Can You Really Compare Harbor Freight To Snap-On? (Yes)

I recently spent far too much money on a tool box that is less spectacular than I was hoping. It got me wondering: Is Harbor Freight far off when they compare their US General tool box with the Snap-on?
Perhaps less so than you might think.
Lots of people asking about the nightstand tool box. I can’t find it in black, but here it is in red: amzn.to/2YEmFu9
Here’s the wood top: amzn.to/3oO60ih
Similar (and cheaper) box in black: amzn.to/2YyGGCw
I may get a commission if you use the above links

If I opened a box from Snap On and found loose rails, rubbing surfaces and the other things you pointed out it would immediately be returned. You don’t pay that much money for that low level of quality.

The reason I bought my Snap On box was primarily size. The thing is a monster and I had tools to fill it. I also got some rather insane deals on trades, so it didn't cost a ton. If I were starting out I wouldn't hesitate to get a US General or a Husky box. I'm seriously considering getting a Husky roll cart for work and a box for home kinda like Matt uses his for end tables.

I opted for the craftsman instead of the harbor freight solely on the shipping. I didnt have a truck (and didnt want to rent a uhaul) to get the box from harbor freight to my house. Lowes (where I bought my craftsman) could let me ship it directly to my apartment. However, the badge for the craftsman was all rubbed off because they laid the face against the pallet. And I had to cut my own inserts for the drawers, which was like an extra $50 for the two rolls

@@thepopeofkeke It doesn't really matter how excited you are, both will get the job done and save you the money of purchasing it yourself. I get it, older snap on is heirloom quality stuff, and I'd be super hyped if I got a big box too. But lets be real here, most children won't get a toolbox at all. Its not so much that its nice Harbor Freight didn't exist, it just wasn't so ridiculously expensive to manufacture in the United States years ago, so Snap On had no excuse to charge premiums like they do now. They had a lot more competition.

I weigh about 240 lbs and that lower drawer didn't flex any and seemed to handle that test well. I then examined what they had there on display and found those US General tool boxes to be well made when considering the cost. I have no problem with them nor do I with the Husky brand Home Depot is partnered with. I have a Snap-on upper and lower rolling tool box from the 1980's for $1,900 back then. I wouldn't spend that money for a Snap-on today mainly because todays competitive tool boxes are much better made and carry much more value than they did years ago.

They are called "Eraser Wheels" and they work great on double sided tape, stickers, and pin striping. Anything "stuck" onto a durable surface, really. Get the bulk off with the wheel and clean the adhesive off with IPA or break cleaner. The only thing to know is to not dwell in one spot too long, you can overheat and damage the finish. Keep the rotation speed low and keep it moving. The 3M ones strike a nice balance between longevity and not damaging the paint. The softer it is the less likely you'll damage the paint, but the faster it will wear. (And the soft ones leave behind a lot more mess)

I'm 69 and a Class A Gas & Diesel mechanic with too many year of experience using tool boxes daily. I've had Craftsmen, Cornwell, Mac, Snap-On and an old Delco Shock Display box I repainted and used for years for pretty much just air and electrical tool storage. Of all the boxes, the most immediate feature I felt I wanted was the feel. As I would be opening and closing the box hundreds of times a week, I wanted a handle and slide mechanism that I could become acquainted with in more or less the same way one becomes married to the feeling I'd get driving a well constructed race car. Something that intuitively I could just use without having to think about it and was secure in the knowledge that it was doing the job it was intended to do. The Cornwell was my favorite. Best slides, heavier sheet metal and actual comfortable chrome, no sharp edges anywhere handles that were screwed onto each of the drawers. My next favorite would have been the Mac's. 3rd would have been the Snap-Ons. Just the feel made the biggest difference. Next the ease of removing the drawers... Snap-On's method sucked compared to the others. I found the Craftsmen boxes pretty good too but their bottoms always seemed to cave when they were overloaded... I know, my fault, but when you're using them for work they tend to get overloaded.... so I just went ahead and added a piece of 1/8" diamond plate to the bottoms under the wheels... and put on bigger wheels while I was at it. Problem cheaply solved. Of course my days were many years ago and the new boxes just weren't around then at all.

