A new paper looked at Irritator, a spinosaurid from Brazil. It found that the mouth was much different from what we normally see in theropods. But it also starts the conversation on an irritating part of the fossil's history.

Spinosaurids are the most utterly chaotic dinos. I always find interesting how Irritator’s movement-tracking brain could help them eat pterosaurs when the opportunity presented itself. There’s a pterosaur fossil from the same formation with bite marks that match Irritator’s teeth. It’s just very unclear whether it’s a sign of predation or scavenging
@RaptorChatter

Yeah, it would be interesting to see them today, just to figure out how they lived. Most other theropods seem so much more straightforward, but spinosaurids are wild.

And herons and storks are not too picky eating things like rabbits or mice as readily as they'd eat fish. And herons do like small crocodiles too, scale that to a 8m spinosaurud and I can see a 3m goniophilid being on the menu.

I strongly recommend that you hit them up in the channels: "Canal do Pirulla", "Zoomundo" and "Colecionadores de Fósseis", since every one of them have worked/studied abroad in U.S. or European universities. While they do have longer snouts, many of them have wider rear portions of the skull, which allows more muscle fibers to be packed in for a stronger bite. There is a very similar ethical quandary when it comes to Assyriology (the study of Sumeria, Babylonia (aka Sumeria but later), and yes, Assyria). It is ofc, illegal to take any artifact (usually in this case cuneiform tablets) that was excavated after 1970 out of its country of origin. This... doesn't tend to stop it from happening and especially during times of war, e.g. the Gulf War, a ton of stuff was illegally excavated and smuggled out. The conundrum is that there is no way to *prove* that any given artifact was illegal smuggled after 1970, so there are very wealthy people with massive private collections of these objects of great scholarly value. The real ethical challenge for those in the field is whether to study/translate these items when offered the chance by these private collectors.

It’s unlikely that their jaw splits like most people seem to think, it is more likely that it’s jaw is flexible and widens at the back of the jaw, allowing large fish to easily slide down it’s throat with minimal difficulty, while also allowing it to have an effective bite (despite being weak), rather than it’s bite being weakened by the jaw separating into two halves.

I wonder if they could have carried their young croc style. If they did have a (small) throat pouch to swallow larger prey they would definently have room for one or two babies.

I actually listened to one of the authors, Marco Schade, defending his PhD thesis last thursday because he works at the university that I go to. He said that he only had the skull fossil for a limited amount of time to work on. Like you said the authors are not in charge and more importantly: they don't own the fossil. Truth be told, I don't know about the laws and special conditions about the ownership of this skull but since we're talking about Germany it'll probably be very convoluted anyways.

I’d probably die before scientists figure out what spinosaurids are like.

It could have been an egg eater, I mean there is a modern reptile who's whole purpose is for just that. To the point it's spine developed I think serrated edges to slice open eggs passing through it's body.

I buy it. Birds are dinosaurs after all. If it can happen in birds it can certainly happen in extinct dinosaurs. The fish diet of spinosaurids backs up this claim also.
