I had a 92 XTZ750 (bought used in 2001) for 7 years. Long story short: It's impressive that I still love this bike so much despite its list of issues. Long story less short: Back in the day it was first released it was a game changer. It was such a great bike concept that made it one of the most unthinkable motorcycle crimes that YAMAHA didn't execute it well enough and (even worse) didn't even develope it at all, only to quit the competition for good years later. The only improvement this bike got over the years was a rectifier and a frame spacer that was missing (!!!) in pre 92 models causing cracks (mine was no exception). I'm impressed one can find the XTZ750 feeling "small" like in this video. The huge tank forcing your legs to spread as if you are under a gynecologic exam plus the very high COG offers quite the opposite feel. The windscreen was small indeed but back in the day it was almost OK. Another under engineered thing was the front wheel, a thing that could have just came out of a poor XT600 could never offer to its big brother what the latter needed handling wise though off road this wasn't much of an issue (if not welcome). In theory the huge ground clearance and the suspension travel were very promising for off tarmac use but in practice the bike required some short of Peterhansel out of you to reach its potentials with the bike being so top heavy. It was a joy though to go fast on flat terrains, something that even an amateur could achieve. Speaking of fast, as much as its suspension and weight distribution put a pretty low limit on what you could do, the engine was a real diamond leading the competition. YAMAHA was very smart to cut a Genesis engine in half and equip the XT750 with such a competent heart but even this wasn't trouble free. The most common failure was the carbs. They really loved to flood the engine. Mine had a broken clutch basket (though I never replaced it), others had a variety of issues. As I said before, mine developed a crack in the frame - no difference before/after welding. It came out of the factory too soft for tarmac use. Some guys had reinforced theirs. YAMAHA liked to do that back in the day, lots of HP power on soft frames (VMAX for example). That said, I still had good times on it and not only due to its sexy looks and the attractive cockpit even by today's standards. Just imagine what this bike could be if YAMAHA had done even an elementary attempt to address its issues. When mine was well worn I found a crashed TDM 900. Had I enough space I would have kept it and made a great bike out of the two as I had done at the end of 90s combining two XTZ 600 (the first and the last one) plus various spares. Even by today's standards the ancient XTZ750 feels like it could still do wonders with some injection, a set of brakes and a stiffer frame. Actually a Greek guy did this extra mile by adding injection and turbo claiming that this thing made 100ps @ 0.5 bar and 135 @ 1.0 bar. Fisherman's tails? Maybe it is not best best bike ever, but it is so much reliable!!! That’s fantastic! When I was 18 I used to dream with the XTZ750. In 2010 I've bought a 1991 Super Tenere. Ten years together before buying a T7 in 2020. Super happy with both bikes! I agree 100% with your comments in this amazing video! Thank you. Good Job!

Awesome video as usual! Thanks! Xtz750 and T700 are two of the best adventure bike of its eras. My first adventure bike over 20 years ago was a 1989 Xtz750, blue white yellow paint with black rims. It took me all over Europe and Africa. After growing up watching Paris-Dakar the choice was easy! The Super Tenere is a very comfortable but primitive bike with soft suspension. The engine is powerful but needs high revs to perform. At one point was it my only bike and I used it for everything from commuting to single track. I thought it was a great off road bike then, I guess I didn’t know better! It’s a heavy bike, especially with overloaded aluminum panniers. I spent a lot of time pinned under the bike on my African trip. Good memories…

As a T7 owner and a fairly new rider these vids are a great window into the timeline of motorbikes, a history that directly feeds into what we ride today. It really helps put the current bike line up into perspective.

2:00 "I wonder if people thought it looked good in 1990?" I'm old and I remember when these came out. I thought they just looked heavy. I'd ridden the first Tenere, the one that was a TT600 enduro bike that had a 36 litre tank grafted on. Full enduro suspension, but with a big seat and big tank. In the first minute of riding I realised that I'd got myself in a terrible spot. The little single track I'd chosen by the side of the road got narrow, the road dropped away in a cutting, there was nowhere to put a foot down, with near vertical wall on one side, and a 6 m drop on the other. The track just ended at the edge of a 6 m cliff. So I pulled it into a small wheelie and jumped it off the cutting, 6m down to the flat road. It didn't even bottom out the suspension. Like jumping off the roof of a house onto the driveway. Completely unfamiliar with the bike, but it was just so natural, capable and forgiving. Every adventure bike after that (maybe the KTM 640 ADV excepted) has just been a huge disappointment after that stellar bike. I rode it 1000 km as a *pillion* and got off in good shape. The rider was overtaking cars on the verge, (not grass, I mean Australian bush, dodging trees) two up, with gear at 120 km/h and it felt perfectly sensible. It was that good.

