Our Ai time machine takes us back to the wild Atlantic coast of old Ireland. Brought to life in colour and sound using AI neural networks.
Two school girls sing a charming Irish song ( as gaeilge ) about helping their mother bake a cake.
Filmed at a local national school near St Brigid's well in the village of Liscannor, County Clare. May 28th 1929. Just north of Galway and the Aran islands.

The English version of this to this same air.
I’m Mommy’s little helper
I’m only 5 years old
I’ve lots and lots of work to do
I do it when I’m told
I sometimes rock the baby
While Mommy does the beds
And then I get my little stool and sing to sleepy heads
This irish translation goes as follows: ( the first verse is missing)
It doesnt really rhyme or have the meter in English.
Perhaps someone could provide a better translation?
1. Cailín beag is ea mise is [táim] cúig bliana d’aois. Bíonn obair crua ag Mamaí, bíonn sí traochta anois is arís.
Oh, I am a little girl,I'm only five years old. Mammy works hard. She’s exhausted now and again.
2. Déanann Mamaí ciste agus bogaim an cliabhán agus suím ar mo stóilín beag ag ithe canta maith aráin
Mammy makes a cake and I rock the cradle and I sit on my little stool eating a good chunk of bread.
3. Do cheannaíos ar an sráidín tae is siúcra bán. Do chuireas iad sa chiseán chun iad a thógaint [abhaile] slán.
I bought on the street tea and white sugar. I put them in the basket to take them [home] safe.
4. Ar an róidín thiteas is ghearras mo ghlúinín. Do choimeádas greim ar an gciseán is níor chailleas aon ghráinín.
On the wee road I fell and I cut my little knee. I kept a grip on the basket and I didn’t lose any little grain [of sugar].
5. Bím ag insint scéalta ag aer an chaitín bán a chuaigh amach sna coillte agus d’fhan sé ann le fán.
I tell stories about the wonder of the little white cat that went out into the woods and stayed there wandering.
6. Ina diaidh a tháinig Eileen ag lorg an gcaitín is fuair sí é sa deireadh. Is é a bhí i leataobh.
After her came Eileen searching for the little cat and she found it in the end. It was over.

Ireland had an agrarian economy. There was no industrial revolution. So it wasn’t as badly affected by the global depression as many other countries. However, this was in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising, followed by a brutal Irish War of Independence, followed by an even more brutal Irish Civil War. The country was on its knees and 99% of the country was poor. On the other hand there was also great pride in the fact that an independent new Ireland was born and there’s every chance that descendants of these two little girls are living in or around Liscannor. The term ‘working class’ doesn’t really apply here. These girls were either the daughters of small farmers or small businessmen (e.g. shops, pubs, etc.) The population of Liscannor Village today is only about 120. There’s a high possibility that all 120 of them are related to the girls in the vid. 🤣😂🤣

@@mythicalirishman6346 I've used Duo for Irish actually and the thing with languages tho, is that you need to actually actively use it daily to become fluent. You don't get that with Duo Lingo. Duo is a good supplement but doesn't cover actual language learning. Plus, if you don't use it, you lose it. I was a Japanese Major for years and now work in ESL, but I haven't used Japanese in so long I've forgotten most of it. Sad really. My point is that yeah there's Duo.... But they're not going to really ever fluently speak Irish.
