UK amzn.to/36nzmJR
✨ Ingredients ✨
150ml freshly brewed coffee
30ml Irish whiskey (I used Tullamore Dew)
15ml Simple Syrup
Fresh Irish Cream
Grated Nutmeg (I used ground nutmeg powder)
✨ Method ✨
Add whiSkey and coffee to a toddy glass
Add simple syrup
Add whipped cream and grated nutmeg to garnish
Enjoy!
History of the Irish Coffee:
The Irish Coffee was created in the 1940's by Joe Sheridan, who was a chef at Foynes Port near Limerick, Ireland. On one night of particularly bag weather, a whole fleet of passengers had to be diverted back to the airbase. Joe decided to whip up an Irish coffee for the weary passengers.
The story goes the name came about because one of the passengers asked "is this Brazilian coffee?" to which Joe replied "No, "that's Irish Coffee." and thus the Irish Coffee was born!
Please enjoy your alcohol responsibly! www.drinkaware.ie/

Pro tip from a chef: To whip cream, chill everything. The cream, the bowl, even the whip. EVERYTHING. Do that, and the cream whips faster.

Though the cold makes it easier to stiffen the cream, it really isn’t necessary.

According to the Bon Appétit: “But in the case of whipped cream, it's preferable to start with chilled dairy because the fat globules emulsify faster and stay emulsified longer when cold. For an even more efficient whipping, start with a cold mixing bowl and cold electric mixing attachment, says digital food editor Dawn Perry. Just pop them in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before starting.”

@@raulpena355 Cold cream and a cold bowl will make the process faster but the critical factor is a squeaky clean bowl with no, none, zero, nada soap residue on it. The surfactants in either dish soap or dishwasher detergent will prevent the milk fat from emulsifying and whipping into a cream. You'll whip until your arm falls off and all you'll be left with is some liquid cream with bubbles in it.

When I make my Irish coffee I whip the cream until it is just slightly thickened and slowly pour it over until the mug of coffee looks like a freshly drawn Guinness. Also I never considered using Tullamore D.E.W. I enjoy sipping Tullamore and never thought of mixing it. I use Bushmills in my Irish coffee or if I wish a Kentucky coffee I will use Knob Creek bourbon.

The whipped cream shouldn't be anything like the aerated stuff out of a can. Pour it over the back of a spoon if you want to keep the layers separate, which I recommend, That way each sip of coffee pulls along a bit of the cream layer!

A world traveling colleague of mine proclaimed the "traditional" Dublin Irish coffee that it was of course real cream floated atop the mixture of coffee, whiskey and two sugar cubes. My ex- liked Jameson's while I like Bushmills. I have used confectioners sugar as sweetener as it dissolves readily.

I use a good spoonful of brown sugar instead of the simple syrup. For the cream I usually just take the bottle and shake it like crazy for a bit. That thickens it enough where it will float without having to be a full fluffy whipped cream. I have only ever used Jameson for the whiskey.

I concur with the Brown Sugar, or use a Demerara Sugar cube and let it dissolve with the hot coffee. Also, Jameson's Cold Brew Irish Whiskey is fantastic with it.

If you use freshly whipped cream then you should put a clean spoon bottom side up and close to the coffee. Then add the cream slowly onto the other spoon and let it slide onto the top of the coffee.

The last time I made Irish coffee, I took it out of the box, pealed off the foil lid and nuked it in the microwave for 45 seconds. 2 for £5 in Lidl. I only bought them because a) they were cheap, and b) they came in some funky little glasses, so even if they were nauseating, at least we got funky glasses out of it. The fact that we ended up with a dozen of those bloody glasses by Christmas is testament to how good they were (and had no right to be). Plus they're the ideal vessel for hot toddies and quick mulled wine. (fill one with wine (100ml-ish), add honey and ginger, nuke for 45 seconds, stir, add a clove, a dash of cinnamon and a curl of orange peal)

This was my first cocktail and it was delicious! 😋 Btw, you can put the heavy cream in a squeeze bottle and simply shake it. You'll know the heavy cream is firm enough when it can retain a dot on your finger. Afterwards, gently squeeze the heavy cream on top of your irish coffee and it should stay on top of the drink. This is a lot easier than mixing it with a whisk. I also like to preheat my glass with hot water as well before i get started with the drink. Amazing video as always Ciara! Cheers! 🥃☕🥂

One thing I’ve found to be important to me in making these is to add the whiskey last, as the coffee is otherwise hot enough to cause some of the alcohol to evaporate, if directly added to the spirit. I first pour the coffee, then add the sugar (heat aids in dissolving it), then the cream, and then I carefully pour the whiskey in. By that time, the coffee has cooled down just a little bit. It also has a nice side effect of flavouring the cream with the whiskey. My preferred whiskey for this is the Fighting 69th, which is my connection to Ireland.