The tool truck branded boxes were incredible 20 years ago, but it feels like their quality has crept downward as their price has crept upwards over the years. I bought the US General 44” top and bottom for daily use in a municipal garage after getting an obscene quote from Snap-On for similar boxes. I spent $700 instead of $7000, and I don’t see any drop-off in quality that would justify that difference. Definitely better than 80% of the quality for less than 20% of the price.

Bit older harbor freight still seems to be excellent bang for the buck, my current “garage “ (for the last 7yrs) is actually a covered patio and my roller box and service cart still show no signs of falling apart, they previously lived in a diesel truck shop. Matt, love your content, editing style, sense of humor, etc and of course all the cool stuff you build. Just watched the vid where you took the jag out to see how far a charge would last.... I was literally LoL'ing when you were one driveway away from home, entertaining and also very relatable. A solution for the adhesive left over from the giant crappy exTreme logo and all things sticky that still stick even though you want them to not stick. I have used two 32oz bottles of this stuff and have another 32oz under the sink for future sticky things. Unlike most other products it doesn't attack the adhesive it breaks the bond the adhesive has on the substrate. It's not a miracle cure and still requires elbow grease, I found the best technique was several rounds of spray, let soak for 30-60sec, rub with 3M scrubby pad and/or razor blade. I tackled 20yr old weather stripping, tar based seal tape and it's one of the few products that actually deals with silicone and it's residue. I'd imagine with all the other projects the leftover toolbox goop is probably out of site out of mind, but if you wanna go back and kick it's butt, this is a great solution. getremov.com

I've had a 44" US General box for about eight years now. Half of that time it was used daily at a truck salvage. I have to say that I'm impressed with how well it's held up. I also own an extremely old Snap-on box and some older Craftsman boxes. All I can say is the US General box has had zero issues and is way better built than the Craftsman boxes. Only time will tell if it'll last as long as the Snap-on box.

To everyone complaining about the cost of snap-on, it is made in the USA, in a union shop, they have to be paid union wages, not like some countries that pay their employees $1 a day, if you work with it everyday, it is apparent the difference, if you’re just using them at home, HF will be your friend. I don’t know who pays “retail” for this stuff, maybe if it’s a truck account, but if you’re a cash buyer, 40-50% off all the time, every time. But a lot will depend on your dealer, he actually does have to make money to pay his bills too. My dealer hooked me up on a epiq box, power top, hutch and 3 power lockers, money talks, bull$hit runs a marathon.

There is always the 5th or 6th option...buying a way better toolbox than you could normally afford because you go it used. This works out best for shopping right after Christmas and Fathers Day...lots of folks get a dad a fancy new tool box and the home garage is only so big. Proto and Husky seem to be most common for this but for estate sales it seem that Cornwell must have been popular in the 80's as those seem to be what the rural estate sales always have.

Harbor Freight offers several different lines of boxes and they are changing them constantly, also the pricing changes and even the names. I got a US General box last year and it's the best one I have. If you go by rated weight that's not a bad criteria. Go to the store when it's not busy and see if you can find the store manager, tell him you're looking at buying or ordering an $800 tool box and ask for his help, he can tell you what the best coupons deals are and give you some guidance. The store manager knows what tools come back...and they get a lot of returns at Harbor Freight.

The US General 44" box and its chest and side boxes have been pretty consistent over the years. The newest offering, Series 2, appears to be a response to the tariffs placed on China. If I understand correctly, the tariffs would have increased the price of the outgoing boxes some 20%. The tariffs specified "home use boxes" under some magic number, however, so the newer boxes are deeper. I think 22" vs 18" deep previously. In the end the Series 2 is still more expensive than the previous model, but they're all around better, too.

This is the bottom series that snap on makes and it’s made in the USA. But I would also have it returned or warranted. My first snap on box was a 60 inch heritage series, it was received with the rear corners damaged. Snap on gave me $500 truck credit and I gently straighten the corners to almost no visible damage. At the time it was a 20% of the box cost. Used it for 10 years and traded it in and got $1500 for it for a deeply discounted Master series box. They really are great boxes and I like knowing it helps keeping other Americans employed so they can buy other peoples goods and services and keep me employed.

