Possibly the most helpful controller info ever for me at least. I am far from being new to this, but sometimes the bells and whistles can be quite alluring! Thanks for the great video. I got a controller (Faderport 8) for the transport controls and motorized faders. I love being able to mix live with the faders and also being able to use them for automation. While my controller can map out and control plug ins, I still find it much easier to just use my mouse. I also use my iPad with Logic which works great when I'm across the room. So it really is up to how you like to work.

Brilliant video and impeccable timing, I have a carpenter coming tomorrow to measure up for a studio desk (based on Mike Enjo's desk) so I can fit an ICON QCon Pro G2 Universal Control Surface. Just starting out, I know I don't need it, but I think it will make my workflow better from the start and set me up for good workflow habits. I watched another video you did on DAW controllers, and this video has assisted in my decision making process. Thanks Dan, great stuff!

I literally searched "who should get a daw controller" this evening, wondering if it's something I should invest in ... I didn't know this video was uploaded on today's date till after watching and I scrolled to the comments just now. Timing is crazy!! I am the guy with the keyboard & pads central to my set up. Wondering if a one track device would be up my ally. ( like a single channel faderport or x touch)

With your advice I went for the Qcon G2 +2 extenders absolutely love them . It's the nearest I'll probably get to having a full 24 channel board in the forseable future. As you highlighted if you want a mixer at the centre of your setup it beats using a mouse any and every day of the week. It's true you do need to prioritise your desk real estate but I guess like everyone else you arrive at what suits your work flow best whether it be just 8 faders or 24. Great vid bud people thinking of getting one have justt been given some great insights.

I really appreciate your comments and practical insight on this. I'm thinking about getting new controllers, right now I have the originally Euphonix MC Control and MC Artist and the faders are starting to glitch and sometimes NOT move as I change banks so when touching them to make a move in automation on the intended channel it jumps to where the previous targeted channel fader was. Haha I don't have to tell you how this can screw up your mix and day. I'm going to take a look at the Icon gear.

Great video! Thanks. Some of your comments can be extended to cover control surfaces that are part of a MIDI keyboard controller. I had a Nektar Panorama P6 with 9 non-motorized faders and one motorized fader, plus a bunch of buttons and rotary encoders. The non-motorized faders need a software host that supports "soft pickup" (not doing anything until the fader is moved to the current value in the DAW). Five years ago, not a lot of DAW controller interface software supported that feature (don't know about today, since I've moved to a control surface with no faders), so it needs to be confirmed before you set your expectations. For example, the proprietary interface protocol of the P6 never worked properly with PreSonus Studio One, even though Nektar claimed it did. The motorized fader NEVER worked in the motorized mode for me. I wound up landfilling the P6 when its color displayed failed, and replaced it with a Native Instruments S61 MkII, with no faders and fewer buttons and rotary encoders. Those at least work well in Studio One. It's nice to have control surface functionality as part of a keyboard controller (especially the transport controls), if for no other reason than to save a USB port. I had an original PreSonus FaderPort, but didn't use it much, and regretted the amount of desktop space it used, even for such a small control surface.

Thank you! And thanks for your insights! Yes, midi controllers are a whole topic unto themselves. I'm not a huge midi guy so I don't have any but that would be a great topic for someone to cover. Your P6 experience aligns with why I talked about longevity and integration. They are huge considerations. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video. I liked the pros and cons you listed. I just purchased the Faderport 16 and am just going to install it today. I am a Studio One user, so I'll be looking to see if integration with the PreSonus native plug-ins are better than with the 3rd party plug-ins. I would expect so.

@@LonelyRocker I found your controller video quite interesting. I have a Presonus StudioLive 32S model (33 faders) which I use with Studio One DAW software. It works very well as a controller with the software, but the mixer does have a learning curve for the multiple layers it can offer. * Being more of an old school analog guy who's used to a large format modular (inline) console, I am thinking of buying the SSL UC1 controller. I have the free plugin trial now and put the plugin across all my DAW mixer channels as to emulate a console with EQ and Dynamics on each channel. The UC1 should make it more like an analog console and hopefully increase work-flow (Hoping it will should I buy it). Phil

Yes I've covered DAW controllers quite extensively...wait to see what I have coming up very soon ;) That UC1 looks interesting but only if you are committed to their plugin. I’ve been looking at the qcon for a while. I use maschine inside logic for my plugin controls bc I love nks. This might actually be the perfect mixer for the electronic music producer. If I can program it for maschine software without logic, I’d be very happy, and it would probably ditch logic for good. Mixing in maschine with knobs just don’t cut it and those faders are very nice on the qcon. thanks for the video and it covered a lot of great info.

Thanks for your kind words! I love the topic and you can be assured more is coming. As for DP, I don't use it myself. It's not so much Icon supporting the DAW. It's the DAW supporting the controller protocols. So as long as DP has maintained support for the same protocols then the Icon gear should still work just fine....just keep in mind I can't test that ;)

I recently got the QCon Pro G2 8-channel because of all the great videos about it. I got it all set up, made it work and learned how to use it. I use Logic with primarily soft synths. I found having the control surface was an obstacle to my well tuned work flow. It's certainly neat, it's cool to look and I can show it off to my friends, but was it useful? Nope. If I wanted to get anything done quickly without hassle, my pair of 4k monitors and a mouse is fine. The only advantage was the ability to have your fingers on more than one fader and never once did I need that. When I write automation data, I just draw it in with the mouse and get precisely what I need or use the mouse on a virtual fader and do it that way. Using the control surface was slow and clumsy in my opinion. The names of tracks as they appear on the little screen are truncated in the middle, so you get to decipher each name when you look at it, that takes time. Also, big disadvantage, Cats. I have two and they have free run of the studio. They like walking on the control surface and then all hell breaks loose. Plus I found the scrub wheel of the QCon Pro G2 to be useless, going backwards would knock you right to the top of the sequence. Also, the faders were always not responding to read correctly, and they make noise when they move, they move in a staggering step motion, not smooth on long fades. I had to turn it off when I was doing quiet listening. So, I returned it. If you use Logic, get an iPad and use the virtual Logic control surface, that rocks.

