Lesson on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Pathogenesis and Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis, Subtypes, and Treatment. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a very common gastrointestinal disorder that causes recurrent and chronic abdominal pain that is associated with a change in bowel habits. IBS is associated with a variety of conditions including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and major depressive disorder. The etiology of IBS is not entirely known; however, there are likely issues with gastrointestinal motility and visceral hypersensitivity. IBS is diagnosed via history and with the aid of the Bristol stool chart and Rome IV Criteria. Furthermore, IBS is categorized into several subtypes as well. The treatment and management of IBS includes lifestyle changes (dietary changes, fiber intake, psyllium) along with some medical and alternative treatments, which we describe in this lesson.

Does anyone think IBS is linked to mental health? For myself, when I am nervous/anxious/stressed, it all goes to my gut. With the connection to mental health, when you are nervous/anxious/stressed 24/7, IBS is bound to happen for someone like myself when all my stressors go to my stomach. Can anyone relate or anyone feel like mental health plays a role in IBS/gut issues?

You might be on to something...I suffer from IBS-D and I also experience depression from time to time....but I never took the time to connect the two... until now..I can see where being worried all the time, dealing with hurt and pains...orrr.. being"depressed", stressed and any anxiety can contribute to creating IBS-D..meaning: I'm worried, I can't eat, I go days without food, not even realize ING I went days without food, I do this to my body for 2-6 years??? It's gonna take its toll on your body and destroy not only your stomach but with worry and depression you often also have heart decease and so much more...I can definitely see a connection..tfs..

When you have IBS your body floods your bowels with the water in your body and sends it directly to the bowels. This causes you to feel the same feelings of a panic attack: racing heart, dizziness, feeling faint, rush of adrenaline and an urgency to 💩…. I know because I was dealing with what I called “anxiety poops” where every time I had anxiety I needed to poo. But it was ACTUALLY the other way around! The urgency to poo was causing panic attacks! My dietician put me onto the low fodmap diet and I have had TREMENDOUS improvements. With fibromyalgia and CFS/ME. I still get flare ups, but they are not near as awful as they were before the low fodmap diet. I am in the reintroduction phase now and having some issues. But I am still encouraged in healing my gut. Gut health is absolutely critical in mental health. All of my issues began when I tapered off my prescription benzo anxiety med. I never had anxiety or panic like this until I stopped taking it. It ruined my gut health, thus ruining my neurological health and my brain-gut neurotransmitters.

I got diagnosed with IBS going into my senior year of high school (now a college graduate). However, not knowing at the time, I did struggle a lot with anxiety and depression since I started middle school and only very recently was medically diagnosed with GAD and chronic depression. Plus being lactose intolerant since my freshman year of high school. Knowing that I had GAD and chronic depression before would have been helpful a lot XD. I ended up being put on meds for about 3-4 years, modified my diet, doing exercises like pilates, and taking probiotics when I can. Now I'm having little to no symptoms unless I'm really stressed out and find myself eating foods again I couldn't eat when I first had IBS.

@@TheSwordOfGod0 I started off with the LOW FODMAP Diet as reccomend by my doctor when I first got diagnosed while also keeping a food diary of all the foods that were a trigger for me in order to avoid them. Now since I have an idea of what I can and cant eat, I'm on the Mediterranean Diet plus an Inflammatory Diet with some modifications that benefit from my LOW FODMAP Diet with foods/recipes I know I can eat. IBS is different for every person, especially their trigger foods, but the LOW FODMAP Diet definitely helped me find what was best suited for me. I would definitely say, if you cant see a doctor, first get an idea of what kind of symptoms and bowel issues you're struggling with from IBS and go from there since not every diet will benefit all IBS symptoms as a whole. At the beginning, I struggled with nausea, bloating, and mostly constipation.

She is right. There is no medicine in allopathic system that can cure it permanently. Homeopathy has an answer to this problem. It would have been better if you got the treatment very early in your life, but there is still some possibility in it. Find a good homeopath and please consult him/her. Also, IBS is often psycho-somatic. Which means some effects especially stress and anxiety on the mind translates itself into a physical disease such as IBS.

