Looks very useful thank you, will use this on my two tether system for smaller trees, on each tether instead of the girth hitch method which can drop, but thinking of using an anchor hitch on the ring due to using less rope, since I already cut those rope to a desired length, More compact knot, also easy to break

Oh man! As soon as I think I have my setup all figured out, you post another awesome video. This looks awesome and I think this is what I am going to use for the climb up. I still think I will use the JRB Hitch for the rappel down. I think now, with a one stick, I am going to JRB cinch up, Saddle Hunter's Hitch around limbs, and JRB Hitch rappel down. As always , well done and thank you very much.

That's good to hear. Because I actually didn't Design This for myself. I think it's safe to say that I'm probably a little bit more comfortable tying knots than the average hunter. And so I am more likely to tie a Maverick hitch or Harbaugh given my proficiency. But I want my friends to have options in their toolbox and pick out whichever one suits them best. Thanks for your feedback and support.

I think the term tie-in point appears to have become the preferred term for attaching well above ground level on the tree. Anchor then makes more sense specifically to indicate attaching to the trunk near the ground, like in a lowerable system that tree workers may prefer to set up (where the rope goes over a high fork and then back to the base anchor on the trunk near the ground).

I prefer using heat shrink wire tubing over the carabiner to silence metal to metal contact on my rappel device. I also use just a dyneema soft shackle, used in sailing, to secure and hold steady my tether.
@jrbtc

Cool. I considered it but my issue with heat shrink is that we're supposed to be able inspect the carabiner (after dropping it for example) and although we can slide tubular webbing off, we can't do that with HS.

Hey John, had a great climb with the JRB DOUBLE CINCH CLIMBING METHOD. Wanted to share my experience. This method is an improved two tether system . Top rope has the jrb cinch around the tree from behind to the right, and is adjusted with my right hand as you have demonstrated, this rope has two 4-2-3 jrb ascender hitches , the top one in bridge mode with my saddle bridge in it and the second hitch is also 4-2-3 but in self tending mode with a leg loop in it. The bottom rope has my foot loop attached on a jrb 4-2-3 In Self tending mode, this rope I work left handed and pass it to the left around behind the tree (opposite of the top rope) I have found my rope combinations work best with 4-2-3 hitches , trufelberger resc tech 8 mm and 6 mm sterling accessory cord. I modified my saddle with the addition of leg/thigh straps like climbing saddles have, result is better support and comfort. Still working on how to work in a third attachment point to be on the tree at two points constantly, as I adjust the top tether/cinch , I have used a Lineman rope, but haven’t been satisfied

Using a quick link (which I already have) instead of a rappel ring might not work because it would possibly allow too much of the carabiner to go through the opening in it. Thoughts?

I like that option for sure. Here’s a question, can it be as stable without using the repel ring by using some kind of knot with a loop on the end?
@jrbtc
@jrbtc 2 жыл бұрын
I can't recommend that. Even if you tied the perfect sized loop, it won't be as easily adjustable due to the rope on rope friction. And we wouldn't have a reliable strength profile on it. Under extreme loads, the loop could expand in size, where a ring will not.

John, absent of having a ring at the moment I ended up using an alpine butterfly loop where I would have put the ring and found it to work very well. What I really liked was the non metal to metal. Do you see any issues with this? I keep the loop very small and the alpine butterfly is super easily adjustable and doesn’t tighten down so much that you cannot work it agin after loads. I have yet to try to retrieve it out of the tree however and I could see there being a wearing issue after a time. Thanks for any insight you can offer.
@jrbtc
@jrbtc Жыл бұрын
I considered that but there's a risk that the loop wouldn't be sized or set properly and allow the carabiner to pop through. It also isn't as easy to retrieve and puts more wear on the rope. My guess is that it's a little weaker also. But if ya don't need remote retrieval, you can make the butterfly a little bigger and then when ya pass the bight thru the loop, instead of putting the Carabiner on the single strand, fold both sides of the loop back and put the carabiner so it captures both sides of the loop. That is fairly stable. We're calling that the Pocono Hitch.

Great video thanks. Just got my ring delivered today and did my first climb and rappel. Worked great. Any recommendation for what to do with carabineer when retrieving rope? I let it just dangle on it's keeper. Got hung up in a branch crotch. I got it free but made a lot of noise. Thanks
@jrbtc
@jrbtc Жыл бұрын
The retrieval line gets clipped into the carabiner as demonstrated here. Its best if the retrieval line is a little longer than ya need it to be, allowing you to walk away and pull it away rather than down. But the carabiner doesn't pass through a tree crotch; U-Pull-It right towards you and so as long as you can keep your eye on it, there shouldn't be an opportunity for it to get hung up. The rappel ring follows the carabiner, straight towards you. Just continue walking away from the tree until the whole thing Falls
@412OutdoorGuy
@412OutdoorGuy Жыл бұрын
Ok, I missed that part. Even when I used to use quick link, I pulled that thru tree instead of rope end. I use my lineman's rope while single sticking to use both hands for constantly moving tether up and trying to reduce slack at all times. Thanks for preaching safety. Definitely not a priority in some single stick videos.