Love my Qcon pro x and extenders, they are amazing units. Having hands on faders is worth it alone, never mind the programming you what to do, the jog wheel, the zoom features and the pan knobs. Closest thing to having an analog board in front of you without the $75k price tag lol In regards to the second screen on the pro x, mine works with Logic, it shows the channel number from left to right across the 3 units I have. Not sure why yours isn’t working?

Mechanical faders are great to have but they tend to cost 10x as much so you can buy a 1000$ controller or you can buy a 100$ one. For most hobbiests getting something like a mixtrack pro by numark makes way more sense as you get 4 channel faders plus a mixing fader - and a whole bunch of knobs, external soundcard and it can be used for djing also with two platters. A control surface with automated fasders like that will cost probably another 1000$ or more. I think for someone setting up a working studio with tax write offs getting automated fades can make sense but if you are a hobbiest paying out of pocket moving faders is just sort of a novelty. Unless you move the fader in the software program it is going to be in the same position as the DAW anyway. The only time you are going to use faders is if you want to work them for automations as an instrument of sorts otherwise its really not that important, so great to have but you are going to need to ask yourself, is there a better use for this 1000$.

Almost doesn't make sense for me to have anything less than what is on the mixtrack as there are only so many usb connections available. I am curious. I have watched some of your other videos on this topic, but the prices on even the single fader and smaller 4 channels just seem insane. I have faders from things like the old maudio xsession and the numark mixtract, as well as knobs and pads from things like the axiom 25 and my old general music keyboard hooked up with the midi to usb connector, a akai drumpad midi device. It just feels like the motorized part isn't really going to do much for the cost, but I am all ears very eager to see what budget options there are. The keyboards with sensitivy you depending on how hard you play a note will move the slider to whatever amplitude position you play, sort of cool. What I actually wanted to get was a cheap multitrack mixer that also had USB connections so you can use it as a control surface (control mechanical automation not required) they have so many cheap knockoffs but they are all usb recording on the master, with no individual knob or slider control linking, sadly, I don't see how that would massively add to the cost of production sad no one is doing those things you can get a 16 channel multitrack mixer for under 300$ now but no control linking for auotmation and no multitrack record only master track record, very sad no one is putting out that product, unless you know of one.

Sounds like they are just not for you. And that’s ok. These are not critical to good mixes. There “nice to have” devices.

The future is voice control. If you are on a Mac using Monterey or Ventura, it's already here. I tell my computer to stop, forward, record, arm track, add track...it's amazing. I use a mouse for some things but many things in the transport are so easy to set up. I can tell my computer to go to make xxx.....All the tools are voice controlled, ...it's addictive. Once you go down this road, .....lol. I have not been able to see or imagine a need for a DAW controller. Automation is way more precise and easy to set up via mouse, keyboard and voice control. IMHO. I have a DAW controller, I never use it.

I can see in the future a device that emulates a mouse for those nostalgic about the old way of mixing ;)))))))

The best alternative to daw controllers could be mixers, which can be used as daw controllers, and for midi automation. Plus they can replace your audio interface or serve as an input / output extension to an audio interface.
@LonelyRocker
@LonelyRocker 10 ай бұрын
Generally mixers are not able to control midi. There are simple controllers without motorized faders that can do the job. But getting into mixers with built in audio interfaces is a great solution but a completely different topic...

@@LonelyRocker Maybe mine is a unicorn: I've been using a Tascam FW-1884 for more than 10 years. It's a mixer, an audio interface and a control surface, it has motorized faders, and actually controls midi better than a Faderport V2. Not sure about the newer Tascam models, but I assume they're even better.

Oh they do exist...I just meant this video was not focused on those hybrid devices. I was specifically discussing controllers....I've resisted all in ones only because I want the flexibility to change audio interfaces as I require but they are great solutions no doubt...

It really depends. If I am doing full band recording. Then yes. I'd prefer at least 16 channels. But as I am not doing that anymore. I just like having 8 faders for automation. Having at least a fader to me is better than none at all. But I found that I much prefer a bit more than one. But for just setting the foundation of the mix. I don't find DAW controllers all that useful other than it being a bit more fun. Things like controlling plugins are just more bothersome for me. It just always feels clunky.

Good insight. I admit my setup is a bit overkill. I may scale it back at some point. 8 faders are VERY functional and can handle the load.

That was my third and last video. Aside from touching on automation (by saying 'I like automation' which is a massive part of successful production is poor. No detail on latch/read and the benefits) this is another video explaining the obvious. desk space and and all the froth in the rest of the videos. Show, in detail and on screen, how to get a better mix using midi controllers....the rest will follow.

Sorry you had a bad experience. I’ve had Icon gear for years and never had an issue. I’ve heard people complaining about the SSL boards too. Seems experiences can be inconsistent with these devices. Hence, why I made the video 😎

Even the Fairlight DAW is just a glorified keyboard and mouse. They don't have any inputs so they are only useful in post-production. They are not digital recorders.

Yes. It’s all about hands on control when mixing. But that is quite an added bonus if you’ve never used one.
