Special Thanks to IQAir for sending me the Air Visual Pro unit for review. I'd like to think I'm objective but still wanted to let you guys know where the device came from.
SHAMELESS PLUG: If you're interested in picking up a Air Visual Pro as an addition to your smart home, please consider using my affiliates link
IQAir Air Visual Pro geni.us/HKGIQAirVisualPro
Note: These are affiliate links.
The AirVisual Pro is an Air Quality device that always comes up high in searches around consumer grade AQI Sensors and one of the only Air Quality Sensors in the consumer space ( at least that I"ve seen ) that comes from a company who actually makes air purifiers as well. It's clear that IQAir as a company is dedicated to helping us understand the quality of our air, both indoor and outdoor, as well as helping us do something about it.
The Air Visual Pro is a battery operated, wifi enabled AQI meter with multiple sensors including
- Temperature
- Relative Humidity
- Co2 ( Carbon Dioxide )
- PM2.5
The large 5" display is bright enough to see from across the room and the color coding of the air events makes it easy to get a sense of how things are going in the monitored space without having to grab your phone out of your pocket. This is an ideal device for the kitchen to remind you to open the window or turn on the stove fan when you're cooking starts to pollute the air a bit.
The other notable feature of the IQAir system is the community that they are trying to build around Air Quality in general. In addition to the Air Visual Pro and the various Air Purifiers that offered, they also have an API to help developers and scientist get access to Air Quality data from all over the world. Oh... and there's a community edition (free!) that allows us amateur air quality geeks to play around with the data and create something new that's meaningful to our lives.
Like most things in life, the AirVisual Pro isn't perfect. I'd love to have seen the addition of a VoC sensor in this device. As well, I'd love to see the addition of Alexa, GoogleHome, and AppleHomekit integrations into the ecosystem to be able to connect the AirVisual Pro into my smarthome and use the sensor data to trigger actions like turning fans, heaters, or air purifiers on.

Hey @simon Yup. Depending on where you live in the world, Pm2.5 may be one of your bigger problems and tracking that in the house is definitely going to be one of those things you want to watch. Although I definitely get that having some smarthome integration would be a welcome addition to this device, sometimes it’s good to have a device just focus on doing one thing well. The more I think about the greater vision that IQAir has about providing air quality data to the world, the more I start to appreciate the whole go-to-market strategy. Not sure I covered it enough in the video, but I love the fact that people are able to “donate” their data and become a public tracking location. More people on board, more datasets to pull from. As air quality becomes more of a global issue, having that distributed data set is going to be really important in making sure we can make good decisions that avoid data bias. Dreaming of the future... :)

Why does mine work so terribly regarding particle counts?? I can literally place it on top of the dog beds where there is visible dust accumulation, dog comes and lay there (Great Dane and Doberman in same place who wrestle in the DIRT covered back yard) and even though I place it on continuous monitor from the advanced menu, it still says ZERO particles!!! I literally have to blast AC air into the hole of it for it to start registering any kind of higher particle counts. So if you want to measure particles to prove to your husband we need more filters and that we need to fix the terrible backyard made of dirt (replace with fake grass or SOMETHING) then this device will only prove there is NO problem at all when the accumulation of dirt and dust in a matter of 2 days after dusting and then you see pure brown dirt particles on your rag, then maybe buy this unit to prove there is no dirt or dust problem in your home (ignorance is bliss, right?)! This device only works to measure CO2 and maybe temp but NOT particles at all (which was why I spent 300 wasted dollars on it to begin with!!! 🤦🏻)!

Does this AirVisual Pro create a past history of the Air Quality in one's home? For example, if I were to run this AirVisual Pro for a month would I be able to hone in on any given day and see what the Air Quality reported for that day was? Past historical data would be super helpful to pinpoint issues in one's home or even understand the implications of one's actions (e.g., cooking sausage without overhead fan exhaust, dry wall repairs to home, painting, etc.) on their indoor air quality.

