Excellent! I learned so much from my grandfather, who was a soil scientist and conservation scientist with the Soil Conservation Service (back before it became the NRCS). Really looking forward to Professor Dave's deep dive into the fascinating topic of dendrochronology and adding to my knowledge of this topic.

What do a nuclear reactor and volcanic eruptions have to do with dendro? A very exciting field indeed. Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) of tree rings dates the rings based upon content absorbed worldwide from eruptions. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your series on dendro!

Prof Dave. I like to look into far out theories as a hobby. I've recently happened upon a new-ish theory that states that during the beginning of megafauna period, there were equally giant trees which were petrified due to the icy conditions post glaciation. Now people have been stating that the Devil's Tower is the 'stump' of such a tree. There are a couple of hypotheses that I want to test regarding this; a) If athroprods, during changing levels of oxygen, exhibit a maximum growth level due to inhibition regarding the structural strength of chitin - then, similarly in changing CO2 events; do cuticle containing plants have a maximum load bearing capacity with respect to the overall structure of the tree/plant? b) If these megaflora are similar to present day trees, do the petrified remains exhibit the same dendrochronology we find in modern stump patterns? c) Some claim that these petrified trees have centralized hydrocarbon complexes some of which contain amber like preservation of cells/microbiology and some small insects, if an intact cell is found, shouldn't we be able to PCR some of the endospore genetics for a clearer picture? What are your thoughts? Have you heard of this theory before?

I thought it was the science of climatology, and the history there of; and that the tree rings aren't the science, but rather the non-digital assets used to show us how trees grew, where they moved to, and how they disappeared over time.

Do tropical trees also have ring patterns that enable you to count the rings for the age of the trees? Tropical trees don't go through winter/summer cycles the same way that temperate climate trees do, due to the season being a lot less extreme in a tropical location. Are the rings of tropical trees, just not as obvious? What if you grow a tropical tree species in a temperate environment, or vice versa? Would you get a different ring pattern than the same tree species in its native environment.

Can more than one ring be generated per year?

Does dendrochronology specifically have to do with the specific tree ring technique or can it encompass the study of dating trees as a whole? For example radiocarbon dating a tree, or dating a tree without cutting it down. Or hell, even studying about how trees age?

Here's a stupid question: how did we figure out one ring represents exactly one year (= 365 days)?

everything mentioned is good and right except for time, tree rings don't represent time but events. it does't say "Oh its my birthday im gonna get a ring" When theres a dry spell it'll grow a ring when its winter it'll grow a ring when almost any event that distresses a tree occurs it'll harden to preserve itself and the water in a tree (thus creating a ring). There's a Plethora of Findings that find tree's can grow many rings a single year or none at all. its also the same for ice cores. its a bad science in general and only can validate its findings with other findings thats known to have happened and is recorded to have happened.