John, great video. What is your thought on using a quick link instead of the rappel ring? I am wondering if the screw gate piece of a quick link would not make it as safe with carabiner against it. Also can't wait to see what else you have to show us!
@jrbtc
@jrbtc Жыл бұрын
It's a good question. I chose a Rappel ring, because (to my knowledge) these types of applications are a normal use case for them. I can't say that for a quick link. 1. The Buffalo Hitch would not be ideal for use with a quick link because of how it would orient. But you could substitute a scaffold, because there's a way to get it off. 2. To my knowledge, a quick link carabiner, presumably steel, is designed to take a tensile load from end to end. It's rugged and can absorb a reasonable amount of bending force without deformation, such as it would see in a canopy anchor application. If used in a cinch, the locking carabiner would orient with a squeezing, crushing force applied on the screw gate. Would it deform, and at what load? I don't know and so I can't recommend it. 3. Would a manufacturer of a quick link recommend this? My guess is no. 4. If you tied it and tried it, would it basically work without issues? My guess is yes. So why can't I recommend it? Because I can't take any chances with an untested configuration.
@coreydeville3670

@@jrbtc Thanks for your response. I appreciate you sharing your opinion and knowledge. The reason I asked as I already use a quick link with my single rope and I've been looking at ways to raise the tether/rappel anchor to always be on tension as I one stick up the tree. I believe I am going to try the option 2 ( running carabiner and possibly the running jrb hitch on the opposite end of the line to always be on tension and then be able to have the rappel anchor higher than the stick so I am on tension. I know from the videos you can use the JRB hitch to raise it with the pole, how does the running carabiner do with moving the rope to a higher point using a pole or would this configuration not work to advance it with a pole?
@jrbtc
@jrbtc Жыл бұрын
@@coreydeville3670 Most of my efforts in the last year have been focused on giving stick climbers a new set of tools: With no pole, the easiest Hitch to set as high over your head as possible is the Saddle Hunter's Hitch. With a pole, the Running JRB Hitch or the JRB Cinch are the only 2 I am aware of. When i stick climb, i never climb higher than my Hitch. I set it above my stick and take slack out constantly as i rise. Because the JRB Ascender Hitch will order 10 with just one hand, I keep one hand on my repel rope removing slack and the other hand around the tree for balance. I don't use alignment spell because I simply don't need one. When I get as high as I can go, I do not Advance my current hitch. I leave that there for stability while I set a new one with the other end of the Rope. Effectively, it looks a lot like my hitch climbing method except that my feet are on sticks

@@jrbtc thanks again for responding John! It’s greatly appreciated. Maybe I asked the question wrong….for climbing this year, I plan to do exactly how you said you stick climb. On my right side let’s say, I’m going to use a JRB running hitch and push it up with a pole as high as I can. I will climb my stick, hopefully do at least one move.( I’ll go as far as I can where there is no slack and I’m below the hitch). I’ll stay locked into that hitch. Then the left side of the rope I’ll do the quick link or carabiner with a continuos look so it doesn’t slide down. Use the pole to raise it up the tree while I am safely secured by the first hitch. My question is does that running carabiner option( option 2 from your video) work well with a pole to raise it up the tree? I know it locks it in place so it doesn’t slip from the weight of the carabiner but can it be moved up the tree by the pole like the jrb running hitch can?
@jrbtc
@jrbtc Жыл бұрын
@@truefutbol6 Honesty, i never tried advancing a running carabiner with a pole. My guess is that if the tree isn't real rough and ya put the fork in your pole to hold both the carabiner and the rope, ya could do so, but it would not be a quiet procedure, with the potential rattling of metal on metal. For me personally, given my confidence in tying the Running JRB, I use it on both sides of the system. If you are using a mechanical device instead of a friction hitch, you also have the option of using a jrb cinch on either side. Retrieval of the sense is a bit of effort, and also requires that there's nothing on the line or the Rope won't pass through the ring.

@jrbtc

The major problem with a scaffold knot is that it's basically impossible to get OFF the ring after we load it. Buffalo is easy enough to pop off and it offers the advantage that it lays the ring in a natural and flat position on the tree.

@jrbtc

It's a secure anchor. How you use it is up to you provided you consider the risks. If you look at the JRB Hitch Climbing playlist, link below, you see that after introducing it, i show how to set with a pole, then climb on it. If you plan to use a Garda Hitch footloop on it, it will hold of course, but you need to take into account how your bridge is connected to the rope. We should never be connected only by our feet. And we need to avoid pulling our Garda up so high that it's almost touching what's above it, the Cinch in this case. Otherwise, we can't get it off very easily.

I one stick climb and SRT climb with paracord loops, and i am very interested in using this cinch idea instead of the quick link. Would i run the tail end of the line directly through the ring and pull it up the tree to SRT climb? Attach the pull down line directly to the ring to retrieve? Very compelling system.
@jrbtc
@jrbtc Жыл бұрын
If you use paracord loops for SRT, that would imply you have a sturdy crotch in the tree that will hold your weight and you use a running delta carabiner that you set from the ground as your canopy anchor. Ok well the Cinch won't run up the line, but it can be set and advanced with a pole. There is nothing wrong with what you're using. But setting and retrieval of anchor for SRT is an unnecessary hassle. I find it easier to just climb both sides of the rope. Have you seen this? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNGig8mQmsjbcZ8.html

@@briannash9122 when you are retrieving, make sure you are using something strong and you have a carabiner or a handle on the end for a really good grip.
