Is a Snap-on Tool Box Worth the Money?

Күн бұрынI bough my Snap-on KRL1023 about 2 years ago, it’s 12.2019 at the time of this posting. In this video I talk about my experiences with the tool box and how I feel about working out of it for the past 2 years.

If they aren’t yet, they will be soon. Tool Vault is already a better option in my opinion, more expensive then HF but way cheaper then SO with comparable quality.

Yep. I worked out of a HF box with 2 side cabinets and a hutch for 15 years. The drawer slides were not that good. The lock eventual broke and the struts leaked and wouldn't stay up. Bought a 68" Epic box with a stainless steel top to replace it. The quality of the SO box is so much better than HF. Now I paid cash and my dealer sold it to me or less than half of the retail price.

Icon is miles away from snap on 72 by 25 for 4000$ with coupon no thanks I got my master series for 72 byv30 for 3000$ and those drawer slides are amazing remove a set from a snap on and remove one from a icon they ain’t built nothing like the snap on ones

I think the fact you went 15 years on a $400 tool box is enough proof that $6700 or 13k isn't necessary. There are good quality boxes for much less.

i bought an older husky tall type box off a guy for 300$ few years back...couldnt be happier ...i was working out of old filing cabinets before that...

I bought a $200 one from Walmart as a special buy for $200. It's not as big as Eric's but 6 years later, no squeaks.

I made my own. All in all, 1k Euros in materials and let's say my own time. If i smash mine against that Snap-On box, the SO might dent horribly bad. Used 2 mm thick plate. Moral of my story, just because they ask 16k or whatever the absurd price, doesn't mean they actually put 16k innit. And mine doesn't even come close to the box i based my work on, which was the box a good friend of mine ordered made from a fitter's shop. That thing, i'm pretty sure you could rest a van on top of it.

I had a race car for 20+ years and a small open trailer and a shoestring budget. Some guys had a huge expensive enclosed trailer that was bigger then my garage. I have yet to see a trailer win a race.

We race sprint cars, the name of our team is back yard built racing, because we don't have the money to send our shit out like the big dogs, we do it ourselves outback in the garage, and we still can compete with the best!

I have that issue atm. I don't have a good cement area to place a tool box so I keep everything in duffle bags and bins. Works but it's a pain when that one wrench you need is hidden at the bottom of the bag.

@@snap-off5383 I'm with you, dude! Tools belong on a peg board where you can see all your tools in a glance and get it down quickly. But that prolly won't work in a large repair shop, especially if you have to buy and use your own tools.

Buy snap on slide top roll cart for daily use tools, buy cheap HF big box for overflow and infrequently used tools. I use roll cart for 90% of work.

Yea you hit the nail on the head! My big box holds all my "overflow" tools that dont get used that often and my roll around cart gets used almost 100% for daily use and has all my sockets, pliers, screwdrivers, ect in it!

That was the plan when I sold my triple bank Mac and got a 40" Matco cart. Unfortunately it's a little big for the space I have to use it so I roll around the old harbor freight 5 drawer usually.

that’s big facts , the old heads in my shop don’t be using tool cars they be leaving al sockets wrenches ratchets in their big box and have to keep going back to their box to grab a tool. i love my tool cart don’t lose any time

Eric, I am a corporate sales developer for Snap-On whose responsibility is help support franchisees. I just so happen to live not too far from your shop and the franchisee in the Mason area knows about you. As a matter of fact, two weeks ago we stopped by your shop together (don't believe you were there). He drives by your shop every Wednesday morning. Jacks Auto Repair but Eric has a huge following and his opinion can potentially make a dent in Snap-On’s sales. Better to fix his box for $50 than to lose sales on tools worth thousands.

@Jacks Auto Repair If the warranty isn't transferable, that makes the Snap On box an even worse buy. A $13k toolbox would have much better resale value if it had manufacturer support. Eric will get his fixed because he is who he is, but your normal mechanic is SOL. Harbor Freight's boxes are better anyway.

