“But You LOOK So Good” is a phrase shared with people living daily with illness, pain and disability. But what does it mean and imply? It often brings a sense of misunderstanding and disregard and even prejudice. Join an insightful, experienced panel of experts in disability support as they help us learn about the positive impact of validation, belief and acceptance in the workplace and beyond. Our panelists will provide insight and practical advice in the areas of mental health, veterans support, neurodiversity, caregiving and invisible disabilities.

Something important I learned is that people are often dismissive for different reasons, such as arrogance or avoiding the uncomfortable feelings that come with validating what we're going through. They only want happy thoughts and want to preserve their idealistic view of the world. People tend to be dismissive instead of understanding, and if our disability is invisible, that works in their favor. If it was visible, the dismissive person will be forced to accept it. I can tell that they get frustrated at my reality and the truth makes them uncomfortable. They think with their ego or emotions.
