The iPhone 11 Pro Max camera (in Midnight Green) goes up against my professional camera Sony a6300 in this video. The price of the two are about the same, but this is definitely not a scientific, 1 to 1 comparison between the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the Sony a6300 by any means. I take photos in RAW on my Sony, which means all the color information has to be brought out in editing. On the iPhone 11 Pro Max, it's not like that. Much of the editing is done immediately after taking the photo by the camera software. So, I've edited the photos from the Sony as I usually do, and did very basic editing to the photos from the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Hope you all enjoy!

Yeah, that seems to be the debate of the last decade. The convenience of having a camera on your phone but suffering loss of quality (sometimes significant). Versus having a dedicated dslr or mirrorless camera and trading the conference of it being pocket size & connected to the internet

@@joshbonner9409 tye? lmao the Sony images look much more natural and over all pleasing to the eye iPhone look exactly like a phone does over processed and over sharpened no color depth and no depth dimensions not to mention the raw files on a phone are hot garbage that just shows you how much computation is going on with phones. Sonys image out put is also mediocre nikon and fuji film have the best image out put i stoped bracketing images since the dynamic range on nikon cameras is so good all you have to do is expose for the highlights and bump the shadows in lr you have to shoot raw of course but that is the point of buying a camera like this.

Nice to see a review in which they're not saying the iPhone is a Dslr/mirrorless killer which it is obviously not, it's a great camera to have in your pocket but in my testing the images come no where near close to my A7riii, great review!

Liked the video and the comparison. Does the iPhone shoot RAW? I think that might have helped even things out if both were edited in Lightroom as RAW images. Even so, I think the Sony would have pulled ahead. Thanks again. Cheers! - Brett

Thanks for the comment! My understanding is that it can shoot raw, but only in the lightroom mobile app. And the raw files cannot be transferred to a computer. Or at least I couldn't figure out how to do it. But yes I agree, I think editing the raw iPhone photos would yield better results. I may make a video about that in the future!
@Youmemba
@Youmemba 3 жыл бұрын
Raw files on the iPhone or any phone suck anything over iso 400 and you already start to see color and luminance noise and it gets worse if you want to pull shadows. the magic happens computationally with phones they rely heavily and fancy image processing the raw files show you its true quality. Its best to just leave any phone in auto unless you have ideal lighting situations. I can't even imagine what a real camera could do with the same processing power.

Great video. The fact that a smartphone's camera is being compared to a professional camera is already mind blowing. And also the fact that the phone takes better pics than the camera at times is just insane to me. Who would've thought..

The iPhone camera lenses’ specs (e.g., 13mm for ultra wide angle) are equivalent to 35mm. The ultra wide is not actually 13mm.

To be honest I thought about it. I probably could have made the iPhone photos look a lot closer to the Sony, but in my opinion that would have been cheating a little bit, and not very realistic. I don't think many (or any) people spend a huge amount of time editing their iPhone photos the same way people with dslr or mirrorless cameras do

Josh Bonner - If he put similar effort into editing the iPhone photos, they would’ve come out better. The Sony would still be ‘better’ but the differences would’ve not been as apparent when viewed as a social media post.

Josh Bonner - It could be made to appear closer with not much effort. An awkward comparison, but an interesting one. The fact that folks are comparing dedicated cameras to multi-use devices that have cameras tells of how far technology has come. Interchangeable lens cameras will absolutely reign supreme in professional applications for the foreseeable future, but pros are already slipping video footage into projects from phone cameras as b-roll today. Exciting times!

Great video. The iPhone took some pretty impressive images but the Sony won. The Sony killed the phone in low light as I would expect. The iPhone sensors will have less dynamic range so it must be internal bracketing or underexposing and then processing the image to bring it back. You can get similar results with Sony by shooting in jpeg and turning up the d-range optimiser. Though in the real world I would shoot raw and bracket as you did.
@MiketheMathMan
@MiketheMathMan 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Scott! I agree, the iPhone is pretty good for what it is, but there isn't much of a comparison between the two cameras. And yeah I was actually kind of surprised at how poorly the iPhone performed in low light. I guess the Night Mode option is only available for one of the lenses, not all three. Thanks for the comment!👊
@BuddyMoran
@BuddyMoran 4 жыл бұрын
Scott, of course the Sony came out better. It was post processed. The iPhone should have used a camera app that can produce a raw image and post processed, too. Or the Sony set to shoot jpg and adjust its camera settings. Otherwise this is comparing apples and oranges.

Scott Williams Photography Yes the computation photography on the iPhone is pretty impressive and I compare it to my a6400. Without d range the iPhone win hard on dynamic range and with d range they are almost on par but the results on the Sony are way to unrealistic (like pushing everything on the mid tone). Never thought that smartphones would be so good and it’s actually very good camera to have always with you. If I want the best I can shot raw with my a6400 but camera companies should improve they jpeg and learn from smartphones because those jpeg from iPhone are like the best you would get even if you shot raw when in real camera there is a big difference from raw to jpeg

Light Yagami The reason many people (and most advanced photographers) get interchangeable lens cameras (ILC - i.e., both DSLRs and mirrorless) is for more control to complete control when taking photographs. Computational photography allows very little of this. Some people prefer to let the camera do most of the work, some prefer to do the work according to their own preferences of how they want the photo to look. Which one is better, both camera and resulting photo, is really up to the individual tastes and objectives. There’s no definite right or wrong, no better or worse. To each his/her own.

lets say you brought a canon eos M100 and a Nikon D 5000 instead. D 5000 is 12 mp and M100 is double of that . Difference would be huge and both can make really good photos and both are very cheap. And then you could add another camera like canon 350 D that cost nothing. And sony A3000 that I bought for 80 dollars. And then an old samsung s7. And a Fuji HS10 bridgecamera that I bought for 30 dollars. And showing the pictures on youtube like you do tell almost nothing about the image quality cos unless you pixelpeep and print large there is no way you can tell what is really going on. I made thousands of great photos with the fuji HS10 but its just as bad (or good)as the samsung s7. When you pixelpeep you find the picture is mushy and not nice. So the first thing you have to determine when you want to shoot a picture is if you want it to be beautiful when you look close or if you just dont want to see how mushy it is. You can fool anyone with a mushy picture when you dont zoom in. The fuji HS10 has a very nice lense, just like the samsung EX1 has and because of the beautiful lense the picture will have some or a lot of beauty. But if you zoom in....So what are you trying to achieve? A beautiful picture that that really is low quality if you examine it? Or do you want a picture that is great in every way?

This isn’t a realistic comparison. To do a realistic comparison, either shoot the Sony in JPG or use a third party camera app that can produces a raw photo (e.g., the Lightroom iPhone app) and post process that, too. Otherwise, of course the post processed image will look nicer. And for nightmode, use an iPhone tripod.
@MiketheMathMan
@MiketheMathMan 4 жыл бұрын
I think the Lightroom app still needs a bit of updating for the iPhone 11 pro cameras. I couldn't seem to access the ultra wide camera while inside of it; also when shooting raw, the HDR capabilities of the 26mm lens seemed to be lost inside of LR mobile. I could have missed it, but I did spend a few minutes shooting raw at first only to find myself disappointed. And you're absolutely right - this video is definitely not an apples to apples comparison. That said, I did try to mimic real world use as much as possible. Editing the Sony raw files on the computer, and doing a few minor edits on the iPhone photos (something along the lines of what a simple editing app would do). I appreciate the comment 👍