@@saddestchord7622 Harbor Freight sells junk. Period. You'll get a better toolbox at Lowe's. To the O.P., your best bet is to email eric@ericthecarguy.com or perhaps biz@ericthecarguy.com You might catch him in the Stay Dirty Lounge over at EricTheCarGuy.com He needs a bigger toolbox, anyways. I was surprised when he bought this dinky little thing. You guys should hook him up with the 84" Epiq series, a nice hutch work center, and some side cabinets with extra drawers. Yes, I know I'm talking about a roughly $25,000 set-up but, like you said: His following is massive and his opinion and experience can either help or hurt Snap-On as a whole. Also, while I've got the attention of somebody with Snap-On corporate: You guys need to get your prices under control. Me and several techs I know are officially done buying Snap-On tools. The other brands are every bit as good at a fraction of the cost and carry the same warranty. Plus, if techs need a warranty repair/replacement, all we have to do is call or text the other brand rep, and they service our needs faster than Snap-On.

ShopTalkWithJason the new Craftsman boxes are not comparable to the US General boxes. I had considered the new Craftsman set up to replace my older Craftsman setup, but looking at the Craftsman now and the US General the flimsiness of the Craftsman is obvious. The US General is the better value.

I’ve never had a problem with any of my Snap-On boxes. I’ve had 3, a classic, a master, and now an epiq. I paid $2200 for my classic, $5000 for my master, and $5000 for my Epiq. I completely agree, at least the 2 upper series model boxes should have soft close drawers. I checked out the Icon from HF and it’s a nice box as well. What I do notice is they are not very deep (24” vs snap on 29-30”) I also noticed the comparison flyer that shows a picture of a Snap-On Master series box and the master series price, but lists the classic series box dimensions & weight. In this field you notice other mechanics tool box shame you. Hell, I’ve caught myself doing it. At the end of the day it’s your money, spend it how you like it. I’ve known techs with every name brand tool and box but couldn’t figure out how to install a starter. And I’ve known techs that work out of a 3 foot tall tool cart filled with HF and Husky who could solve any issue. Personally, it makes me happy walking in to my big Barney color Snap-on tool box every shift.

i love my snap on box.. got it used for cheap. after 4 years my slides are quiet. cant say i had any issues with it. thanks eric!

Was a Pro photographer 40 years ago. Went through the same thing with cameras. It is a learning process that teaches you about the rest of your life. When you're trying to decide about houses, cars, women, etc. you'll remember what you learned about that tool box, you'll make a decision and be 100% HAPPY about it because of what you learned from that tool box. A content man is not born that way, you learn from your mistakes.

Had my craftsman box since I started wrenching in 2006, upgraded last year to a KRA2411 from snap on. I paid 2500 for it and I really like it, but I feel like I spent a little more than it’s worth in utility because I had always wanted a snap on box.

I have a KTL1023 and am very happy with it. One of the reasons I bought it was that it was made in Algona, Iowa and I grew up about 90 minutes from there, so I want to support the people of that town. I can tell you that my slides do not make any noise and I have had it for about two years now.

My son is in tech college right now and yes the truck guys were putting on the sales pitches, but we just picked him up a US General Series 2 56" double bank. That thing is awesome and with coupon we paid $649. Yes SnapOn is the best, but I am spending on SnapOn for him where it counts (wrenches, ratchets, etc) and saving where it makes the most sense. I am happy to have this input from ETCG whom I respect immensely.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Eric. I've yet to buy a decent tool box, but I felt much the same as you after buying an new Couple de Ville in 1977. It ran, and it was luxurious, but it came with squeaks and rattles from day 1. SO disappointing that I got rid of it before it was one year old.

I bought a new Matco 6s 2-bay tool box with a side drawer bank and half hutch/chest 4 years ago. I LOVE working out of that tool box! I have the power drawer to keep all my power tools (their batteries) charged at the ready at all times and it has USB and electrical outlets in the hutch and front as well. I never realized what a useful feature that was until I started working out of the that toolbox. My toolbox has no squeaks or issues whatsoever, it is a pleasure to work out of (along with my cart) and I have no regrets about having spent the money to purchase it. In fact, I want to add to it if I still can since Matco has gone to the Revel series.

