a year old black 83 GTI off his boss it was an awesome car. Dad still has good stories of when the German bosses would come over and take some of them out to dinner. I drove a 84 into my mid 20s sold after got married. Love the video.

Love those Gen 1 GTIs. Had an '84 back in the 90's out in Bezerkeley. Made in the US 🤩🥳 Fun fact: The German/European version had a 1.6 liter engine with 110 horses up to '82 and a 1.8 liter with 112 horses until '84. Reason for the low output in the US was the emissions system. That car looks like a keeper. Would not sell it 😥

You have to figure those horsepower numbers aren't that bad, many of the V6s and some V8s didn't put out much more than that back then. GM's 5.7L diesel didn't make much more, although it had more torque. I had a friend with an 82 Cutlass Diesel with that V8 and I remember him being unable to keep up with a UPS truck one day. They detuned everything in the 70s to help fuel economy after the oil embargo, and as you said reduce emissions. That power level in a small, light Rabbit was probably respectable back then, maybe not so much today. Nice little cars.

@@wolfgangemmerich7552 I looked it up, and the fuel economy as 9.4L/100km city and 6.25L/100 km highway and 8.1L/100km average. Car & Driver magazine tested a 1983 model and returned slightly better than the average cited above during what they called hard driving (lots of full throttle runs). They also said the US model was de-tuned slightly from the German ones and a bit heavier by 64kg (unsure of reasons), but still faster than some V8 "muscle cars" of the era. The US really de-tuned the V8 engines back then to limit fuel consumption. It was funny as they still offered multiple sizes of V8s, but the biggest and most powerful was still weaker than the smallest offering was in the 1960s before the fuel embargo of the 1970s. It was a waste of time and resources to offer all of those engines when they could have changed the carburetor and camshaft on the smallest one to have the varying performance levels. Factories don't like to change production styles I suppose, even if it means inefficiencies!

I grew up with theses... i love them ... I've had more than a few and ... in our family many ... great cars so much fun to drive ... I love little hot hatches... currently we have a 2013 500 Abarth and a 2002 Peugeot 106 GTI both have some serious work done and are animals... I also have 01 Prelude with 54,000 miles ... a 91 and a 93 ls400 each have around 120,000 miles ... a 88 lx 5.0 with 50,000 mile and a few others.... And JR .... been a subscriber since the beginning.... car stuff building stuff tech stuff doesn't matter what .... you make great content.... keep it up!

The headlights are all sealed beam so there wouldn't be any of the modern issues with them

What a find! I ❤ it! I have a one owner 1984 Diamond Silver GTI with a red interior. I have a sunroof though. Mine has 168K miles with the original clutch. I did some tasteful upgrades over the years. A g grind cam, euro downpipe, high flow cats, Neuspeed springs with Bilstein shocks, Technics short shift kit, etc... I was yelling at the video. No. That's not a factory cruise control. One little FYI tidbit for you. That black tray by the cowling has a trad pattern on it. The OE tires were Pirelli P6. That's the P6 trad pattern. They were gorgeous tires, but they were crap. I have Yokohamas on mine. Please remove those awful mudflaps!

Man that is a cool car, I had a Scirocco and loved it! A note about Bosch CIS, it is electro-mechanical. There is a fuel pump by the tank, it then pressurizes the fuel to the injectors. Fuel metering is done through the fuel distributor. When you open the throttle a vane opens which in turn increases fuel delivery to the injectors. It gets a bad rap but is a very simple and efficient system. I would bet that fuel distributor needs rebuilt as does the control pressure regulator. I would contact CIS flowtech and send them in for a refurb.

I had an '80 Scirocco 'S'...I really miss that little car. I stored mine at my parents' house when I was in the Navy. I came back and had all sorts of fuel injection issues. I drained the tank and flushed it. Finally I took it to the local VW/Porsche dealer, and they installed a new fuel distributor. Ran fine for a while but began sputtering and stalling intermittently. I gave up and got rid of the car, damnit! It might not have had tons of power, but that was one of the funnest cars to drive into and out of corners. It had Recaro seats, if I recall. I could ramble on forever about that car.