I currently own my 3rd Super Ten. Back in 1990 when I owned my first one I was very lucky to get a place on a Yamaha Europe organised owners trip to Mexico when the Baja 1000 desert race was on. Great comparison and commentary. I still have my 'retired' relic 1991 XTZ750, white with red,silver,blue. It's probably one of only a dozen or so floating around in Canada. It never sold well here, as it was just so overpriced back in fall '90, for a newish adventure category ($8500 Cdn for XTZ, vs $9000 Cdn for an FJ1200.) Always loved the look, and could take it most places the KLRs would play, but with much more rider comfort to get there! Although there is a huge technical update with the T7, the general travel, proportions, clearances, and versatility, have all been extrapolations based on this rugged trail barge. Bet the old sump pump seals needed attention for the old girl in your video...otherwise, I understand they could often hit 100k miles. Thanks again Brake Magazine!

Great video! My very first bike (bought less than a year ago) is one of the few here in Canada - a 1989 Super Tenere! I absolutely adore the old thing. It has a strong European vibe and reminds me of my old Land Rovers I used to have. I admit in my day to day I ride my VFR a bit more, but I will always love the Tenere! If you have one in North America be prepared to be stopped everywhere you go. They’re so rare that every motorcyclist is gonna want to talk to you about it!

Great video! I own a XTZ-750 and it surprises me every time I ride it how capable it is. The engine is smooth and it really comes alive in the high revs. I have bar risers on my bike and it makes standing more comfortable. The only issue I have standing up on my bike is the HUGE gas tank.

I drive an original Africa Twin from 1989, the RD03. I come from much faster bikes, but really love just bumbling along the country-side, actually seeing things because I have the time to look around and take it all in. On my old bikes, I was always driving fast, could not help myself. And if you asked me, after a trip, what did I see? I'd say "nothing, because I was too busy not dying". I'm glad I made the switch to this vintage, indestructible, analog, simple, no frills Africa Twin. These old bikes: be it old GS'ses,. Teneré's, Africa Twins and so on, are fantastic. You don't feel like you "need" to go fast. The bike does not "invite you". You just don't care about that sort of thing when you drive around on them.

Love these "Retro vs Modern" series. You did the Yamaha Tenere, the Honda Africa Twin, and the KTM adventure.... but there's an ELEFANT in the room (pun intended and all)! Here's a propper challenge --- do the Cagiva Elefant 750/900 versus the Ducati Desert-X! 😉

Love this series! The Super Ten was defintely a looker, but maybe the real performer of this time was Honda's XRV650 Africa Twin (later 750s might also apply)? I feel like the Super Ten on your video needs a comeback to set its record straight, and putting these two contemporary icons together in a comparison, with your knowledge, experience and overall awesome content would be a terrific video. Hope you guys go for it!

Over the years I had 3 of the xtz750 loved them all, they were my intro to off road bikes for the road. Despite having many other makes and models between owning the xtz's, I've actually ended up owning 2 xt1200z's which are the nearest practical for me version of the 750. The 750's will be iconic for sure, as will the other 750 dakar style bikes of that era.

This is just a FANtastic report! Love it to the bone. I specifically bought my beloved XT-1200es 2019 for… REELS: Reliability, Easiness, Exploration, Landscape and Scenery. Oh man does Yamaha fulfill my wildest dreams! The genetics of (Super)Téneré are massive.

Great video. Makes me sad that I just sold my 1988 DR750. It was a bike that just made me smile and put me in a good place. I modded the suspension to bring it up to date a bit and some other subtle mods to improve it for long distance riding. Just a great old dependable bike that would take me anywhere and always created interest wherever I went. These early Dakar replica bikes were before their time in the UK at least. Europe loved them from day one.

I love the look of the older Tenere. Keep us posted about the old girl.

I love these episodes. I like to describe the T7 as a dirt bike that "finally grew up", like that adult that seems mature but still goes out and gets slammed and passes out on your couch. They got a job and mean well, but can't help but get wild when they want. We all love that guy.

Thank you for that video guys I enjoyed it so much. I had a xtz750 for many years and it took me the length and breadth of Europe plus Morocco on many occasions. I modified the suspension and put a new raised seat on it to accommodate my my height. I also so did a lot of electrical improvements. I LOVED that bike. The only down side for me was the weight since I was doing some pretty extreme off-road riding. It is so nice to be reminded of it it and 4 younger riders to know about it. I have observed over recent years the trend towards bigger and heavier and more powerful adventure bikes with some distress. I am so pleased to see see the arrival of the t7, which is definitely the bike I would be riding now if I had not got too old to ride anymore. Thanks for the memories. Ted Scott.