I've had my Snap On Classic for almost 25 years and I bought it used as a repo. I use Super Lube. You can get it at Harbor Freight. I put it on about every 2 years and it works great. It just takes a little dab. I have beat my Snap On to death over the years and it still works like a new one. I do agree that you can get a perfectly good box these days for much less money, but 25 years ago that wasn't the case when I got mine. When I ran out of room a few years ago I added a Craftsman to the side of it. It isn't nearly as well made, Thinner gauge metal, the paint chips and scratches, but it has held up just fine so far and It was on sale for top and bottom box for $400.

My first couple of boxes were craftsmen, and I think they are cheaper in quality compared to harbor freight or master force. But I realize that when you are first starting out money plays a huge role in what you can or can't get

Frugal Prepper I think that's a big reason why people continue to buy snap on and they can command the prices they do. Don't get me wrong, if you want the best they're a pretty safe bet but the older techs came up without the options there are today and a lot of them have been drinking the Kool aid so long they make the next generation feel like it's necessary to be a real mechanic.

Those drawer slides are lifetime warranty. I've had my Snap On KRL1022 for 15 years, and it's holding up very well. They're not that hard to change out either. My Snap On guy ordered them up for me, and took the old ones back with no questions asked.

I have been using a craftsman quiet glide box for over 10 years and I've been incredibly satisfied with it! I did buy an upgrade set of wheels for my own piece of mind since it stands 6 and a half ft tall closed with a ton of weight in it. Getting ready to change jobs I've purchased another craftsman box which is 52 in wide so I can have the top as a work bench. I got the luxury of soft close ball bearing drawers in the new one but it doesn't feel like the build quality is up to the standard my old one had. Time will tell. I have a snap-on box that I am not happy with either, but I don’t really think the Matco or Mac boxes are any better. I think going with a cheaper tool box, spending your money on quality tools and a really good roll cart is the way to go!

I am a beginning enthusiast mechanic, mostly just DIY on my own cars and the occasional client. I just purchased the US General 5 drawer cart from HF, and although I haven't had anything to compare it to, I can say that it's an excellent product and I absolutely love it so far.

I have an Arsenal of Husky and Harbor Freight tool boxes and have been very happy with them. I’ve made custom foam cutouts for my tools which takes away the need for soft close as the tools aren’t going to budge, and it also really helps with tool organization. If there is a missing tool it’s overtly obvious and the cutout shape tells me exactly which tool it is. For wrenches and sockets I’ve made labels to put on the foam that tells me where each wrench and socket goes.

Forgot to mention that I bought all my tool boxes at Harbor Freight sidewalk sales for about 60% off for scratch and dent. I couldn’t be more happy with my financial investment. I’d rather put the money saved into better tools. I’m not a mechanic, just your average DIY guy that has learned 90% of what I know from yours and other KZfaq channels.

Meh, i have harbor freight and husky - they did not fail me for almost 20 years . Cheap and still works .

I work out of a KMP1163 with a stainless steel top. I agree with you that as its not worth the price tag. That being said, I do not regret my purchase, I love my box and I would buy it again. When I get to work I see my box waiting for me and it makes me feel good. I havnt had your issues with drawers on my snap on boxes. I dont have any complaints or dislikes in my experience with snap on boxes. A box of the same size from any manufacture would have been the same as far as working out of it. But seeing my snap on box makes me feel good and gets my day started. There are harbor freight tools in my snap on box that i have used for years and still use every day in a professional environment. When I first started I bought a $300 craftsmen toolbox from sears and filled it with harbor freight tools the day before I went to work in a shop for the first time. I still have that box and the tools.

I bought a Husky box that normally goes for $300, but I only paid $150 because it was damaged in shipping. It's not as big as that Snap-On box you've got there (about half that size, actually), and it has a wooden top, not stainless steel, but for only $150?! Worth every last penny.

I have a Snapon Master Boss box and a kobalt Lowe’s brand I believe. I work out of the kobalt box more and actually prefer it over the Snapon. As you said Eric the Snapon drawers just aren’t what you would expect with spending so much money. I tell the younger kids in my shop to buy anything but the big brands for a tool box, just fill it with good tools. Don’t waste your money

I’m not a mechanic but I’m a woodworker and I was talking to a guy who was bitching about his 20 year old son spending 10k on a snap on tool box because the other guys in the shop are all about them. So being a younger guy he probably felt some peer pressure and made a really big purchase. This just doesn’t make sense to me if I was a mechanic I’d get a $400 one and maybe make organizers for it. But for sure I’d make sure I’d have the most expensive tools I could afford and then when I’m older and financially better buy some ridiculously priced box. You could do a lot of fun stuff wirg 13k

I bought a KRA 2423 4 years ago for half price with a stainless top and a free tool cart to boot. I ;love it and wouldn’t trade it for anything. Haven’t had any problems.

