Using Sherline Mini Lathe to Make Bicycle Stainless Steel Bolts.

Hi Fellows!
This was how I made stainless steel bolts for an expensive bicycle.
As always, using my Sherline mini lathes, the 4410 for turning, and the 4100 to make threads.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I do!
Note, I made these two bolts from scratch using Sherline mini lathes.
Generally, the job that Sherline CNC machines do in my shop/lab are for Bicycles, Cars, Motorcycle, Watches, Firearms, Aero-model, and all my own tools and accessory etc.

Ahoy! Someone may have said this already, but that bolt is made out of aluminum so that it is the weakest point in the linkage between the shock absorber, and the frame. If there is too much stress put on that system, ideally the bolt will fail, and should leave the frame and the shock undamaged. With the stainless steel bolt, if too much stress is put on the system, it will probably crack the mounting flanges on the top tube of that bike frame. Just something you might want to pass along to your friend. ALSO your videos are fantastic! Thank you very much for sharing your process, it is deeply satisfying to watch a master like yourself work these incredible machines. I am hoping to get into machining in the future, and your demonstrations of what can be done with these Sherline machines, and the right knowledge, is incredibly encouraging.

Thanks for watching and commenting for sure. I said the same thing to my friend when he came to me. But he said he wanted stainless steel screws because the original aluminum ones would wear out prematurely. He had also changed these screws several times and was bored. I suggested that he use it carefully so as not to damage other parts of the bike. Thank you again. Luiz

Ciao amico mio, Grazie per aver guardato e commentato. Io uso il software MACH 3, molto facile da usare. In questo software ha alcuni "presets" pronti che rendono il nostro lavoro molto più facile.

Hola amigo, he visto varios de tus videos y me gusta que expliques lo que haces. Vivo en Panamá y aquí el trabajo que hacen no es tan preciso por lo que he decidido comprar un torno Sherline. Me recomiendas comprar CNC ready o con el sistema CNC incluido? He visto que has hecho varias modificaciones. No tengo mucho conocimiento sobre tornería pero sí tengo conocimiento sobre tornillos y también de Impresoras 3D. La máquina la usaré para fabricar piezas pequeñas, tornillos y tuercas para motocicletas, autos y bicicletas. Gracias.

Me tira uma dúvida, notei que durante a redução do diâmetro para 8mm você não usou em momento algum óleo lubrificante, somente quando cortou o parafuso, quando fez a rosca e quando fez o furo sextavado, Porque? (me desculpe se a pergunta for idiota .... sou iniciante)

Oi Lori, eu de certa forma falei isso indiretamente no vídeo, é o seguinte, eu estava com baixa rotação e removendo bem pouco material, isso não provoca aquecimento evitando desgaste precoce da ferramenta. Claro que com um óleo de corte sempre vai facilitar a usinagem e trazer ótimos resultados. Tem um produto da Quimatic próprio pra inox e deixa profissional o resultado. No corte o esforço é maior o esforço e é sempre recomendável a lubrificação.

Ok on this lathe you have a large pulley and normal sized belt. What specs are the motor? 4 jaw Sherline chuck is hard to find used. Is the Penn one ok?

Obrigado por assistir e comentar Gabriel, a maioria eu importei comprando diretamente da fábrica pelo cartão de crédito e pedi pra eles enviarem pela FedEx porque eles ja desembaraçam na alfândega pra gente. Já uma das fresadoras eu trouxe de lá na mala no avião e dei sorte e não fui taxado na alfândega. Vale a pena ter uma maquininha dessas em casa, tudo que sei aprendi com elas.

@@gabrielmota9432 Quando comprei eu comprei sem controladores CNC, depois importei o kit motores, drivers e acopladores, é bem mais prático e é só montar, já o software Mach3 você baixa na Internet de boa e depois compra a licença, não é muito cara, se bem que tenho visto a galera usar licença de amigos. Sei que eles lançaram uma que vêm com fusos de esferas, mesma máquina mas com aprimoramento mecânico, mais cara um pouco mas é top e vale a pena o investimento.

@@tryally Ahhh boa!! Pq vi kits já com um PC incluso, não tenho interesse. Como já uso Mach3 em outras máquinas, preferiria manter a usar Linux CNC, embora tenha experiência com Linux. Muito obrigado pelas dicas. Vou partir prum kit CNC Ready. Abc

@@gabrielmota9432 uma boa dica é ficar de olho no mercado livre e OLX sempre aparece um ou outro vendendo com preços bons, esses dias mesmo tinha uma fresadora Sherline modelo simples por r$ 3.500. Tempos atrás comprei uma que esqueci de falar a vc, estava completa com cnc e drivers, modelo 2010 8 direções métrica com mesa estendida e algumas ferramentas, por 1/4 do valor. Estava no mercado livre. Essa é a dica, fica de olho e toda semana faz uma busca que poderá achar. Veja no Facebook a página Tryally Tech e os álbuns de fotos e vc vai ver do que essas maquininhas são capazes. Abraços. Luiz Ally.

Erik, antigamente tinha representante em São Paulo, o dono faleceu e fecharam a empresa, um dos meus comprei com ele, as outras comprei direto na fábrica nos EUA pelo cartão de crédito e paguei os impostos quando chegou.

Oh ye, bycicle theme. Some entusiasts change all possible parts and fixture to titanium alloys made to reduce weight as much as possible.

- I'd only heard that bycicle frames made from berillium exist, and they`re even lighter than magnesium. It not even used in aerospace, only for sattelite parts and ultra-high tech. Also berilluim dust is toxic.