I think so far the T700 is the only modern bike that looks better than its retro version. Looking forward to the next one, and thankful the KLR isn't sold in Europe so you can't do a Retro vs Modern of that 😉

Great video and love the new/old comparisons. As a recent owner of a '93 xtz750 I can agree on the chuggy but chilled nature of the bike, though I feel you probably undersold it a touch. A référence to the Dakar Hall of fame would have been nice, or an explanation as to why they chose a 5valve design, but that's just nit picking. Thanks and keep it up!

I bought a ST750 1996 1 year ago 85k kms on it Last week i had the opportunity to se it go on 99.999 then to 00.000 :D Amazing engine still purrs like a kitten. i cant get enough of the sound really is so nice And boy if you give it the business its starts breathing you can hear the gearbox whining and the exhaust howling in such a nice way...... I was watching videos all day craving for it Since i bought it i only got more excited and satisfied with it Amazing video loving the series too!!!

Great video as always. A couple of years ago, I was considering buying a used one and refurbishing it, but the legal restrictions on bikes with carbs here in Switzerland makes it not worth the effort. While I was doing my research on the bike I came across an article saying that the 5 valves per cylinder could be problematic if not the clearances weren't spot on. That might be the source of the knocking noise.

What a suprise! I happen to have an old XTZ750 needing a huge amount of love in a shed. I once had the XLV750 (the honda with shaft drive). I really like the reviews of the Tenere700. The review really sounds right, remembering back to my days of riding the heavy comfy bikes. The alternative at the time were the lighter farm bikes, XT's, honda XL's and suzuki Dr's. But as viby single cylinders they were horrible to ride long distances on (I did...). I think the new 700 takes from the nimble singles, the power band of the twin and adds modern design and materials to make a great less comprimising package. But I still can't wait to fix my old girl and take her for a relaxed amble.. ;-) Thanks for the great video! Brought on some big smiles!

I don't have an XTZ750, but instaead a regular Ténéré XTZ660, and i completely can identify what you're saying with what i feel on it. It's such a surprising bike. I am kind of a newby in motorcycle world and this is my first motorcycle, but specially offroad, it's such a pleasure to ride, and i always think less of it, but everytime i pass over complicated terrain, in the end the feeling is that the limitation was myself. It simply is an incredibly capable bike. And i completely agree, those bikes, you can get much more riding them seated, than by standing on it. It is really easy going. The problem with mine, is cruising in highway. It simply is not made for it, going up the revs, and there is where this bikes start to swallow oil... Pay attention to it and you'll be fine. Maybe the 750 is more capable in highway (that engine really pullsat medium and high revs) maintaining a decent cruising speed, but it also has a reputation for oil consumption. Also i feel that the 660 is much more bullet proof, than the 750. And the engine pulls right from the bottom (shakes like hell, but it simply goes) making it great in offroad. And here, by what i read from their users, the 750 is not so friendly at low revs. Somehow i wonder what would be like with the XT660Z, with fuel injection and some refinements. That probably should be a great ride. Anyway, my XTZ660 is simply great. The limitation is simply when you need to put a big connection through highway. Is just boring, with all the vibrations. Every other things, i simply love it. Oh, and the gearbox.... Beside lacking a 6th gear, that pedal is simply crazy. With time, i understood how to work with it: simply don't spoil it. It likes it rough, as really rough it is lol

the trx850 motor and the wr450 usd's up front have made for an amazing bike, for me. being top heavy is the only complaint regarding my '93

Very nice comparison! I used to have a Super Tenere 750 and I had a lot of fun with it. A bit top heavy and the engine can surprise you, but let's call that character. When the clutch broke down it was the end for my Super Ten and I went for the single cylinder XT660Z, also a great bike with at least one major improvement: the brakes. They left me wondering if the Super Ten had any! Is the Super Tenere 750 a big bike? I always thought it was until I had the chance to sit on an original Dakar rally Super Tenere at Yamaha France, quite a bit bigger than the commercial version and even more suitable for my height. Today I have a T7 and I would say this is the real new Super Tenere. More perfection, less character?

