Welcome to ChipNRat's Introduction to... series. This video is all about the basics of interchanges and interchange design with a focus on Cities: Skylines. We cover System vs Service Interchanges and major categorizations of interchanges such as: Cloverleaf, Partial Cloverleaf (ParClo), directional interchanges, semi-directional interchanges, stack interchanges, windmill and turbine interchanges, and some advantages and disadvantages of each style.
In this video we are using Cities: Skylines with mods, however all of the designs can be made without mods.

Finally found this, my choice of intersections gets me lots of traffic. I have trouble understanding the AI but I guess it's also a representation of people in my state and how they drive. 😁

I'm glad you found it and I'm hoping to expand on the AI behavior and how intersections can help or hurt traffic more but they are definitely not straightforward and can be really counterintuitive!

I like this video, there are far too many youtubers who make videos and take it for granted you know what they're doing and that you know what "you're" doing but that's not always the case. YUMBLtv and SkratchGamer are 2 of my favourites because they explain, like you, what they're doing. You've got a new subscriber my friend

I think maybe something that could have helped clarify even more about interchanges would be a note on the terms 'free-flowing' is and 'at-grade intersections'. Otherwise this was a surprisingly nice video to watch!

Ah yes... Me watching other people spam roundabouts: That is not the way I'm going to switchout my current interchange for a parclo/trumpet to connect 3 highways in my center hub...it'll look awesome :))))
@ChipNRat
@ChipNRat 2 жыл бұрын
While I think roundabouts are amazing, I have honestly found that they are way overused and people should let their creative side flow! There are tons of great interchanges available, however I will warn that a lot of the best ones require TM:PE just because the AI on cities is pretty bad about lane management

which ones flow the most cars? which ones get people off and on the most efficiently,
@ChipNRat
@ChipNRat 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have a good way to test flow personally, however there are other videos out there that test most of these types. As for getting on and off the best, well that really depends on how they want to get off (do they want to go left, right, straight, into a surface street, etc). I personally recommend experimenting as every city is different and cars will operate differently based on the surrounding streets. My personal most-used though are the trumpet, stack (usually 3-level but I have done 5), diverging-diamond, SPUI, partial cloverleaf, windmill. A lot of my interchanges end up being "custom design" much like in real-life just due to unique circumstances that pop up, like if you want a dedicated bus/taxi lane or something else like bypasses for trucks.

All of the interchanges at 5:15 are examples of "Partial Cloverleaf" (or "ParClo" for short) interchanges. Left interchange: "Sunken 45° B2 Parclo (Detroit, Michigan)" on Steam workshop: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1127416630 Middle interchange: "A4 Partial Cloverleaf" on Steam workshop: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1889690306 Right interchange: "Corner Cloverleaf" on Steam workshop: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=953771923

The interchange at 8:29 is known as a "Turbine" interchange (or sometimes as a windmill interchange). The one I have shown in the video at that time in particular is this one: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1917849146 (It's compact, uses Lane-mathematics, and is the turbine shown) But I also like the following variants sometimes: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1918367622 steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1917444953

Looking at all these fancy interchanges makes me sad because on uk motorways it's usually just a ramp on and ramp off
@ChipNRat
@ChipNRat 2 жыл бұрын
It is always nice to see a fancy interchange, but if the only thing needed for traffic is a simple diamond your cities are probably saving a ton of space and money on it, on the bright side!
@ShawFujikawa
@ShawFujikawa 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean by that, UK motorways make heavy use of roundabout/traffic circle interchanges in busier areas where you would need high-capacity fancy interchanges like these.
@roqsteady5290
@roqsteady5290 2 жыл бұрын
We have a lot of dumbell interchanges in UK, especially for service interchanges. That is basically two connected roundabouts at either side of the motorway each with on/off ramps for one side of the motorway. But there are so many different variants and shapes of "roundabout" with/wout lights etc etc. All you see at ground level is the particular roundabout system you are on, and usually they are directional, so it is easy not to even notice you are on an interchange at all. I use these a lot in CS, because they are very flexible, especially when the ground is not flat, as in the maps I enjoy working with.

help.. i cant build more roads. it say " i can't build anymore of this kind"
@ChipNRat
@ChipNRat 3 жыл бұрын
I've never encountered that error, but it sounds like you might be running into the road limit. Using modded roads can sometimes mess with how many segments are used for the game's tracking, and using power lines or water pipes can also use up that segment limit. I hope this helps! If not I'm not sure, but the paradox forums and steam workshop has a lot of good help on it.