Yum, I want one now! Whipped cream tip - it's quite easy to make if you put your cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract in a mason jar. Seal the jar up and shake away. It goes much quicker that way and gives a nice little work out! Tip: check the consistency periodically as it's quite easy to accidentally make butter ;)

My very first Irish Coffee was in Tom Ham's Lighthouse on Harbor Island in San Diego in 1980. The atmosphere was wonderful, looking out into the harbor with one...two...okay, more of the great cocktails warming the soul. Even bought the stemmed mug with their logo on it, although that has long disappeared. At that time, it was their signature drink. I also find that cognac does wonderful with coffee as well. It is great timing for this drink and video as the incoming winter weather invites such libations. Cheers.

I am not an expert, these are just my thoughts and experiences with making a lot of Irish coffees for me and my friends. I think you were very nearly done with the whipped cream, it just needs to lightly whipped. Canned cream is ok in an emergency but it is usually sweetened and I find the result is better with the real deal. The canned variant also wont integrate in the drink in the same way, when you get the perfect whipped cold cream on top and take a sip with both hot and cold at the same time - it's magic! I usually use brown sugar instead of syrup and on top of the cream I put some type of garnish, often a few sprinkles of raw crystallized cane sugar, or cocoa, maybe some chocolate through a cheese grater. The taste will obviosly also be altered a lot by the type of whisky, bourbon is nice. Haven't tried nutmeg myself, I will do that next time! Cheers!

At The Buena Vista they use two sugar cubes of white cane sugar. The sugar is used to sweeten the drink and also to change the viscosity of it so that the cream can float better. They do not add any garnish on top.

I use fresh brewed coffee, Bushmills Black, a little "Irish Mist" and a little sugar. In the fresh whipped heavy cream a little Creme de Cocoa. I had an Irish roommate in college who taught me how to make his version. Pretty similar to yours except that he used brown sugar instead of simple syrup. And instead of whipped cream he used heavy cream layered on top of the drink by pouring it over the back of a spoon. I modify it myself by stirring a bit of Bailey’s in the cream before layering.

Hey Ciara, I'm a Canadian who went to visit Ireland several years ago to visit my "homeland" and fell in love with it! I went on a bus tour all around the country and one of our stops was the tour guides favorite pub who the owner made the best Irish coffee in his opinion. Apparently her secret was aging the whipping cream. She would whip it the day before and then serve it the next day. It really was divine! And an electric blender makes whipping cream much easier! 😊 Love from Canada!🥰

When I make them I use demerara syrup for a bit more flavour. I also use a hario v60 to make the coffee directly into the glass with the whiskey and syrup already in there. I've also made the frozen irish coffee to the recipe from the Erin Rose Bar in New Orleans which involves cold coffee, vanilla ice cream and a blender. Weirdly they use cognac rather than irish whiskey but it was amazing.

Love your videos! I skip the simple syrup, and use coffee, Bushmill's and fresh whipped cream for my Irish coffee. If you add a teaspoon and a half of granulated sugar to the cream before whipping, it goes much easier. And the cream and sugar sweeten the drink. Some folks add Bailey's to the mix, but I find that too sweet.

I was raised in Alaska. My father used to take me out for long hunting trips on the river. He made riverboats. Hunting season starts in September, which is the month snow starts in the interior (typically). In the morning he would put a shot of whiskey in his coffee and call it "Irish Coffee". Should note that he took sugar and cream in his coffee, so not to far off from your concoction, sans nutmeg. But he also called Baileys in coffee "Irish coffee". He wasn't too particular about the recipe. I think he was more about getting something to warmup his insides in the chilly mornings. In those days the whiskey was always Jack Daniels. In his latter, retirement years he bought some land from my grandfather on the old farm in North Florida and started using Crown Royal for his Irish Coffee. So maybe Irish Coffee is just an excuse to start whiskey early in the morning. Ha.

I just saw someone make this on another channel, I forgot who, but he actually whipped his cream in two shaker tins. Never done it but I can see it. Lovely as always, really enjoy this channel as I am new-ish to cocktails👍😃🍻

First of all, yay for the Tullamore Dew shout out. That's my go-to Irish whiskey. Secondly, Irish coffee is delicious! It's one of my favorite winter drinks. Instead of simple syrup, I put a Tablespoon or two of brown sugar in mine. It helps balance out the flavors and adds a really nice toffee/caramel-like note to the drink. I hadn't put whipped cream or nutmeg on it before, but it looks lovely and I'll definitely try it next time. Cheers from San Diego, CA!

Have to chuckle when you say the "fan of a drop of whiskey", haven't tried a true Irish Coffee but looks like a winner. Wow what kind of coffee maker you have there lady that's loud? Only time we every had anything close was in the winter fishing or hunting with the evening meal a tin cup of hot coffee with a shot of Wild Turkey whiskey. :)

Always go for the fresh grated nutmeg. It is roughly a million times better than pre-ground. Love the content. Keep up the good work.

