You've got to remove your front and rear sway bar to fully use the longer travel of the Ironman suspension. Even the stock suspension's articulation is limited by the sway bars. Don't worry, the extra stiffness of the Ironman suspension will keep the car stable on the road, but you have more comfort and traction and articulation off road. Do a video about before and after removing your sway bars, and what it feels like on the street.

You've got to put skidplates on it ASAP. I have all 3 from Primitive Racing and they have taken MANY hits and they are still doing their job. There are other brands too so you can shop around.

You're right about Ironman being the best value. You made the right call by getting the medium springs!
@noobiemtb6081
@noobiemtb6081 Жыл бұрын
why he made the right call by getting the medium springs? I'm planning to get one for my forester wilderness and i'm not too sure what to get. I don't usually put stuffs on my trunk and if I do camping or trail riding, I just load a little bit of stuffs. I do also planning to get a full spare tire so that's gonna be my permanent weight on the rear. Also, I'm planning to put a bumper with winch in the future. should I go get still a medium springs both, spec c both., spec c front medium rear, medium front and spec c rear? also, they said that medium springs sags quickly. thanks!

It’s just that the heavy springs will cause the vehicle to ride rough when it isn’t carrying quite a bit of extra weight. Just really depends on what your using it for and how much weight you plan on carrying. Medium springs definitely, heavy if you plan on carrying a lot weight all the time. Mine is a daily driver and usually empty so heavy springs would be wayyy too stiff

@@_FullSpeedAhead_ thanks for the answer. actually it's kinda mixed opinions regarding heavy vs medium on forums. i don't plan to put anything on the rear except for full size spare tire plus i got some not so heavy recovery gears on my pelican case on roof. and same, this is my daily driver as well but planning to put a front bumper with winch in the future. but probably I'm going to medium for now and if I decided to put more weight on my car then probably I'll just switch the spring to medium to heavy. thank you!

Your rear diff measurements were accurate. The rear subframe spacers lowered your rear diff by 2 inches.

First of all thank you for all the information! That makes sense now, I didn’t realize the spacer lowered the diff as well. I have been looking at the same skid plates they seem to be the toughest ones compared to the others. And I’m looking into removing the sway bars now hadn’t gave it much thought till now

The front and rear departure angles are not great due to the long bumpers. But it’s the middle or breakover that’s going to get you in trouble and these are great with the wheels being closer in the middle than most crossovers. I have a 23 outback and a 20 Grand Cherokee and the measurements are better on the outback. Except the front and rear bumpers. Your lift allows for larger tires which will in turn lift your differential and ultimately the whole car. Lifts are for bigger tires. Bigger tires create ground clearance. I’m sure you know all this just mentioning it. You really did a great job making this video and I’d give it two 👍 👍! Thank you

Sounds like you may be confusing the lift/ground clearance with approach/departure angles on the 3rd test. Not that I am here to defend the suspension differences for you, but what's more important than 2" of lift on that test is having a better approach angle. The wilderness outback addressed that difference for example. You gain almost zero approach or departure angle differences in a 2" lift so it wouldn't really make much difference on the 3rd test there. Agree with your conclusion there that the lift doesn't make a difference on that kind of shelf there.
@davep2945
@davep2945 Жыл бұрын
The areas where you are scraping the front and rear bumpers is not technically considered bottoming out. What you are experiencing is the Outback's poor approach and departure angles. The ratio of lift to an increase in angles of approach and departure is a small one. For instance, the standard Outback has an approach angle of just 18.6 degrees and a departure angle of only 21.7 degrees which are both less than a Honda CRV. The Outback Wilderness which is 8 tenths of an inch taller has an approach angle of just 20 degrees and a departure angle of 23.6 degrees. So for the Outback you gain roughly 1.4 degrees of approach and 1.9 degrees of departure for every 8 tenths of an inch of vertical lift provided Subaru didn't change the bumpers just a bit to help. So your new approach angle is going to be close to 22.5 degrees and your new departure angle close to 27 degrees which still sounds low but is more than the stock 4Runner TRD Pro departure which comes in at 26 degrees. The standard Forester matches the Outback Wilderness approach angle at 20 degrees and beats the Wilderness in departure angle at 24.6 degrees. The Forester Wilderness approach angle with merely half an inch of factory lift beats your 2 inch lifted Outback approach angle at 23.5 degrees though it falls short in departure at 25.4 degrees. This makes me think Subaru did change the Foresters front bumper to help with approach. In any case the Outback unfortunately just has long front and rear overhangs whereas the Forester's are not as long. Approach and departure angles are best increased with high clearance bumpers as you would have to lift your Outback about 7 inches to just match the base 4x4 4Runner or Nissan's Frontier base 4x4 approach angles of around 30.6 degrees.
@_FullSpeedAhead_
@_FullSpeedAhead_ Жыл бұрын
Yeah I was hoping to get a little better approach and departure angles with the lift however your right. The outback’s long front and rear overhangs are its weak point when it comes to off-roading