As a certified technician myself, who works on cars every day, I can tell you while Snap on and Matco are definitely pricy, you get what you pay for. With that said, yeah, brand names will mark it up just because of the name, but quality is 100% better than competition. My box is Matco. All my drawers get opened up dozens of times a day. Can honestly say I’ve never greased my tracks every month like the owners manual to my box says, and in the 3 years I’ve had it, I’ve never had an issue with them latching or sliding closed. Most of my wrenches and sockets are snappy and matco and a few Cornwell too. They grab better, look better, way less likely to crack/strip a bolt, etc. Ratchets and hammers…snappy. Way better hardened steel than cheap Pittsburgh or even Icon. Craftsman is ok for at home use. But eventually those stripped or cracked, or the chrome faded. Never has happened with my snap on stuff. The price sucks, but it beats having to warranty something a dozen times “because I won’t spend money on good tools”.
@dirediredude

This video is about boxes though. As a former technician I agree snap on matco etc are the way to go for sockets and hand tools. Just about everything else is a massive waste of money though. Unless you're doing running flying sidekicks to close your drawers every time just about any of these tool boxes would handle daily abuse from a professional. They're like he said, the nuclear option. Maybe if you're buying to pass down to your kids that'd be cool but don't kid yourself thinking they're worth the extra doe.

I started out with a US General toolbox at the dealership I work at. Paid around $700 for the top and bottom box and a year or so later my Matco dealer offered me $1,000 tool credit to trade in on their toolbox. I ended up with a 4s triple bay with hutch at around $7,000 (would have been more like $10,000 but the hutch was a free promo with purchase of the bottom). Is the Matco box better and more premium than the HF box? Yes. Is it 10 times better to justify the price? No.

They're noisy, the locking mechanism is cheap and not placed well and my god things rattle off the top of my box while rolling through the shop. I sold a couple of used HF boxes for around half price, maybe $200 each, when I upgraded to their new series 2. I think there's some truth in that most hand tools don't have any real resale value (no one is going to pay anything remotely close to full price for used HF wrenches, for example). On the other hand, the money saved on the box can be invested in better tools, or any other investment vessel, and is likely to return better than any "resale" of decades old Snappy stuff. There's a time and a place for "good enough" and "best." A fair assessment of one's own needs will guide most to the HF box, IMO. Few "need" much more than that. Before I ramble too long, there's also financial limits. In my case, one good set of wrenches was less useful than a much larger selection of "good enough" tools. If you're starting out and only have $1000 to spend, spend it on enough tools to do the most jobs. More jobs, more money, better tools later (if needed).

I absolutely love my Snap-On toolbox, that said, I bought it used and haggled the price down because I knew the rep wanted to get rid of it ASAP. Being a tech, the majority of my love of Snap-On comes from my hatred of going places and typically disliking people. I want to put hands on a tool before I purchase it, so most of online is out and when borrowing tools within a shop, most of the things passed around are Snap-On or Matco. I learned the hard way that trying a Snap-On tool and then buying the comparable Mac tool just leads to disappointment. So between Home Depot, Harbour Freight, etc. and Snap-On, with Snap-On, I only have to deal with the single rep, and he comes to me consistently. It is an expensive way to go about life, but I also very rarely have tools break.

When I ran custom car install shops back in the '80s I bought a used Snap-On 6 foot tall roller cabinet and top box combo from a Snap-On dealer in excellent condition for $700 (new they were about $2,500 at the time). I also got a used Snap-On side box similar to the ones in this video for $100. While I agree that they probably aren't worth the price when purchased new, buying used can make them a much better value. People trade in boxes all the time to buy newer, bigger ones, check with dealers and you can usually find a good box at a great price. Over 40 years later I still have them and use them daily.

With them hiring the Mercedes engineer I'd in fact love to hear you break down a Kia Forte GT vs a Mercedes, dollar to dollar. Edit: You don't have a heatgun in one of those tool boxes to take the black goop off with?