I've got a 40" Craftsman I got for like $460 at least 5 years ago. Fantastic box, the pull handles that are also locks is the best design, stainless looks great, cleans well. No complaints. Unsure what their current offerings would be.

I bought a used Mac Tech series cabinet used from my Snap-On dealer and have had zero regrets. It's like a fine piece of furniture, or an expensive car. Yes, a cheap one would do the same job, but it wouldn't do it as well. I'm pretty sure Snap-On corporate* doesn't deal with warranty issues and it's up to your rep to deal with it. *Unless you're somehow a Snap-On industrial account.

I'm glad you have no regrets. However you are wrong. A fine piece of furniture or expensive car does not do a better job. A properly maintained piece of furniture or car does a better job. I would rather have a hyundai with good tires and brakes then a shit anything. Plus cheaper stuff is cheaper to maintain. I have $905 worth of toolboxes that hold all my tools at work. And that is six boxes.

Hey I too have a mac tools tech 1000 with hutch that I got from my snap on rep. It was comparable to just the 2 bank harbor freight and husky boxes so I'm super happy with it. Only reason I would "upgrade" is for a more versatile drawer layout

I'm just a DIY guy, but I took advantage of the HF Black Friday deal & ordered the 44" box for $100 off, and added the 14.5", 7 drawer side cabinet. Picked it up Saturday morning, then spent the rest of the weekend improving the fit & finish. No squeaks, no rattles, and I'm very happy with my bang for the buck, plus sweat equity, return on investment. Riveted the rear of the rails inside the cabinet, re-crimp all the slides on the drawers, and then use a quality dry lube.

I know this video is old, but... I do own a Snapon box, and am a professional mechanic. One day my Snapon guy got replaced and a corporate guy was training the new guy. They came in and looked at my 30 YEAR OLD box. I had a problem with one of my drawers not opening/closing correctly. I currently have ALL new slides sitting at the shop waiting for my rep and myself to coordinate schedules and install/reconfigure my drawers. I have been wrenching for a long time and the major companies are the only ones that give this kind of service. Yes, I have the same good things to say about Matco and Cornwell. Mac, sadly, has been MIA for years.

I've been a tech for 30 years now and I just treated myself to a snap on box the price yes was expensive but for what you get 6000 for a master series box,work centre and HUGE end cabinet really looking forward to it 👍🏻😎

After having this career for over 30 years, I have no regrets about owning my KRL1023, with top, hutch and side locker. Of course I never paid full price for my boxes, starting with the base, mid ranges, to the Master's series. I always took care of my equipment and always got almost what i paid on trade in, and worked my way up. Status symbol? Surely. Will I buy again? Absolutely. I love my setup.

I bought a second box 2 years ago and looked closely at Snap-On, Matco, US General from Harbor Freight. I decided to gamble and got thr US General. Have never been happier. Not only the money saved made me happy but the quality has been surprisingly good.

Got one of the Husky boxes and am generally happy with it. I do kind of wish I got the version with the soft close drawers because the liners end up sliding and getting bunched up in the back. Some double sided tape may fix this though.

Use spray adhesive to hold them in place. It worked for me.

I use a 26" Craftsman triple stack with the fewest amount of drawers available when I purchased. The number of drawers was important so I could see in the top tray. I can fit the tools i need in there and it works for the amount of space I have available.

I bought two Stanley Vidmar cabinets and put them side by side on a heavy angle iron frame. Had a friend paint them Porsche Red in his booth. I have an 80” wide by 30” deep by 48” tall box with 500lbs capacity drawers for a total price of $1,300. It is the last box I’ll ever need.

US General is good enough for me been working out of it for over 7 years without issue, all drawers close and don't squeak even fully loaded. They open and close and holds tools no issue.