I had the S model as well, was white with the air damn, the go fast stripes, sunroof, everything but AC which made it really easy to work on, but not so much fun when I moved to Arizona. I had it for 10 years, it was very reliable and practical. At around 280K miles it met the end of its life when it started to blow out seals on the oil filter. I pulled the pan and found the thrust washers inside. I gave it to a friend, but he did nothing with it and it got towed. I still have never forgiven him for that.@@johnhenderson3646

That series of Volkswagen window was known to come out of the channel in cold weather. The glass would freeze to the outer belt on the door. When the window was cranked down, the glass would come out of the channel. Glass installers would use the urethane windshield adhesive to glue them into the channel.

Well, it appears that Jon likes CIS! I've had several cars with CIS, and they are great until the system becomes contaminated with dirt or WATER. My first car was a '77 VW Rabbit, and it was a blast to drive! Great video!

I have owned over 50 MK1's and still own an 83 GTI. If you were closer, I would be chewing your pant leg off to sell it too me. That car has the potential to be worth $20k+ if you guys bring it back up to great condition. Don't skimp on the resto and put it on Bring a trailer. You will be shocked at what it's worth. Keep us posted on the progress. More old liquid VW's please.

I believe I have the working, original rabbit, AM/FM radio for that car in a box in my shop. My brother had a brown diesel rabbit that he put a stereo in it. It’s not as nice as that Alpine I’m sure.

My '83 GTI would start, but not rev. 2 months at 3 shops couldn't find the problem. Admitting defeat, I had it towed to a Volkswagon dealer. They called me in about 2 hours to tell me the fuel line from the tank to the engine compartment was rusty and had collapsed inside, reducing fuel flow to a trickle. They replaced the fuel line and that thing ran better than ever!! Oh, they changed the fuel filter too, no charge!!!!!

Actually 90 psi on that side; need the high pressure to operate the injectors properly since they aren't electric, just makes the pintles in them vibrate.

Great to see one of the "new hot GTI" cars. I had a 1976 Rabbit. It had a carburetor and was said at the time to be the last one to use leaded gasoline. 71 horsepower and a 4-speed. The 1.5L motor was a warrior but hard on points in the distributor. The distributor was right in front of the transverse engine and basically right behind the bumper. If I parked in a paved lot, I could change the points by kneeling in front of the car. I would take a good long look at the gap and then install the new points. I had the car in high gear and would just pull the car toward me with one hand to open the points gap to max. It was a fun car and notice the hood slope. I came out of the era of sitting behind the wheel and viewing an area in front of me the size of someone's lawn to sitting behind the Rabbit's steering wheel and seeing about two inches of hood. Great forward visibility. Fun car. The seats on mine had flax straw inside them, very warm to sit on. When the car writers were racing these hot hatches at Lime Rock, the big problem on twisty courses was the front tire blowouts. Front drive meant that the front tires were steering and powering the car forward, the stresses of which were too much on a race course for the junk we called tires in the good old days. Manufacturers took notice.

Man that one brings back memories! I used to own a 1981 Rabbit 1.7L with a 4 speed manual! White with black interior! And when I saw that one in 83 I fell in love with it! I was gonna trade my 81 for one of them, but the salesman didn’t want to offer me what I wanted for mine or lower the payment’s! And at the time that car was a hot popular hot hatch! Wow! That one is in mint condition! You lucky dogs!👌🥰👍

I had an '83 VW GTI (in silver) as my very first car! Even after using it to teach my friends how to drive a 5-speed, the clutch was miraculously fully functional! After some mods', I even used it to race autocross. An epic little car 👍‼️ JR - Keep doing what you do 😁👍‼️

Nice find! I'm sure Johnny knows this, but with old CIS cars, a big enemy is vacuum leaks. if the car doesn't run right, look for leaks.