For the badge goo, try a Pinstripe removal wheel (also called an eraser wheel). They chuck in your drill and are great for removing stuff like this. I've been using them to remove a very old and very badly applied plastidip paint job from my '56 Oldsmobile and they are the only thing that works. They will get off in one pass what chemicals & pressure washer combined won't budge. Use it on your drills lowest setting though, you want to peel the residue off, not melt it.

Armature DIY-er here, I bought the 5 drawer US general cart from Harbor Freight, it’s decent. The lock is very cheap (it broke during assembly) just replaced it with a lock from Home Depot. Besides that, no complaints here

The thing that shocked me the most is that these tool carts cost this much money. They seem like a pretty simple item.

@@MarkFunderburk I wouldn't have to buy it. Do you know how much metal is just tossed out by the dumpster. That's a good point though, I could probably make a tool box for free

How I ended up with a large Snap-On tool box: They had one on their truck that normally costs $5,000 but this particular one was scratch & dent *and* once a year they have a toolbox sale drive. The two discounts combined meant that box cost me just over $2,000. Fast forward 4 or 5 years, one of their dealers had a used 72 inch 3 bay box. Normally it's a $12,000 model, used (but looking brand new) he wanted $8,000. For the fun of it I asked him what he would give me in trade for the smaller box I had, he basically offered me $5,000 for the box. So I got a $12,000 box for $3,000. If I had to purchase that same type of box without a trade in? I would go to Home Depot and get a Husky box. It wouldn't be as tall or deep, but would still cost about half what I actually paid for my box and nowhere near the 12 grand Snap-On would cost.

I’ve got a Mac tools double bottom and top box and it’s absolutely solid and has no little problem like the snap on box at all. I had a Mac tools trolly box aswell before and I absolutely loved that thing, was gutted to sell it but I need the money for tools for my bigger box.

I remember when you could get a new 1/8" drill bit if you broke yours. Your independent salesman might take the loss and do it but snap on wont.

You're right, tool boxes with their different drawer sizes are just the best way to store things and easily access them as well. I'm currently building my own desk and looking at tool boxes for a drawer system.

I use tools all day everyday and have for years. I think you would know more about toolboxes than me. No need to be humble, you've got toolboxes up to your ears. You're a toolbox aficionado if I've ever seen one.

These USG toolboxes from HF are surprisingly well made. While I don't use as a professional, I do use them most everyday. I have several different sizes. They have one that is an open bin at the bottom and lift top that is one of my favorites and it held up well traveling a lot of times to the track. These all have HD wheels, the door slides operate pretty smoothly, and the drawers hold a lot of weight. Some of the snobs will grimace as they must have Snap-On, but you can put a lot of tools in the boxes with the money you saved. I bought a Craftsman Professional toolbox about 20 years ago (when they actually had some nice tools) for about $2300 that is the size of a refrigerator. HF didn't exist then. These ARE NOT like the current crap lines of Craftsman boxes. These were made in USA and I think the toolbox weighed about 600 lbs empty. Last I looked, the best Craftsman box was pure junk I would not even consider. I think the USGs are about on par with the Craftsman Pros of that era at less than half the cost (but in today's dollars). I have four of the USGs now, five if you include two that are stacked. They are a very good value. One thing I have definitely noticed about the HF tools in terms of trends. While there is still some stuff that is use to do your one time job and throw away, they seem to keep improving where some of their stuff is starting to be very competitive. While some of the other brands seemingly keep lowering their quality, the Chinese HF stuff has been going the other way, meaning they have basically met in the middle. Keep your eyes peeled for sales and coupons, They do them enough that you can almost never pay their normal full price.

Worked in a large shop where you did not have a dedicated stall. One day you may be doing brakes and wheel seals on a fixed route bus,and the next pulling a trans on an E450. Basically your box went to where you were working. You could buy a roll cart, but I watched other techs walking back and forth all day getting this and that. What convinced me that I would stay with snap on is watching guys struggle to get their boxes locked after moving them,or the wheels fail and break in the centers, or the drawers bending due to the weight. Craftsman boxes, harbor freight, and kobalt are good tool boxes,if they are stationary. Didnt ever see a problem with them while sitting still. After about a year of moving them though, you can start to see the difference.