Yeah icon is almost just as expensive as Snap on , You can always wait for the truck guy to go to the toolshow and get a deal on a box And he’ll sell it for low I was offered I think a 56 inch one for around 4k And offered me a 72inch one for less than 6k

My man. I love the honest review. I bought the double bank version of this box used on Craigslist. It was my “dream box” and at $2500 it was a huge stretch for me. Am I happy? Yes. Do I love it? Meh...it’s alright. Will it last me forever? It better!

Spot on. No good tools, no good job. The box is just a storage cabinet for those good tools. Snap on is just another name. Represents nothing to me except a status symbol. And most dudes with that ambition..... their ambition far outweighs their talent. Ever since 1986 I've known this brand to be associated with show ponies. Plenty of other reputable brands of hand tools out there. And heaps cheaper, with better warranties.

Been using a Craftsman since 1987. Went to upgrade last year when Lowe's was blowing out the Cobalt stuff to make room for the Craftsman products. Coincidentally they had the Craftsman boxes at discount prices also. So.... I now have a large Craftsman set up sitting along side my medium old Craftsman. Hopefully have both another 32 years.

Long ago when I first got in this industry. An I was looking at non-tool truck toolbox's. A flatbed wrecker driver gave me his point of view when it came to moving the different brands. It was his perspective that swayed me towards a Snap On or Matco toolbox. Have moved my Snap On toolbox from shop to shop over the years without problems. When considering a toolbox think about weight capacity and well fold up when strapping it down.

Even the tools aren't' that great anymore. Look at some of the comparison tests on here. SO ratchets appear to be good but their wrenches aren't as nice as they used to be.

Where i live (in Australia) our options are pretty limited in my area. I really really got jammed. The snap-on man saw me coming from a mile away! I was a month into my apprenticeship when he stitched me up. Anyway ended up with a smaller box, i still to this day don't know what i paid. But it's held up well and i'm very happy with it! But i do agree with you Eric, tools before box!

First. Thank you for the Birthday wishes. (The day this video was posted is actually my birthday) and secondly I agree with you on the tool boxes. I really want a new one, but the prices for what you get have me staying with the cheap set up I currently have. Granted I am no longer a professional mechanic, but still do a fair amount of projects at home. Had a former coworker get that same box off the snap on truck and while it is cool, it was not (to me anyway) the $6000 cool that he paid for it.

Don't do that. The slides come lubricated with a light grease, dry graphite lube isn't going to mix well with it and will likely cause them to stick and bind.

Snap-On tools are awesome. I've not rounded a rusty fastener with my 3/8ths flank-drive xtra sockets after a few months of owning them, for example. And the screwdrivers manage to undo rusty screwheads that none of my other ones could even dream about removing. The difference between these tools is probably in the neighbourhood of £60-£80. On the other hand, my tool box cost me £250 brand new, it's a PowerFix tool box from Aldi. Imagine Walmart, but for abused items or items so cheap that not even Walmart is willing to put their name to it. This box has served me flawlessly for the two and a half years I've owned it, soft close, locks perfectly, no noises from the drawers. I could have saved for a Snap-On box for £6k for a similar sized one. But, that price-to-performance is skewed for a toolbox. I can't see myself owning a Snap-On toolbox until I own every other one of my tools from Snap-On, and not until I'm not going to be scraping money together to buy Snap-On tools. It took me a month to save up for a set of deep and shallow FDX 3/8ths sockets. Do I regret it? Not one bit. How long will it take me to save up for a tool box, which won't help me speed up my tasks, which won't improve my quality of work, which won't see any realistically £5k difference in build quality? Too long, to the point I don't care about Snap-On toolboxes.

Bought my snap on box 23 years ago one of the org KRL models. Love it to this day. Not one issue. Looks almost brand new with some minor battle wounds. I wanted to by another box but I agree with you a hundred percent the squeaky draws ruin it for me.

Worked out of a cheap Craftsman tool box for years. Cheap box filled with snap on and Mac and yes, some Craftsman tools too. About 10 years into my mechanic career, I found a slightly used Snap on Rick Mears limited edition set of tool boxes. Top, middle, bottom, side cabinet and side shelf. I am now over 40 years into auto / diesel truck mechanic trade and still using my worn out snap on box. And yep, the slides always sucked and were noisy and would stick. No lube seemed to work. Anyway, I swear by snap on tools as they hold up the best imo....