I don't think that is Subarus fault, it is people taking a car that is made for the road and light dirt or snow, it is not in any way a off road 4×4 vehicle

This wqys the kind of video i was looking for about the ironman's suspension kit. A lot of people just mentions about the 2" of lift but never say a thing about the flexing and actual behavior of the suspension...other than lifting the vehicle...i think that ironman's suspension does not add up to the 4x4 handling that much...flexing is important too and this one just does not deliver...great review!
@_FullSpeedAhead_
@_FullSpeedAhead_ 7 ай бұрын
If I was to disconnect the sway bars it would flex much more but I haven’t bothered with that and don’t want to interfere with the handling bc for the most part we’re on pavement.

Good info! The diff should be relatively unchanged since the sub frame gets dropped for the multi link spacers. I have a pet project of an in-depth analysis of different lifts as well and think this is good stuff. Subscribed.

THANK S--- I kinda thought this anyway-- and besides- at my age and health conditions- I'm NOT going "offroad" anyway-- so I think I'll go with the MAZDA I was looking at for a better ROAD experience.. (better qualtiy inside which is what I need anyway)... (not KNOCKING these wonderful little cars-- because I love these little guys-- if I could afford it- I'd get the MAZDA CX-50 for open road- and one of these for modification and fun.. :)

I have a question for you 4x4 industry experts! (and I wonder if you can tell me if it's true that the ironman nitro gas shocks match well with the original setup and can be retrofitted with the +5? I have a suzuki jimny 4x4 with m13a 1.3 l gas engine with shock absorbers and standard settings, yesterday afternoon I bought the new ironman nitro gas shock absorbers and the 4x4 spare parts dealer in Florence told me that these ironman nitro gas shock absorbers are suitable for 4x4 off-road vehicles with original finish or in a second you could put the springs higher and it would become a +5 high finish, is that true? Greetings from Florence, Italy!)

From the testings I've seen Ironman are only meant for off-roading. If you try towing even the stiffest C spec springs are worse than the factory springs.

How come you didn't get bigger all terrain tires? Every little inch counts. Moreover, instead of getting the popular KO2's which are heavier, you could instead get the Toyo Open Country lll's with superior wheels which could be even lighter than oem set-up which means less unspring weight and also mpg's not being affected.
@_FullSpeedAhead_
@_FullSpeedAhead_ Жыл бұрын
Money and time lol. I didn’t know the toyos were lighter than the ko2’s! I might have put more thought to that. I was preparing this car for a 8+ month long trip and decided the cost of all new tires and wheels would be equal to an over a month of travel expenses so I decided not to haha

I will say I have a 17 Outback, I went then the heavy springs all around for the fact I do a lot of towing and stuff like that. Without weight the Outback rides super nice there’s absolutely no difference in it verse the stock suspension. I’d say the only difference is they are much stiffer when it comes to going over speed bumps but that’s kinda given.

2" lift is going to do not much to a long wheelbase vehicle. Not saying don't put a lift in but it's going to barely change the breakover, departure/entry angles. A wagon just isn't the platform for softroading let alone offroading