My first hot cocktail ever. Loved this one, especially living in Europe and finally experiencing winter. Instead of hand whipping the cream, a blender ball in the shaker will get the job done! 👍

I live in SF. Buena Vista Cafe uses sugar cubes, so do all the bars I have been to in SF. Irish coffee is a great drink to have Christmas morning.

I have not made Irish Coffee in at least 20 years and you make me want to do one right now! I will wait a bit since I don't have whipping cream... The difference with the way I do it is that I use Bailey's instead of simple syrup and I coat the rim of the glass with sugar.

Two refinements: 1. Use a lightly whipped cream. It should float on the top and not really make peaks. 2. Fresh nutmeg tastes wildly different from the stuff in a bottle. Try those two and I think you'll like it even more.

Here in America, we forego the Simple Syrup and the whipped cream, and just add 2-3 tablespoons of Irish Cream Liquour, like Bailey's or Saint Brendan's. You can save the whipped-cream for a slice of warm pie.

to whip cream use a Bowl that is as cold as you can get, the dream as cold as you can get it and whip with a back and forth motion rapidly, not in a circle, back and forth gets more air in to it. :-)

Tully!! Oh yes. You are my woman! I love using Tullamore Dew No. 12. I've always wondered if there are different kinds in Ireland. All I've seen are the regular, #12, #18, and the special packaging in the jug.

For a different twist and depending on the mood I am in, sometimes I also add Baileys Original Irish Cream. I always use turbinado raw cane sugar for sweetness and as a garnish.

From my observations the better bartenders around here use a cocktail shaker to whip the cream to the consistency of creme fraiche and float it over the back of a spoon. One particular bartender adds the wiskey to the thickened cream then floats it on top of the coffee (sweetened with demerara simple syrup). This method encouraged me to master the drink at home😋. And yes Tullemore Dew is the best for this drink! This central Florida girl is loving your cocktail videos! Heading to your Instagram for fashion❤

Watched both your hot toddy and Irish coffee video, I loved both of them especially in this lookdown since we all are experiencing it. Here in Toronto Ontario most bars/taverns/pubs rim the glass with sugar for that added extra little sweetness while drinking. Keep up the great work Ciara!!

Never made one of these before. One suggestion, if you're trying to whip cream, it's easier to use a mixer with a whisk attachment. Another way is to put the cream into a shaker and shake it. Great video!

If someone had told me three years ago that I would be watching a pretty Irish girl mix cocktails and mixed drinks, and then sip them in a "Doctor Evil chair" on KZfaq in my spare time, I'd have thought said hypothetical person was a bit crazy. But... Here I am. Ciara, you're absolutely charming. Really. It's honestly almost like having a drink with a friend. You know, except I'm sober. While this format totally suits you, I wouldn't mind seeing some other lifestyle type videos on your channel.

amazon sells frothers (think small hand blenders) for about 15 bucks. great for mixing workout powders, whipping cream, or 'shaking' an egg white drink

So sorry I missed this one earlier - I am subscribed now. My wife and I have enjoyed Irish coffees in the Buena Vista bar in San Francisco many times. It is the best we have had anywhere. It is fascinating to watch the bar tender make three or five at a time! They do not use simple syrup, they use sugar cubes. I bought a box of sugar cubes that lasted us for years which was a good thing, sugar cubes are hard to find now. I ended up ordering Demerara sugar cubes from Amazon most recently. Tullamore Dew is the whiskey to use, I think Buena Vista also uses that brand. I don't mix anything into my Bushmills! I have not tried simple syrup for this drink, I may do that on your recommendation. Buena Vista uses their own premade creme which is kept cold; they just pour it on from a carton. I have used whipped creme as you did here, but switched to a frothed milk from a cappuccino machine. That is not cold and does not chill the hot coffee. And I will say the first time I ever got drunk was at the USAF Officers' Club in Wiesbaden, Germany. I had two Irish Coffees after dinner. I was 15. Cheers!

I use jameson whiskey and then brown suger simple sirup that i make myself. then whisk the cream very little so it just change texture and stay on the top of the drink. easier way to drink and you get everything in one zip and the cream dont stay like a lid on the drink.. and last some nutmeg... try it.. its awsome

On whipping your cream by hand, Ciara: Tilt the bowl toward your right hand (since you are right handed), hold the whisk like a microphone and use plenty of wrist action. It'll whip it up much faster than your technique. Or just buy a Kitchen Aid stand mixer. They're GREAT at whipping cream and you'd love my german chocolate cake that I make with it, and my New York style cheese cake etc, etc, etc.

I follow the same template. 1oz whisky, coffee and cream. However I like to add 1/2 an oz of coffee liqueur, like Tia Maria or Mr. Black.
