Join InVisible InCourage Podcast host and IDA CEO, Wayne Connell as he speaks with Jack Smith, Legendary skateboarder, Guinness World Record holder and Invisible Disabilities Walk & Roll Legend, about crossing America 5-times on a skateboard and about The Push, A Skateboarding Relay Across America in June 2023. Join IDA in May 2023 at walkandroll.org
In 2018, Jack Smith completed the nation’s first cross-country road trip on an electric skateboard. The 2,394-mile journey was Jack’s fifth cross-country expedition on a skateboard, with his first taking place in 1976 on a traditional skateboard at the age of 19 from Oregon to Virginia.
Skateboarding across America has since become a vehicle to raise awareness for causes near to Smith’s heart. In 2003, Smith’s son passed away from complications due to Lowe Syndrome and in 2013, Smith’s father passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. Three of Smith’s trips across America were dedicated to raising funds and awareness for these causes.
In June of 2023, Jack Smith and his son Dylan will be the support crew as Paul Kent, Miles Kipper, Andy Andras and Rick Stubblefield will attempt to set the Fastest Known Time for a skateboarding relay across America. The push will begin on June 20th in Williamsburg, Virginia and finish in Newport, Oregon in hopefully under 15 days.
The Push team is a diverse group of elite athletes, Paul Kent from Calgary, Alberta is most known for his involvement in Long Treks on Skate Decks which includes long distance pushes throughout Peru and Morocco. Paul has also competed in international distance races. Miles Kipper resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota has competed in the IDSA 24 Hour Ultraskate and also produces LDPcast - The Distance Skateboarding Podcast. Andy Andras is a former world record for most miles pushed in a 24 hour period, 308 miles. He currently holds the 24 hour for most miles skate-poled, an event where the skater is propelled by a pole. The activity is similar to the water sport of standup paddling. Rick Stubbfield, the oldest member of the team, at 57 years young, lives in Wheat Ridge, Colorado and has competed in numerous long distance races including the Ultraskate.
The Push will benefit the ongoing work of the Invisible Disabilities Association. You can support IDA via The Push at push.giveida.org