I started off almost 10 years ago with a 28 inch top and bottom from snap on, got in on finance, which was probably crazy at the time but I loved it. 2 years ago i traded it for a 40 inch top and bottom "guy martin special", for a few reasons; i needed more space, i REALLY liked the look of new box, but mainly, I got a really good trade in price for my old box. I'm a dealer tech so I wheel the box all over the shop, but I just love it. I take such pride in it and it's the coolest box in the shop. They're dear yes and to an extent you pay for the name, but for me, it's my dream tool box and a purchase I definitely don't regret.

I understand your point of view, but that being said. I love my snap-on epiq toolbox. I also bought it used. I like the drawer layout and also how easy the box rolls. I haven't had the same problem with the drawer slides. Would I pay full price? No, but I'd buy nice used one again in a heartbeat.

I just got myself a decent size Husky box on Black Friday for $1000 delivered after working for about 6 years out of a 5 drawer Craftsman box (which is still great) and a US General cart. I made those boxes overflow as I kept acquiring more and better tools. I got my new box and I can breathe now. I can find things easily, and my snack drawer has never been more spacious! It's really made my job easier, the soft close drawers are wonderful, and I like the matte paint and subdued look. Also, I have that same 1/2 inch drive Ingersoll W7152 and I love it.

@@xsietube well if you look into it, you would know it's not the jacks, it's the jack stands. I have the same yellow super duty jack for 4 years, & I lift full size trucks with it too. The recall you're talking about has to do with the jack stands only.

I bought a 41” craftsman box, top and bottom 3 years ago for $1000 worked out of it everyday for 3 years and still am as a heavy diesel mechanic, it has soft close drawers and a power strip, and has been incredibly reliable, drawers still close super nice, locks still work, drawers don’t squeak, holds lots and lots of tools, and I am really happy with it.

Grew up in my Grandpa’s shop with Snap On everything. When I got my own tools I went with Craftsman because I couldn’t afford Snap On. I also watched my Dad pay the tool man weekly and even a few times found myself paying a lot for small simple tools I needed right then. I have some Snap On because a lot of their stuff is great. I have the Husky Industrial box that was $998 and is awesome and a US General 5 drawer cart that I love. Do I want a snap on box? Hell yes! Will I get one? Maybe one day when I find a smoking deal. I took the money saved and put a lift in my shop at home. I still chase the truck for a few things and that logo brings back great memories of my Grandpa. Your review is 100% on.

I have tons of tools and have to reach in and swear to grab stuff from the back of the drawer, but I have the gentle close, they came with mats, they look after my tools and they were a TENTH of the price of a Snap-on box. Which means, of course, MORE TOOLS FOR ME! :)

Short answer no Long answer hell no what are you insane 2 years ago, I bought my 2015 Chevy Cruze stick shift with 54k miles in tip top condition rust free and paid $10,000 flat. 84" Snap-On Epiq toolbox with just a plain stainless steel top: $17,000 Oh but he'll give me $5,000 trade in for my Cornwell and then you get a discount when you finance through Snap-On so I would pay $10,541 or right in there. I'm not paying more for a toolbox than a fucking car. You can't even get it in a single bay. They sell you this double and triple bank shit and all it does it take away storage space. MATCO's new boxes are worse. Excessive bulk without added storage room. MAC toolboxes are junk. You can just tell by looking at the pictures and then every tech I've ever talked to that had one eventually regretted buying it. Cornwell boxes are cheap but, they're not much better than MAC. I only own one because I got a hell of a deal on it at the pawn shop Also, I remember when you bought this and everybody was in the comments telling you to sell it and buy a Harbor Freight 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Also, who the hell pays full retail on the tool trucks? I mean unless you're buying one item, you can always get a deal Take the flyer from MAC, and ask MATCO to beat his price. Then, ask Cornhole to beat MATCO's price. I think you missed my point. As I said in the video, this purchase was a 'gift to myself' after 20+ years working as a mechanic. It was something I aspired to, having a ' big brand name' box. It was also desperately needed if you check the video in the description about my $400 box overflowing. If you watch the videos linked in the description you'll see that I didn't set out to buy a Snap-on box, but ended up with this one because it was in my view, a great deal at $6700. Remember it was also delivered to my shop so I didn't have the extra expense of a tow truck to transport it. Something I would have had to consider with an HF or Husky box of the same size. You can get all, "I told you so", or you can see the video for what it is, my opinion, and my experience with this particular tool box. It's also information to be considered if someone is thinking of dropping big money on one of these boxes. I share my 'mistakes and experiences' so that others can possibly learn from them. I'm still happy I bought the box. The feeling I get when I walk into the shop and see it is still a good one. I believe it will also outlast your Cruz. My grandson may very well be working out of it someday. Remember, tool boxes, and the tools within them, make money, unlike a vehicle which costs money over time. You have to consider context with a purchase like this. Thank you for your input.

