A short introduction and review of the brand new Epic V9 surfski, a ski designed to slot neatly in between the entry-level V8, and the advanced V10 in Epic's range.
We sell several of the big surfski brands and like to offer balanced advice about our range, so please take this as our view on a new and innovative design.
You can see the full specs and pricing on the V9 on our website, www.expeditionkayaks.com.

I had watched this review before getting a V9 and after having paddled it for over 2 years I can truly say I love it!

I really appreciated that you compared the roominess to the V10sport and let us know it was definitely less. I find my V10 sport to be just a little too twitchy for me to be completely confident in, but I am a bigger guy, so I max out the cockpit in the V10S. I get the impression the V8 Pro is my best bet in the future.

I’m the same mate, I’m 130kg, wide in the hips and struggle to fit into skis and live very remote. I know I fit a V10sport, the nitro640 was too tight. I’ve been paddling a sipre 575 and it’s seriously twitchy… I’ve become used to it though and there’s nothing better for stability than time in the boat.

Great spiel Mark, long term V10s paddler (called it my lounge chair, son now has it) and lately Carbonology Vault. Have been wobbling in the Vault trying to push ahead in bumpy conditions, thought enough, at age 57, 176cm & 72kgs need to get stable. Tried V9 this morning - wow - I'll never fall out. Went flat out, got it to 11kmh & turned full rudder, really good. Boats turn so much better nowadays. Anyway your video clinches it (I will check Swordfish to be sure) Appreciate the comments on build quality as I've heard about things like bubbling on the newer brands. Cheers

Wonderful Review Mark - Thank you so much. I'm 190 cm (6' 3") & 105 kgs and fit into this ski very well although it is a snug fit. I struggle in my V10 and I'm one of those people who has too many numbers on my ski to paddle in the fun conditions. Love this ski. Picks up waves surprisingly well and still performs very well when you have to paddle in the river - Every bit as good as you say it is - an absolute winner...

Thank you, Mark, that was a really awsome and comprehensive review! I live in Brazil and I am a newbie in surfskis. Currently I am learning a lot and getting fitter on a V7. But as I progress in paddling I feel the V9 will be the right ski for me some months ahead. I would also very much like to know the name of the song and the singer the appears in the final seconds of this video of yours. Such a beautiful voice!

Thanks Mark. Great review. I'm a 67 year old guy who has a 2014 V10 (black nose), but I'm now finding it a bit heavy to carry around, particularly without side carry handles. I now do mostly flat water paddling and, whilst the V10 is a little faster than the V9, for me the weight saving (I'm buying an Ultra) plus the carry handles, makes this a very attractive way to keep me paddling for years to come.

It it possible to use the front handle (or small rope) to swim it past the short break. Probably most concerned about landing it, pearling and breaking it. I used to grab hobie island and swim it out/in. waves , waves usually 3-4 ft maybe.
@MarkSundin
@MarkSundin 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you could if you wanted. These skis are fast enough to break out though, and fast enough if you know what you’re doing to get in front of the impact zone on the way in.

Hey Mark. Great review mate. First time I've seen a review with the same approach to SS's as me. Its al about the waves. Ive been slugging away on a Finn PE for the last 15 yrs. Living in VIC there is very minimal opportunity to try before u buy. Your review has given me confidence that this is the right choice for me. Im 6'5 and 105kg. Love surfing even in the bigger waves (even at Bells/Winkipop at times). I have no idea how the transition from a very stable sluggish ski to the Epic ski will go. Is the Epic V9 the right choice for me or should i consider another model or brand?
@MarkSundin
@MarkSundin Жыл бұрын
You’d have to try it mate, you may not fit into the bucket for starters. I probably wouldn’t be taking a 12kg ski out in breaking beach surf either, so tend to pull the spec ski off the rack for that stuff.

Hi Mark I've been paddling a fenn swordfish for a few years now. Never 100% comfortable in big windy conditions. I had a back operation last year and now I find the Swordfish just a little too twitchy. Is the v9 appreciably more stable than the Swordfish?
@MarkSundin
@MarkSundin 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I’d say it’s definitely easier to paddle than the Swordy, a little more stable but with many of the old Swordfish S’s characteristics in moving water.

Would the V9 be a step too far for a life long sea kayak(Arctic Raider) paddler? Or would the V8 be a better buy? I'm only really interested in rough weather paddling.
@MarkSundin
@MarkSundin 9 ай бұрын
It would definitely be a large step up if you've never p[addled a ski. The V8 would be a getter choice if you want to go out in the waves straight away.

Hi mate, great video. I'm a small framed paddler. I started off with a V7 and upgraded to V10 sport and I think it was too big a jump for me. It's okay in the flat water, but feel very tippy and big on the rough water. Considering a V8 Pro or V9 and I want to know if a lighter layup would handle easier for a small framed paddler?
@MarkSundin
@MarkSundin 3 жыл бұрын
Both skis are fine for lighter paddlers, layup doesn't make a huge difference, if anything the heavier ski will sit down more in the water absorb the fizz better.

Never tried a surf ski, and wanting to ride swells out in the deep blue sea. New V5 Rotomoulded for $1,995, V7 rotomoulded for $2,095, or second hand V10 sport for $1999 with all gear?

If you've never even tried a ski, the V10 Sport would be a very demanding intro. The V7 is the best compromise.

It would just depend on your hip size. The Boost has a slightly wider bucket than the V9, you’d need to get in one to see. You’re the same size and weight as me so most likely fine.

Great that you’re out in the water in anything that floats. You’re talking about an entirely different craft there, all the best. As to sitting on the seat, I’ve done several 100km races in these craft and you’ve never sat in something as comfortable, the ergonomics favour good posture, and correct technique.

@@MarkSundin surf skis seam very similar to s.o.t. yaks. But more length and thinner and streamlined. I kinda wish I got the v17 instead of the eddyline 14. Inwas just worries about the width. The eddyline is mega stable though it has strong points, good for lesuring and fishing.

@@MarkSundin what I really want to do with a watercraft is paddle between islands. Island hopping in the Cedar Keys, Key West, Dry Tortugas, any near land Island let's say 20 miles or less. I want to craft that will efficiently do that. I road trip in winter time for three months at a time and I usually go to Florida so... the eddyline was about eighteen hundred bucks. The v17 is right around that in the states it's about 1700 on the website. I don't know if that includes the rudder or if that's an extra option. I love my eddyline but for distance it's taxing so I'm looking at what my options are and the v17 looks like the start of what I'm looking for but Man..the price of the V8 in the V10... you got to really want it. I think I'm still in denial phase.
@ArcolaBridge
@ArcolaBridge 3 жыл бұрын
Eddyline has something called a cloud 10 seat which is mandatory for distance Adventures. I can't imagine sitting on that hard plastic From miles and miles.