Now that you’ve cracked the line open you’ll need new sealing washers. Replace the filter too. Replace the timing belt too.

What a find. Back in my HS days (25 years ago, yeesh) a friend of mine bought one of those in silver for probably a couple grand, at the time. This one's probably going to pull $40k+ easily once it's cleaned up, tuned up, fresh tires, etc.

Disagree. Keep the fuel clean and they lasted forever. Occasionally the warm-up regulators would quit, injector seals would dry out, some cars had carbon build-up problems on the intake from shit fuel. I was a VW mechanic in the 80s-90s and CIS was virtually bulletproof and easy to fix with only a few special tools. At my shop I'd have this car diagnosed, and probably running, in 30 minutes.

I just cannot understand why these long-stayed cars need to get started right away. It does not matter if there is oil or not; the engine requires big maintenance with new O rings, gaskets, etc., before it is actually in running condition. Why not just let it be until the maintenance for it is done? It's sure it will start leaking, and there will be issues if not properly done. If the vehicle is going for sale, why not just sell it as-is so the new owner can handle things the right way?

When I was working on these cars in the 1980s the old VW Beetles were still somewhat common. The difference in fuel technology was mind blowing for a VW.

I have a 1983 Rabbit that I put a later GTI drivetrain in and ran One Lap of America. (We came in third in our class.) I'd have enjoyed joining you on this errand. The oil pump is not running the fuel distributor; it's just fuel pressure and airflow. When the boot collapsed I figured that the flapper in the mechanical airflow sensor was stuck with varnish, and then broke free. You should have heard the fuel pump run the moment the key was turned on. At one point I owned four Rabbits, parts of which are all in the One Lap car. I'd have tried rapping the fuel pump a time or two with a piece of wood; it might have revived briefly so you could drive onto the trailer, but I'd still have changed it. I'd also have checked the air cleaner; they're often full of mouse nests and seeds in a car that's been sitting, even in a garage.

WJRG...Awesome find! I was eyeing a German spec Jetta Wolfsburg Edition back in the day. It was a rocket with the manual sun roof. I passed on it because it could not be shipped to the US without a ton paperwork and upgrades. The number of German spec cars passing hands through the unit was kind of funny. Person coming in would strike a deal with a person leaving...all in the family..for cars.

I have always loved these cars JR. As a kid, there was a neighbor down the street from my childhood home that had two of these. Well, it started out with two in that Emerald green color? His boys were a few years older than me, so as they reached driving age, the collection grew. I remember them having a white one as well and maybe even a red one like this. The pristine green ones were in the two car garage, and the other two parked out in the driveway. I wish I had gone over and talked to them and learned a little something about these cars.

A friend had the 1978. Even at 100 bhp, with a curb weight of 1800 lbs, it was a ton of fun to drive and created the hot hatch segment. I bought a 1987 GTI 16V with 130 bhp and 2,200 lb curb weight. You could drive it hard with confidence, channelling your inner race driver. When it snowed in those days most people didn't venture out after dark. With a set of Nokian winter tires, I'd take it out and thrash it around on empty roads. Great memories.

Interesting video indeed and what a find! As for the fuel pump, you could first try to tap it with a wrench on hand. Been there done that with my E30 BMW. Often it works! Thanks for sharing this video!

I bought a new '84 Jetta GLI in June of 1984. Have owned several MK1s since then and currently own an '87 Cabriolet that we also bought new. These cars are pretty simple to work on, once you do a little bit of research. Unfortunately, I was cringing at some of the things you were saying and trying. Good call on sending it to Jonny, probably should have started there first.

Holy cow does this car bring back memories of my youth. This was one car that I dreamed of owning but was to young to ever have one. Now I probably could not afford to own one. The maintenance alone would make it impractical.
