Introduction to Project Based Learning (PBL) Process

I created this video overview of PBL for the teachers at my school. We implemented a new program in the elementary school that uses this effective teaching approach.

Update #1:
I want to mention that the Kindergarten Driving Question was changed during the year. Instead we came up with, "How will you, as an engineer, create a Rube Goldberg machine?" It remains motivating and interesting, and requires core knowledge, but also easier to understand and a little more open-ended.

Here are some of the other driving questions we've asked our students:
- How can we help our school become environmentally-friendly? (Kinder)
- How will you create a nature-inspired tool that can be used during a family activity? (1st Grade)
- How can you, as IDEO Toy Lab inventors, create a toy for kindergarten students? (2nd Grade)
- How can you develop a city plan that will improve the local community? (2nd Grade)
- How can we as architects, design a schoolhouse for a specific region? (3rd Grade)
- How can you as engineers design and create an “Apple” recording device for ELLs? (4th Grade)
- How will you prepare yourself to become a NASA Martian? (5th Grade)
- How will your team of game designers create a Breakout EDU game specifically for younger students? (5th Grade)
- How will you as environmental engineers, design, build and market a product that helps the environment? (5th Grade)

This is a great introductory video on PBL. It is a great reference for parents that might be skeptical. I have been teaching for 12 years, and using PBL for 4 years now. I am happy to answer any questions that anyone might have.

Hello. I am teaching in Puerto Rico and will do this PBL thing. First, I am really concern about the training we need to master the topic. How much time did you get before implementing this at your school? For how long a project must be done in order to be successful? How teams are done in the classroom? Do each team member have a role? And if they do what are the names and the description of each role? Do we concentrate in a few core standards or try the more that we can? Thanks for your help. I already read the book Setting the Standard for PBL by John Larmer.

Great job! Although, I'm not sure that driving question can be used for kindergarten students ...

I agree. It was changed... then we took the whole unit out and did a playground model unit instead.

I actually didn't have any training when I first started pbl. I just tried it out on all my projects with the help of online resources. Obviously the first year they weren't that great. However with more practice they got better. THEN got some training at school. I recommend just trying it. That's the first step. Try one aspect of project-based learning and try to do that well. And then in the next iteration add another aspect and continue to do that.

Hi Vania, We no longer sell the workbook separately from our PBL 101 workshop, but we have other books available that have the information used in this video. (btw nice job David! And thanks for crediting us.)
