Managed to get some hands on the Sherline lathe. Boy!! What a high quality product. Even the backlashes feels good.

Looks trustfully precise and not a Chinese made crap. How much would it be in AUD Also, where can I see a display one?

What material are the tailstock, carriage and cross-slide (t-slot table) made of? Is this the same material as Proxxon uses for the PD250? Thx

Good question! I have a Proxxon PD250 and will investigate the Sherline closer. Proxxon's design concept is confusing with it's strange "sandwich design", a mixture of steel and zamak parts. The carriage is a catastrophy. The compound is useful for setting angles for thread cutting and such, but totally useless for taper turning. After a year the main lead screw is worn out on my machine. My conclusion is that Proxxons are hobby machines for soft materials. I don't consider them as precision tools, although some components and accessories are in fact quite good. If Sherline made a bigger model I would probably try it. I like the clean carriage with T slots, the tiltable head stock, so you can turn tapers without a compound. Overall it has a more modular design than the Proxxon. One important issue is weather the lead screws have axial thrust bearings. I have added that to the main lead screw on my PD250 but for the carriage lead screw it is not an option, there is simply no space for it, because the carriage is full of cavities.

You state it has all the same kind of functions as a full-size lathe, but I don't see a compound slide, so surely it lacks functions like taper cutting and threading?

It can cut tapers, the headstock rotates. They sell a compound on the website

THANKS. [ IMHO: YOU OUGHT TO PUT THE CAMERA "OVERHEAD"... NEAR WHER YOU (THE OPERATOR") WOULD BE VIEWING THINGS.]

Your oral presentation is satisfactory. Unfortunately we can't see the part being machined, or the DRO. You step in front of the camera at a few inopportune times, too.

While your video is informative my own questions all concern watchmaking operations. Does Sherline provide videos that focus exclusively on these applications?

There's no comparison between a Sherline lathe and a Chinese piece of junk. The Sherline is high-quality, reliable, accurate, and perfectly suited for small work.

I was really wanting him to tell us that as well. Or at least tell us what that diameter of that part he had put down 😏

@@montanapleaseon their website it is listed as 3.5” but there are riser blocks you can add to reach a 6” total diameter. The riser blocks cost 85$ for a set (includes headstock and tailstock riser)

You would think by now that with the exponential advancements in CNC technology, you would see it in the Sherline lathe in terms of robustness, threading capabilities, and all the capabilities you would see in large industrial machine tools as they did in the 50's and 60's. And think about watchmakers lathes. These machines were made with exceptional accuracy, design, and capabilities yet when they were made, they had no CNC machines to make them. When you look at the Sherline, it looks unfinished and far removed from robustness and capabilities. Sure, the cost would go up if it was made of cast iron, but you would think it would be offset by the high efficiency and accuracy CNC offers which saves time and labor. For Christ sake we now have robots operating CNC machines yet with all this technology the Sherline lathes have not changed very much since the 70's. Why is that? Why is it that cars and computers continue to improve in innovative ways yet the Sherline seems to be living in the past? Being a machinist myself for many years, I prefer instead to buy an old Logan lathe and restore it.

The new Sherline lathes appear to be CNC ready. If I had to guess, I’d say they intended for operations like single point threading, etc. to be accomplished with steppers working as a powered feeds.
