3 movies I bet a nickel you'd love: The Boy Friend (1971) The Apple (1980) Mind Game (2004)...big trigger warning on an early scene, fyi. Doubt any of these would perform well in the all holy algorithm. But I'm sure you'd dig them a lot, Imad. Do check em out: they're all *JOY* manifest on film.

I love the look of this movie and the sentiment of the story. It makes me cry whenever I watch it too. The doctor was not Vincent's father (Anton mentioned at their showdown that their parents were both dead). The doctor, knowing the kind of prejudice his own son faces for not being a 'perfect specimen', wanted to help Vincent attain his dream as a way of showing what anyone can do if they dream big and work hard.

I loved your reaction. Gattaca changed my life to say the least. I was told by teachers from kindergarten all the way through high school I was not going to amount to anything, i struggled with adhd, depression, anxiety and addictions. I was destined to be a felon and useless to society. But I pushed forward because of this movie. At 31 I’ve never been a felon or been arrested. I graduated high school and even got a trade school and college degree. I failed more than anyone but as long as you work hard and there are good people their is a chance for your dream

The procedure that Vincent had done on his legs is a REAL thing. If you cut the bone and create space, you can graft bone to fill in the gap. I think the body will also grow bone. It's used for people who have "uneven" legs, but it can also make you taller.

This movie is very underrated I cried like you the first time I saw it several years ago, but no one else seems to. I cried again watching you lol The main theme of the story is 'designer babies' in the future. Jerome was conceived the old fashioned way, which is why she called him a God-child. The technology around genes and DNA. Remember this was done in the 90s, so ahead of its time in a way. And the part with his legs, is an operation where they break the bones and then force them to grow back to give you longer legs.. It's extremely painful, but you can get a few inches taller. He didn't have an accident. It was intentional. You have to watch it again to see the things you missed. You're a funny guy. Enjoyed that.

Fine reaction, and my first of yours. I particularly like your editing choices, and overall presentation. Thanks for not cutting it too short, as so many do on KZfaq. I seldom bother with selections that are under 35 minutes. After intro and outro there isn’t enough left. So far as other Jude Law, you might try Cold Mountain, set during the American Civil War. Very few reactions to it are available. It’s a solid performance, and the story is moving.

If Shakespeare had lived in the world of Gattaca, would he have had a chance to accomplish all that he achieved in his own time? The 2023 article "Shakespeare Was a Woman and Other Heresies review - in search of the bard" asks: - How did a glover’s son from the sticks, with no more than a grammar school education, acquire such intimate knowledge of court manners and politics, European languages, legal process and Italian geography?

Fun little note. At the scene of 18:14 Vincent explains the planet titan and it’s “clouds”. The song playing in the background is django reinhardt’s “nauges” which I believe is clouds in French

Many cute details throughout: Their staircase is a helix. The letters in Gattaca are the codons in our DNA. "In-Valid" is the word "invalid." Vincent's last name is "Freeman." Jerome's medal turns to gold in the fire. Anyone notice other symbolic Easter eggs?

It's been so long you forgot you left your comment, but...better late than never here are some easter eggs / symbolism / motifs / trivia: 1. The film was voted the most accurate sci-fi film ever made by the scientists at NASA. 2. The name of Thurman's character in the film is Irene Cassini, which is the surname of the 17th century Italian astronomer who discovered the prominent gap in Saturn's main rings, among other discoveries. 3. The icons used to denote a Valid versus an In-Valid have significant meaning. On the scanners, an infinity symbol appears next a Valid's name, denoting their 'infinite potential.' Next to an In-Valid's name, a dagger appears. In taxonomy, a dagger next to a taxon indicates extinction. In addition, the dagger symbol resembles a cross, a reference to In-Valids being referred to as "God Children".

Here's a piece of trivia for you (not sure if this happened in "Wilde", I haven't seen it). Oscar Wilde was friends in real life with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes novels. They first met at a luncheon to discuss book deals with an American publisher who wanted to speak with them both.

41:42 You said, "This is a tale of two brothers fighting. But, fighting for what exactly?" You put your finger on the crux of the theme of the movie. Vying ideologies. We are probably less than 30 years away from the genetic manipulation shown in the film. EDIT: If you're interested, look into how CRISPR-CAS9 is used to modify genes right now. How will society treat people who have, or have not, been engineered to have fewer flaws? Anton (the younger genetically "superior" brother) believes that the science is always correct. Anton is close to perfect genetically, and his "God-Child" brother is flawed, and shouldn't be allowed to succeed, because that conflicts with society's narrative, and his personal ideology. Vincent believes that science is not perfect, and that determination and dreams can overcome almost any obstacle, even his imperfect genes...or, as the line delivered by Vincent in the movie goes -- "There is no gene for the human spirit."
