This is an introduction to flying in class B airspace. This part will cover entry into a small class B (Honolulu) but talks about how to operate in class B stress free.

Transponder use on ground: “Transponder and ADS-B operations on the ground. Civil and military aircraft should operate with the transponder in the altitude reporting mode (consult the aircraft's flight manual to determine the specific transponder position to enable altitude reporting) and ADS-B Out transmissions enabled at all airports, any time the aircraft is positioned on any portion of the airport movement area. This includes all defined taxiways and runways.” AIM 4-1-20

Be prepared with your LAX BRAVO transition route when you check in. Some Bravos can clear you through arbitrarily, but we need you on a charted route through LAX 👍🐾🛩️.

Is the engine running when contacting clearance delivery when leaving or do you hold off starting the engine yet ?

Great question. I turn on the radio, listen to the ATIS, then start the engine and call clearance delivery. Clearance is usually quite quick.

I tried to call Phoenix Approach by phone like you suggest but gave up trying to get a number someone would answer. Where’s a good place to find these phone numbers?

I would start with Flight Service (FSS). Also find all the numbers starting on page 430 of the Chart Supplement (AF/D). Here is a link: aeronav.faa.gov/Upload_313-d/supplements/CS_SW_20210422.pdf If you file IFR from small airports, you actually now get your clearance directly from Center instead of through the FSS.
