Jaclyn Lizzi At least you got something. We had something sort of like that, but other schools don't even bring it up at all. I always wondered why people believe that "The Magical Wedding Ring" will suddenly bestow to couple with sexual education. Why when married are you suddenly safe from pregnancy or various conditions that happen in or around sexual organs? This is like those poor girls who are never told about menstruation and when they get their period, they believe they are hurt or dying.

+Melissa Lewis If more people had the sense to wait for "The Magical Wedding Ring" (and it's real significance), as you so naively put it, and weren't out F#$%ing everyone else at random, there wouldn't be such a need for education on how-to-avoid-sexually-transmitted-diseases-and-not-get-yourself-or-your-partner-pregnant-because-you'll-hook-up-with-anyone-anytime-anywhere-because-you-must-have-sex-right-now. If you're in a committed relationship with another person who has also waited, you have virtually no cause for concern regarding disease. No, you're not "safe" from pregnancy when you're married (pregnancy can still be controlled via many methods), but your probable a damn site better prepared for it then. Marriage, and all that it is a testament to, is treated like a four-letter word and dumped on by too many people world wide. People in general exercise no self control, that's why sex education is so necessary now.

Education is always more powerful than remaining ignorant. Just because waiting for marriage is seen as best ( or at least until you are an adult in your country) doesn't mean that life is better suited for children...and there are sexual organ issues you can get without having sex. People never have self control over there sex drive. That's always been the way and always will be.

In high school my best friend had a pretty bad pregnancy scare, I asked her why she hadn't purchased the morning after pill after having unprotected sex and she said "Uh because they're really expensive, like $50." I'm no expert on the matter but I'm fairly certain raising a child is far more expensive than a $50 pill. Thank GOD turned out she wasn't actually pregnant.

Yeah, the morning after pill is ridiculously expensive, but raising a child to the age of 18 is a hell of a lot more XD Why the fuck do people not use condoms?! STDs are a thing too. Unless it is 100% certain the person is infertile and is STD free, why risk it just because you feel a bit more enjoyment from not having a synthetic layer between you? Because I know what feels better, not having to push a kid out of your vagina at age 14-16 when your body is not even fully developed.

+Alyssa Schiffman True, but sometimes it's just unaffordable to do that when you're 16 if you don't want your parents to find out. My friend had a pregnancy scare when she was 15 and "practicing" having sex with her boyfriend ("oh, it doesn't count, he didn't come inside me" ... "what do you mean I could be pregnant? What's pre-cum? Are you joking???") and even if we'd both clubbed our money together we wouldn't have been able to get her a £30 pill from the pharmacy. Luckily you can also get them free at your doctor's here.

I think THIS may be the most depressing show on US television. I think MTV does an okay job of showing the really, really bad sides of having children so young, but the overall fame of the girls "glamorizes" their situations to many, and (anecdotally, of course) I've heard of girls who DID try to get pregnant young so they could get on this show. Meanwhile, children are being born to children. Very sad.

Nadia Mohamed Yeah, you're totally right. I agree completely. And the "tough realities" aren't really tough at all, because many of the girls (especially on Teen Mom) have income in relation to the show.

Nadia Mohamed You're soooo right. It's really just depressing, because the people who suffer are the children born to these girls. I have an 18 month old daughter, and I honestly just cannot FATHOM a 16 year old trying to raise her. I can barely imagine letting one babysit her! I know there are mature girls who work hard and raise great kids despite having them super young, but they are very special, and they are the exception, NOT the rule.

It's only awkward to buy condoms because someone made you feel that way. I'm 28 and have been buying them since 17. I am proud to be safe and also getting some. I'm from around New Orleans and they teach abscetaince instead of sex ed. So, a lot of my friends had kids at an early age because they didn't know jack shit. People need to stop making sex awkward and something to be ashamed of.

My mom got pregnant at 17. And looking back at my childhood it was a nightmare, she still acts like she’s stuck as a selfish teen. It seems like so many young parents don’t think about the quality of life their child will have and can’t grasp that they aren’t just having a baby. It’s making a person. As a parent you have the most impact on someone’s life, and can be positive or negative. It’s not like having a pet or a doll. Kids won’t love you unconditionally, they won’t stay the same, they’re not yours. They are human beings with thoughts and feelings, the same as you.

Nathaniel Sousa I haven't seen much of the show, but I'm talking about the girls like Amber and Jenelle who are unstable people in general. I have two friends who had children as teens, one at fourteen and one at eighteen. Their lives are probably similar to some of the girls on the show, but they are normal in every other regard. They were just idiots who got themselves knocked up. Amber and Jenelle, however, would have mental problems whether or not that had children so young. MTV shouldn't be profiting off their troubled lives. It's terrible.

Keep in mind these girls, their boyfriends, and their parents all agreed to be on the show and would not be forced to do anything related to this network had they said no. I think you're making a pretty big deal out of nothing, if anything this show is helping by spreading awareness. Now had the girls been upset about being exploited for this, then I can see that argument being valid.

What I learned: 1) Buying condoms is awkward (it's a hell of a lot less awkward than having a baby when you are too young and not ready!) 2) He felt "a bit uncomfortable" by something involving the baby (you can't always spare your feelings; you made this stupid choice!) 3) He "felt like [they] were ready" to get engaged...no, you felt obligated to propose to your girlfriend that you got pregnant because you were too embarrassed to buy condoms. Wow, these people are really winners. I am 25, in a 3 year relationship with our own place and we both have a full-time job. We are not yet ready to have kids. I buy condoms and don't care who judges me (if they say anything, I'll just tell them I prefer having safe sex than taking any risks I am not ready to deal with), and I also spoke to my doctor about getting me set up with the BC pills I have been taking. If you are smart and make good choices, you don't have to deal with the lifelong decision of having a baby before you are 110% ready for it. None of the people shown demonstrated any sort of readiness to become parents. They just sort of threw themselves into it.

I think it's the paranoia and anxiety of going into a public shop for personal needs and having the cashier find your "safety equipment." Or the lessening of pleasure because of "reasons". But now there are more options on contraception like the pill, injections and even surgeries.

As a teenager I would like to say abstinence only education is stupid. Teens are always going to have sex. So teach us how to do it safely. In a way that's not going to lead to STDs and kids. I personally don't plan on having sex any time soon and even I'd I did I don't like boys so I'm not going to get pregnant but you should hear the stupid shit that comes out of the people in my years mouths.

+Melanie Elizabeth Well it they aren't always that simple to get, depending on where you live. For example, broadly speaking it is more rural areas that are the most opposed to anything but abstinence-only programs. So, for example where and when I went to school we had this program taught so at least for the guys class condoms were never mentioned. People could get them if I remember right for free from the free clinic, but no one ever went there because due to the fact the town was so small if someone was seen going in one it didn't take long for word to get around. Sadly, sometimes it is difficult (or probably more accurately said be perceived as more difficult.)

I was 16 when I had my son and I think this show is awful! it glamorizes teen pregnancy and teen parenting. leather jacket guy said it should be shown in every school, unfortunately it has the opposite affect! It's on MTV and I've heard so many young girls say they want to get pregnant because they love this show! I love my son, he is a wonderful young man but we've been through so much together. I cheated him out of a much better life because I was irresponsible. this show sends the wrong message to teenage girls. however, it's the parent's responsibility to not allow their child to watch it. my 13 year old daughter is not allowed to watch it!
