The sod is from Heartland Turf Farm, 1 hour southeast of my home. it was two pallets I installed myself. I cut out by hand/spade shovel the previous KBG sod.

We didn’t know to ask… but THIS is the test we needed! I am so curious to see if that KBG comes back! I am changing strategies to overseeding with KBG for the winter. Rye screws up the Bermuda in the spring while the bluemuda looks amazing until the heat takes the blue away in the summer

That Bermuda looks beautiful and very dark. I would be interested in trying some Bermuda here in NJ. We do have Zoysia so I would think Bermuda would work as well. Great to see you back. Congrats on the 3rd.

It really is dark for its type. I technically knew what it could look like, but up to now my life experience has only been with the crappy common type. Thank you!

Your hell strip of Mazama is what motivated me to go Mazama monostand, but now I know that it isn't the monostand that I wanted, I wanted deep dark green, low cut, blazing stripes, and swift repair. Mazama does some of that but repair it does not do well, it will spread nicely over time if your soil conditions are perfect, but the damage has to be babied quite a bit to bring it back, so my thought is rye mixed in I can just seed patch the problem areas and rye is so quick to germ that the repairs will be much quicker to correct.
@kove
@kove Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the repair of the three type of KBG I've had is essentially negligible. That would work great, but I'd go bonkers seeing the spots of rye (similar to seeing spots of poa).

What up fello STL lawn lover. I have tall fescue in the front. Meyer zoysia in the back. And tahoma on the side. I’m loving the tahoma. I started from 100 plugs from Amazon this summer now I have a side yard. Bermuda is where it’s at for our area. The crazy hot STL summers fry everything else. I’d love to see the iron cutter compared to tahoma. I’m going to replace my fescue next spring and want to pick the best. I know heartland turf has it.

Tahoma 31. It’s supposed to be the best. In ntep trials in Columbia mo., tahoma was rated the best. Iron cutter is the new kids on the block and some say it’s even better.

This Bermuda looks awesome. I have poor men's zoysia (seeded, compadre seed) and it's ok, but far from great. It's a much lighter green. The better cultivars may look better, but most zoysia lawns here actually look even lighter than my compadre. I have a sample of what may be Diamond zoysia and yes, that looks absolutely awesome, but that should be very cold tolerant, it's finicky but very shade tolerant. If I had full sun, I would definitely go with Bermuda. And the zoysia japonica cultivars (medium-bladed) zoysias have stiff blades and are not that good barefoot. Not terrible like St Augustine, but not as soft as Bermuda.

Good info! In my area, most sod farms focus on cool season grass so there isn't much selection of warm season. I can't wait to see this stuff run wild this summer!

I did a Mazama monostand in my front yard, it was a real pain to get it to come in, a full year later and I still have some areas that just didn't want to come in robustly, my take is that Mazama actually needs very optimal conditions to thrive, in North Idaho here it is possible to provide that but only the areas that have perfect watering and soil compaction or lack of compaction being near perfect soil, in the ideal areas that are perfect conditions it looks pretty amazing, and it cuts low real well, but it is sooooooo finicky. Right now I am overseeding with 5 Iron Rye Mix from United seed. The Rye Cultivars are Fastball GL, Stellar 4GL, Slugger 3GL, Superstar GL, and Home Run LS. We shall see how the blue and Rye do together, my thought is they will complement each other, however, my research indicates that Rye chokes out Bluegrass eventually, that's what a study indicated.

Nice cultivars! I'm from the NW, lived in Colville, Cheney, Spokane and Othello. My brother has rye (in Othello) and it looks amazing as well. I didn't notice anything out of ordinary with compaction, but definitely did with the summer heat. Just isn't meant for me :(

Do you think that Ironcutter can handle half day sun or slighly less? My front lawn is North facing (Australia) and receives a lot of sun and heat except for one tree which kinda partially blocks it for about half the day or less. Considering Ironcutter or Zeon Zoysia but not sure and hard to choose. Love your videos on the Ironcutter as there are very few people covering it.
@kove
@kove 5 ай бұрын
Hard to say at this point, the IC was only panted where the KBG died from heat/lack of shade circling the small tree. It has filled in into the area and hasn't shown signs of stopping, but I know it will. I'll update once it starts growing again. Wish I could help more!
@Leo_S94
@Leo_S94 5 ай бұрын
Thank you! Looking forward to the update on how the IC goes around your tree. Its an incredible cultivar. Im going to go Zeon Zoysia at this point as the shade of the tree I think is just too much for the IC and will not shine there. WIll grow for sure but won't thrive. Your videos on IC really highlight how good a turf it is. In Australia it's a new release and not much info on it so thank you ! @@kove

Hi Koven whats the pro & con on iron cutter looking to purchase some in upper transition zone 7b have Tahoma31 now for 2 years it’s absolutely awesome looking to have 2 Bermuda’s on property how does it do coming out of winter and any winterkill?
@kove
@kove Жыл бұрын
I haven't had through all seasons so I can't say with certainty any pro/cons quite yet. However in the NTEP tests I've seen, T31 and IC score very close IIRC. It's full green now, mowed several times, but still not growing at the full summertime rate. The only spots with apparent kill (perhaps still dormant) were on the hill, but I treated those spots with less care. I'll do an update video very soon.

I supplemented rainfall with my sprinkler. Oddly enough I didn't see any fungus this year, I have three different fungicides, each with a different MOA in reserve for that. I'm fairly certain the sun just kept the soil to hot for too long and baked it.

The neighbors certainly is better than the dead/dormant KBG. It's a mix of weeds, bermuda, and TTTF all cut at 3+ inches. Good from afar.