I still have the 750 from 1990, changed the engine in still running condition at 120tkm, to a TDM850 engine with 80tkm, now I have 155tkm on the bike, crossed france, then montenegro, romania, ukrain, Transnistria,... at 100tkm the spark coil was dead. No issues, no doubt, start to china and you will be sure to come back... Bulletproof machine... The engine you can not kill, the knocking can be the clutchbasket, this is the only part i know what could fail in knocking if all other things have been respected in maintanance.... I have an XTZ 750 Super tenere for a few years now. It's my first bike and I would say it is a great beginner bike despite it's being a big displacement motorcycle. What I noticed, it is very forgiving and predictable off road. However I would not dare to go into "hard enduro type" of off road, as lifting 226kg + extras our of the swamp would not be possible if you are alone. On the tarmac it's quite nice and comfy. Lacking a bit of power if you want to floor it from corner to corner. Also cruising speed is quite low, approx. 100 kph. Faster than that and you have a bit of vibration. Changing gearing might fix that. It also feels like fifth gear is more like 4,5 gear, could be slightly longer. Stock exhaust does not produce a lot of noise, faster than 60kph and you cannot hear the engine over the wind. And you won't attract women's attention with that exhaust note :'). Alternator does not produce a lot of power, so think about it, when adding heated grips, phone charger, auxiliary lights etc. Oh and it's carbureted, so yeah, you need to check that from time to time, also frequent oil level checks are required for known lubrication problems. Changing oil is a bit of pain in the ass as well as other maintenances. But overall great bike, cheap to run, fun to ride.

Super video and I was really looking forward to this one! You could also add that the brakes of the Super Ten are 20+ years old and not the best. You kinda have to get used to them after riding newer bikes. Regarding the engine, yes, you kinda have to use the top end but only if you want to get all the power out. To go from point A to B around town, you never have to rev it about 4-5k. Once you go past 5k, it pulls! Keep these coming! Cheers from Portugal

I was keen on buying a Super Tenere 750 back in 1991 when I lived in Tokyo but ended up with a new Honda Africa Twin 750 RD04. Good choice, I think. The Super Tenere was a bit flat low-down. I thought the Super Tenere looked good in 1990. Gorgeous, in fact. The T7 is top-heavy. The attachment point of the exhaust is vulnerable and is not independent of the frame. In a fall the exhaust can easily hit the swingarm. Those two related points have put me off buying a T7. The top-heavy nature I could just about put up with as I am 6'0'' and 87 kg.

Great video thanks for the work you all put into these for our enjoyment. The Super Ten looks great, far prettier than my S10! It dose seem like you have missed an aspect of the S10 as mine is slightly manic above 4500 rpm. On damp roads with e07 tyres it often spins up in third at 50 mph. Have to say though the gearbox feels like the product Cold War espionage, stolen from a soviet era tractor!

You're more than welcome to come to Ireland and take mine out! Mine's a 95 with about 50k miles on the clock. Get's ridden in all weathers and conditions - from hard off road green laning to road touring (I actually have spare wheels with Karoo Extremes on for the off roading shenanigans!), and never skips a beat. I have 7 bikes, and SuperTed is by far the least valuable..... but is the one I ride more than all the others put together!!

On a ride with mates I briefly swapped my xr250r a Super Tenere 750 years ago. I still remember how wide it was on the feet, how poor I found the brakes and how the only way I could make it steer was with the throttle. Even though the suspension was super hard on that bike and it did not actually work, still gave the feelling I could bounce around the terrain fine, at least when attaking straight. Felt much heavier than e.g. a gs 1200. On the other hand the performance of the engine on high revs it was surprising (maybe comparable to a V-Strom 650), much faster compared to the 750 africa and on top of that also note that you can easily swap the 750 powerplant in the Super T. with one from a TDM 850.

I am almost done "restoring" my XTZ750, can't wait to take it out on trips.

6:40 I dont know if we'll ever look back at todays modern bikes and say they were classics or great bikes in the same way as we do today for bikes in the past like the ST750. There are more and more options out there in the market nowadays compared with in the past, they're more refined all-rounders, so much more tech (yes, even the T7 such as the engine management etc) that a broader market will consider them and increase sales. Have you ridden a fully modded KTM 950 Super Enduro? Once you lose the OEM shock, tweak the forks and do a few other things -- dome filter, lighter exhaust, carb re-jet, steering damper -- it's like nothing ever made. Brutal, amazing power, great trail handling, even in slow technical singletrack and steeps, and yet also bloody good fun to ride around the city, highway, country lanes and just chillin' on. I just sold mine with close to 90,000km on it, but have another one lined up for spring. I've been reviewing ADV bikes for almost 10 years and I've never ridden anything I loved as much as the SE. Would love to see you get your hands on one and make an amazing video about what it does to your pulse rate and belief systems.

