EPISODE 4
In this riding video of motorcycle adventure travel around the world we just arrive at the Turkish border with Iraq and cross it in the evening near the city of Zakho. During the Iraqi customs process I get warm welcomes from all directions and a British Kurd invites me to his house in Duhok for the night.
The ride starts in northern Iraq and progresses south east in Iraqi Kurdistan. An Iraq adventure motorcycle tour! Starting out in Zakho and going through cities like Duhok, passing Mosul, Akre, Erbil, Sulaimani (Sulaymanihah), Halabjah, Dokan and Amedi. Over and along desert regions where the road to the Iraqi capital is luring and the mountainous border with Iran. At one point I am only 150km from Baghdad and I'm tempted but reports have been conflicting. I'll stand out like a sore thump. Did not go and it ended up being a wise choice. A few days later while drinking with two guys from Baghdad they showed me a recent video of ISIS death squads shooting up innocent people on the highways. This was before ISIS was international headlines. Though soon they would be and I left the country a few days later. Two weeks later ISIS captured Mosul. There is immense beauty in Iraq and one day I would like to do a trip around the whole country. Enjoy this short adventure motorcycle documentary of Iraq. Put together with the bits that I recorded back in 2014.

My name is Pedro Mota and back in 2014 I left the Netherlands on a beautiful Honda Transalp XL600v dualsport motorbike on a trip to the east end of Russia in Vladivostok. On the way there I would take a big detour through the Middle East, Central Asia and Mongolia. Little did I know back then that this would evolve into a years long motorcycle travel further taking me through Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the American continent.

Watching this episode brought back many memories. I spent a couple of years in Kurdish Iraq. I loved the people and the beauty of the region is amazing. Swam in Lake Duran, just like you and shed some tears in Halabja. I can’t wait to go back as a civilian and see the changes. Unfortunately, some of my old stumping grounds, Mosul and Kirkuk are still way too dangerous.

Thanx for the impressions at the desktop! Fine video, here in foggy Germany! @Mrdude: A journey like that won't happen by chance or in the pub in the evening. E.g. I plan it now, to realize it in a 3 months journey in the middle east. I grab informations, make a schedule for visa, papers etc. Looking here is a kind kind of pre joy, to sit one day on my own bike on Pedros tours and I will habe a big grin in my face! Thanx, Pedro!! Kind regards, Henry ;-))

I'm thinking about flying into Frankfurt, from there heading east. Czechia / Austria / Hungary / Romania / Bulgaria / Greece - fairy to Italy / then north to Switzerland and back out of Frankfurt. As far as time, I'll be out of a job, so it's an open schedule. The issue I need to work out is picking / narrowing down cities I want to visit. I don't want to blow through a country, but also don't want to stay in one spot for a month (until I do) either. I have a lot of logistics to work out, IE, buying a bike in Europe / registering as an American. As far as maintenance, I've done minor electrical work on my old bike and oil changes. I'd be curious what sort of maintenance you'd suggest learning before heading on the road. I also see a good number of videos where people take tires, is that just because it's so hard to find in the middle of nowhere. Or (very dumb question) is there a hack / trick when on the road how to replace a busted tire - I'd assumed it needed a shop. The one obstacle as far as time / trip length, I have a dog that my parents will watch for months - but not years. If not for him I could very easily see being gone for years. I have nothing holding me here and have always had a serious case of wanderlust.

@iPedroMota 6 жыл бұрын
Depends on country and type of visa. Russia I had 3 months to activate visa after receiving it, others have 6/12 months validity. Turkmenistan has been the craziest visa so far: first I needed Iranian and Uzbek visa before I could apply and you only get a 5 day transit visa, with fixed dates if I remember correctly (maybe not) and fixed point of entry and exit.You're right, shit happens and then things can get really complicated but especially expensive. Btw, Iraq visa was the greatest one I've ever gotten and the border crossing was the most fun. Arranged it at the border, written on a piece of paper and it was indefinite by the looks of it. Happy to have a guest over it seemed.

@iPedroMota
@iPedroMota 6 жыл бұрын
It's an autonomous province within Iraq called Iraqi Kurdistan. Pretty crazy history and lot of fighting in the past. They govern themselves within the country but are a part of Iraq. They were getting close to trying to gain independence from Iraq in 2014 but then ISIS came. I think they will try again because the Kurds really want their own country but the countries around them don't want that, especially Turkey. Complicated stuff.
