I love Claudia + Madeline, too. A lot of people make a big fuss about Claudia being 14, but since she's actually middle aged and a couple decades older than Madeline, I think of her as a dwarf who was lucky enough to have finally found somebody who chooses her first for a change.

The vampires use companion as a term for the person they're deciding to spend their life with mainly because it isn't always a romantic relationship. Companions can also be platonic in Anne Rice's world... It isn't quite the same thing as a soulmate because a vampire can have many companions throughout their entire life... It's basically just the current person you're deciding to spend your nights with... As is briefly mentioned in the show, Louis and Claudia were companions in thir travels until she met Madeline. Louis just does also happen to have a romantic/sexual relationship with Armand and Lestat who were both his companions. But yeah I think Anne chose the word companion because it is a slightly more old-fashioned word to use and since you know the whole story is about vampires that live a very very very long time companion it makes sense as a word choice. 🤷‍♀️ The vampires in the show often do use more old fashioned language and word choices in the show... As you said, the show is teaching you a lot of new English words that aren't used in daily conversation in modern-day. There are even a couple of words that I had to look up so it's even teaching native English speakers some new words that are technically old words that just aren't really used anymore.

In Ann Rice's Chronicles "a companion" for a vampire is not a lover - it is someone to share eternity with. In those terms Louis and Claudia were companions. It is more important to a vampire.

Whenever Louis shows a bit more 'aggression' it immediately reminds me of him in his human form. I've never gotten the impression that Louis dominating a situation, person, etc. was untrue or a put on in any way. It's just one part of who he is.

17:53 I mean I think the show has really improved upon Claudia and Madeline's relationship. In the book and movie they were very much mother and daughter. In the book and movie Madeline had lost her daughter recently and Claudia was looking for a mother figure and so that type of relationship kind of worked... But I think a romantic relationship makes a LOT of sense for the shows' Claudia... Because in season 1 they were VERY clear that Claudia is desperately wanting a romantic relationship with another vampire... "Whos my Lestat? Whos my Louis?" Who will love me like you two love each other, essentially. And so the show followed through with that plot thread... And gave her a romantic partner who chooses HER over everybody else... Which is just something that Claudia has NEVER had in her human life or in her vampiric life. People are constantly and consistently choosing other people over her and then she met somebody who is willing to choose her... even if it means that they are both going to die moments later. In my opinion the depth of that relationship hits significantly harder emotionally than what's in the source material. I mean sure they probably could have kept Claudia and Madeline's relationship platonic... They didn't really actually show them being romantic in the show. And potentially that might have hit just as hard. But I think the romantic layer to the relationship just adds MORE depth and nuance. And I think people can just relate to it more. Sure, some people would die for their friends or a family member... But there are a LOT of people on earth who would die for their significant other.