Hey Robsta! Great move on getting the airpurifier. To be honest, the air is probably overall better with the purifier, but it's going to be going back and forth as various things happen in your home. If you're cooking for instance and frying something, the PM2.5 in the house will go up regardless of whether or not you have a purifier. The main use for this in my home is setting on the counter and helping to remind me to turn on the over range hood fan and maybe open the window while I'm cooking. Air is a tricky thing and anything you can do to be more aware and to correct it is a good thing in my books. :)

Thanks for reviewing, Chris! Can i keel it indoor and take it outside for a single measurement per day (outdoor) then share just that single outdoor measurement to (with) the public? Because I'm mainly interested in buying it to support the local community (rather than just doing indoor measures & pulling outdoor data/download). It doesn't look waterproof so Id certainly have to keep it indoor most of the time (instead of outdoor = more important for the community / who would need my indoor measures, lol) and just manually take it outside whenever I can. So, if possible - please explain that part to me (focus on outdoor measures and uploading to public/community, having in mind that it does mostly indoor measures. Do i have ability to mark reading as outdoor? Do i have ability to upload just outdoor readings to the public? Etc.) 🇹‌🇾‌
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Marko! Great question. To the best of my knowledge there’s no way to mark the measurements as indoor or outdoor so there’s no way to selectively share only the outdoor measurements. You might reach out to the IQAir community to see if there’s any one who’s figured out a decent way to switch between indoor and outdoor mode with minimal effort. I had similar aspirations but found switching back and forth was just too painful.

I think a Particulate count would be great too on top of VOC
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 5 жыл бұрын
Hey @maakjar. The AirVisual actually includes the PM2.5 count as well as correlates that to the US Air quality index values. I agree that Tracking particulate matter is super important! Thankfully the AirVisual has you covered.

Can this be connected to a 5G network? I bought another product and when trying to pair I was told I can not as it does not support that tecnology.
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 4 жыл бұрын
Assuming you’re talking 5Ghz wifi the answer is “Nope”. The AirVisual is listed as only supporting 2.4Ghz wifi (802.11 B/G/N) on their website. Almost all wifi gear now has both 2.4 and 5 radios. I’ve had issues with some devices that required me to temporarily disable the 5Ghz radios to connect the device which may help in your case. Hope this helps!

Ideally this would come with a satellite unit you could place outdoors so you could get both indoor and outdoor data.

No disagreement here. The only device I’m aware of like that is the netatmo weather station which has add Ons for things like rain fall measurement etc…
@robothebobo

@@Homekitgeek I guess the other solution is a dedicated outdoor station like a PurpleAir, registered separately. This device would get the data from that as the closest published outdoor sensor. Doubles the cost tho.

can this device be connected to iq air health pro which i purchsed it 5 years ago?
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Louisa! thanks for the question! I took a look at the IQAir website for the Health Pro and it doesn't look like there is any smart's in the Health Pro so the answer to your questions is "No". That being said, the AirVisual could be put in the same room as the Health Pro to give you an idea of how the Health Pro is actually doing. I have a few different models of AQI sensors in different rooms in my house and I can tell you that watching them trend down over time does help me to understand when I might want to consider changing the filters in my purifiers.

I wonder why it doesn't detect SO2, CO, and O3. I was hoping I could use this in my car to measure the gases as I drive through dense city traffic. I want to know how efficiently the IQair Atem is able to work in my car.
@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 4 жыл бұрын
My guess is the cost of the sensors to be honest. TBH i haven’t found a good combo air purifier with sensor device that reports realistically. It’s better than nothing, but the air around the purifier is (obviously) purifier so it doesn’t seem to reflect the same reading as a stand-alone sensor across the room. I also haven’t found a portable w/ screen sensor that’s mobile that covers all of these pollutants. The HUMAi is not bad but I’d love to see something like the uHoo AQI sensor in a portable unit.

@Homekitgeek
@Homekitgeek 5 жыл бұрын
It’s definitely up there. For bedrooms ie. the space where we spend 8+/- hours a night breathing, I’d definitely require a VoC sensor in any device I put in there. But for kitchen’s or living rooms, I’m willing to take the lack of VoC sensor in exchange for large display and the battery to be able to move it around. From the healthy studies I’ve had a look at, PM2.5 is also a critical piece.