Nice! waited for such a modern vs retro video! really cool! I own a Yamaha xtz 750 Supertenere but transformed it with Kayaba SSS forks, TFX rear shock, slimed tank for better offroad riding, TDM 850 4TX engine etc. Still heavier than those new T700, they are really great, but still the retro style remains and with some modification you will have a decent bike that will for sure take you around the world!

My brand new XTZ 750 was identical to that one , same colour , although a two into two stainless exhaust, and dynojetted , I used to hammer mine (with a mate on his) around the Peak District at far faster speeds than 50 before the mainstream went Adv ! 😎👌🏻Faster than the Africa twin, clumsy gearbox , great tourer…. Another friend rode his the full length of Africa, then back to the uk with his wife as pillion, long before the long way thingy… nice memories

A retro vs modern klr650 video would be interesting. Seems like the modern klr fits in better with the personality if these older adv bikes then the new breed. Would be interesting to see what has actually changed in its 30+ years as a model.

Yes, I have my XTz 19 years now. I will never sell it and I am sure it will outlast me. I also have other bikes like KTM 790s and 1050s and 1200 etc, which come and go, but no other bike I have owned has come close to my XTZ for joyful, riding experience, smooth, engine, and comfort

I have my 1991 ST For over 17 years and never missed a beat. I don’t know what You did to the test one but generally from most people they are bulletproof. I will never sell mine and I love driving it on country roads as it’s super smooth and comfortable not jerky with a hard seat like the new one

I had one of those . I worked as a courier around London on it for a few years and then shipped it to Greece. One morning I woke up and decided to sell it after riding it the night before drunk at nearly 90 mph down a village road with THREE people on all with no helmets.Good move , I’m still here 😁

My dad had a XTZ 750 SUPER TENERE it was the same as the one in the video but blue it was a amazing experience when i drove it in the forest i drove it every day actually i had to wait my turn to go riding but it was worth it every time overall great and powerfull peice of history

I have a 1990 and I love it, it fits me perfectly but I'm only 5'-8" so I don't feel cramped at all.

I own a 1990 XTZ 750 with the same color scheme as in the video, altho mine is nowhere close enough good condition as that :) Mechanically mine is very good, but plastics and paint is quite ruined and I have repainted some of the fairings. It is an awesome bike, even in 2023 :)

Can I ask that you do a comparison between the Cagiva Elefant 900 and the Ducati DesertX. I just got an old Elefant 900 and though it would be awesome to compare the DesertX to it's natural predecessor and highligt one of the really classic Dakar motorcycles.

I have 89 Super Tenere that I have had for 6 years now, it has 83000 km on it and no problems yet. I also have a 2002 Harley Road Glide that I have had for 2 years. The Harley is only in use when the wife wants to join 😂 Did you find out what the knocking noise was on the Super Tenere? Keep up the good work 👍

The Super Tenere is gorgeous 😍,, and obviously my 92 TDM 850 received a lot of those design aspects. Equally rare here in the States. Currently under the knife do to a tight valve 😫. Great plug for Yamaha, I would go the old, it is all about the Adventure, we are not in a race. All the modern power just makes it more dangerous than it needs to be. Slow and steady especially 45+ Adventure Riders and Adventure seekers

I had the xtz650 version mono cyl that I preferred. More compact and reliable in its engine and rest. But as now owner of 2 old AT I find the latter superiors. Now instead I would probably prefer the new Tenere. I don't like electronics on bikes, I prefer mechanically simple machines I can put my hands on and the new Tenere philosophy matches that. I also do not understand what a 1200cc bike is for, unless you have to commute daily 100km on a German motorway (notoriously without speed limits).

Much better comparison than the Tenere 700 vs Dakar 450. But a bit of a missed opportunity not getting the red and white Tenere 700.

Those old bikes review can often be based on a specific bike performance (as supposed to what that model can deliver). I own a 750 and something as small as dirty carbs can be the difference between a Labrador or a Kangal. I have to hang on after a good tuning, 5valve per cylinder and 70bhp, very road oriented and very quick bike, power delivery is sudden and not amazing at low rpm off rd

A mate bought an xtz750 in '90 and I remember it coming across as a budget bike compared to my xrv750 rd04. However the engine seemed perky enough though not exciting like the TDM. His frame gave in during a bit of off roading in Wales. I went on to drive through Afica and Central Asia without any problems. I still ride my Africa Twin today. Is the T7 that good?