@eightiescrazy
@eightiescrazy Жыл бұрын
I really resent the 'visceral hypersensitivity'/'altered perception' theory. I know the difference between the 'normal' sensations associated with needing the bathroom, and the extreme distension, nausea, cramping and alternating C-D that I now get fairly regularly since my coeliac disease became active and triggered a worsening of IBS 2 years ago. If you are that distended and constipated, or having sudden diarrhoea, it's bound to hurt a bit more than the usual feeling of needing to poop! But the pain doesn't distress me. It's the disruptive and unpredictable nature of my other symptoms! The gut-brain connection also works both ways. It IS anxiety-provoking if you dont know whether you will manage a bus journey without suddenly needing to defecate, or if you will be able to complete your work tasks without having to keep stoppping to run tok the bathroom! I get so fed up of doctors dismissing people's problems as psychosomatic when they cannot find a cause or treatment for the symproms. My husband was dismissed as having 'anxiety' when he went to the doctor about back pain as a teenager. A few years later, he was diagnosed with end stage renal failure. Kidney disease and other conditions arent always easy to detect in the earlier stages, but it is irresponsible for physicians to palm people off when there is nothing immediately detectable, especially when it is a patient who has not shown any previous signs of health anxiety. IBS, although not a clinically serious condition does have physical causes. They just aren't fully understood yet. And they certainly can be debilitating.

Question: I think I have the Rome IV criteria because although I don't experience a lot of diarrhea or constipation, I do have frequent pain (for months) and there is definitely a change in bowel habits - I'm going more than I used to but with less volume. Does that count? Can it still be constipation if there are normal, but less frequent, movements?

Male, 25 years old. I’ve been totally fine my whole life and then I was having cramps in my lower left abdomen. I thought it was a UTI because I almost peed the bed, turns out it wasn’t a UTI. Then thought it was a hernia so I went to the ER. Got an X-ray and ultra sound and they couldn’t find anything wrong other than “mild constipation” they told me to take a laxative. My first time ever taking a laxative and it worked good but ever since I took that laxative I have had type 1 stools for 3 months now with bad constipation. I have a colonoscopy in a few weeks to see what’s up for sure

If you start/stop having to wipe again and again and again no worries! Just another spray of water and dry it with some tp. It made my life much better I still have what is probably IBS but going to the bathroom is way less anxiety inducing. I will go to the doc after this to get a firm answer. You do too! It begins in early childhood, not young adulthood in my family. My mother had frank diagnosed Chrones all her life. I've had IBS since before 4 years old. My daughter had it from birth and has it even now in her 40s. My neice had it from birth. My granddaughter had it from early childhood. In my family many people, all female, have it and all related to my mother who is the first person with intestinal symptoms that we know of. It does not improve in time in my family but it can change from IBS-C to D to M. Subsequent to my mother nobody had Chrones, but there is irritable bowel in greater or lesser degree.

This shit has been fuckin with me for 2 years, and idk if its ibs or not. There is a million things that can be said but I feel like anxiety can be a big factor. Whenever I eat something and don't even think about it while leaving the house it's like my fuckin body has an extreme awareness and knows that if I'm not near a humble toilet then I'm going to shit myself. The only success I've had to leaving the house is to empty my bowels before and not eating anything at all for a day. That way my stomach knows I don't have anything to digest. But having to make up 2 years of school is tough, I just gotta regain myself and power through honestly. Like I said a million situations and probabilities have occurred to me but when I step out of the house it feels like I can digest food and shit myself in like 10 mins. Smfh

Gotta attack the vascular system or that should be the starting point because more than likely that IBS starts at the toilet by way of ghost bowel movements. The use of pressure promotes which also hits at those associated issues progressively. One may want to reverse the vasculars which may free up everything internal.

Would you look into any research that connects IBS with endometriosis? I’m in a Facebook group about endo and heard there can be a hormonal IBS, usually due to either endo scarring or attachment to the intestines. Episodes happen monthly at the start of the cycle with Constipation for a week or two before the cycle. It eliminates everything, with exhaustion (lying on bathroom floors), shaking, a fear of death, intense sweating and can lead to hospitalization for dehydration and fainting. Would you do a video about this?

Sounds like you didn't change your diet and consequently had a recurrence. You can't play around with this. It will eat your stomach alive and cause autoimmune if the contents are entering your blood stream. Will cause full body inflammation and many other conditions. Clean up your diet for good. I know you cant give a diangosis but can you say if bowel obstruction can come and go? I can take a full poop on ocasion so I would find comfort that it would not even be possible to make a full poop, or if obstruction just makes it harder... because my symtoms happened after heavy lifting its more concerning ive had a xray but appearntly they are bad at diagnosing it