I have Snap-On box similar to yours, but one size smaller. If I were buying a box today, I'd probably go with a Harbor Freight one. But, in 2005 when I was working as a tech at a Mazda dealership, I drove a car into my box and sent it and another box into another bay. I didn't lose any drawers and the paint wasn't damaged, but the car had to go to the body shop.

Snap-on in our days is overrated IMO. Very similar to Apple today, it's all about the name, not the quality or the function. The problem is that the people who buy brands like this will never admit they are wrong, and will continue buying them, just not to admit they are wrong. Husky, Gear wrench and wven the nicer HF tools are really as good if not better, for a fraction of the price. Thanks for a great brave video exposing the truth behind some stupidity expensive brands!

I've got a Snap On tool box that now sits in my garage at home. Bought the box some 35 + years ago when I was younger working at a stereo shop. Problem that has developed with it over the years now is that it takes some strength to open and close the doors. They don't slide that well at all anymore.

Eric, I've got a KRL1033 that I pick up off the truck brand new with minor cosmetic damage on the side for half price. In my years on the Snap-on truck I've only seen one other deal like this and it went fast. I bought the box before I even saw it or knew what color it was, turn out to be a nice color, candy apple red. As far as husky or some other box store brand being as good. I think not. I've yet to find a nother comparable box that will hold 5,000 pounds. My drawer slides don't squeak ether, follow up with Snap-on. They will send you new slides, it's a pain to install them buy you will be glad you did.

I think you're right about buying a name but you also have to factor in financing. Financing sells to people who aren't great with money. It's exploitive but legal. The name has value because admitting you got taken by the truck is a hard pull to swallow. (Although as you said, you do like their wrenches so they may have some products that are a better deal than others and there's a warrantee to factor in). My brother thinks he's a mechanic, he works in a golf cart shop and lives with my parents. Of course he made his way into the truck and found himself a tool box. He keeps telling me it's for sale but I'm not a toolbox guy nor would I buy snap-on if I was in the market for one, I'd probably go for harbor freight or husky. I'm a peg board and shelf type of guy.

Eric, I bought 3 tool boxes from FaceBook market for $50 each. Used but great condition. By the time I lined them I have a huge set of 8 foot x 4 foot wall of tool boxes. Got all shapes and drawers, but all are Craftsman from Sears. Totally happy. Now, they are a bit noisy, yes. They are a bit sticky on the drawers, check. But for $150 can’t complain for a DIY guy at home.

@@ETCG1 where's the valve in a cheap HF box that you have to replace every 5 years when it's worn out, and has no warranty? Talking US General, not the new ICON joke. Over the lifetime, the Snap-on box holds up for the lifetime of the purchaser. You'll have replaced the HF box enough times in the same span of time to have more money in the HF boxes than one Snap-on. If you have issue with the slides, call customer care, they will warranty them if you ask for them to be warrantied.

I have a Craftsman 75" double decker that I purchased for around $2000 back in the early 2000's. The similar Snap-On box went for $3500. When I asked Snap-On about the drastic difference in price, they only stated that their box was made of a thicker gage steel (don't remember he thickness). I don't know about you but I only use my tool box for storing tools not performing impact tests or dropping it off a loading dock. Definitely paying for the name!

I work out of a 48 in husky with a wood top,little power strip, one 48 in semi deep drawer and the rest are split side by side.i keep metric one side and sae the other added a pegboard for my common use tools. Work fine for 400 bucks
