Is ADAS all hype? Does automatic emergency braking make cars safer?

While driving the updated Kia Sonet, ThePrint's Contributing editor and automotive journalist Kushan Mitra takes a look at the latest feature being rolled out by Indian carmakers onto more and more cars: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS. With features like Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), the ADAS also functions as 'Active Safety Systems'. But do such systems make cars safer? And are they a must for a good safety score? The failure of the Mahindra Scorpio-N to score even a single point in the Australasian NCAP (ANAP) test because it lacked AEB is a case in point.

Which year are we in? 2014? It could have been a question then but not now. ADAS is here to stay. Drive a ADAS L3 car and just feel how comfortable it is. I have develeoped cameras for German leading manufacturer and the level of testing is insane before a feature brought to the market. Do accidents still happen? yes! Are we better than the past? Hell yeah!

Nope accident deaths are at same level pr increased. Needless to say ADAS is useless and only a gimmick to make the consumer to pay more. It is especially useless in indian traffic.

First we need drivers with excellent driving skills, then lanes to drive along and finally ADAS to save our arses…

Good driving skills anyday better than these features.

ADAS can be effective in structured traffic and reasonably disciplined drivers that follow rules. ADAS would work on expressways. In the Indian city traffic, it is very questionable.

Using camera based ADAS enabled car from 2017 in US. it is a really useful feature especially in longer drives when driver loses concentration. It is not ensured to bring cars to a stop , but the response time of ADAS is much faster than the response of a normal human being mitigating the impact by a huge percentage. But it is not for those rash drivers where it can be counterproductive due to unexpected slow down during tight maneuvers.

What stupid logic Bertrand is suggesting. Putting ADAS in all cars will bump up the price to astronomical figures. While, he and other car makers will make the money and enjoy going to the bank. ADAS is a useless ‘gold plating’ feature. Most people here drove all these years without any accident and without ADAS. Why now?

Issue here is that safety features like adas , unlike air bags , are offered only in top end models. Now if adas is so good , make it mandatory. Also many features like cruise shud b removed as it is highly improbable that the same can b used in Indian traffic. Car makers are loading features w/o their utility.

What does research say about the statistics of the efficacy of Automatic Emergency Braking in Indian scenarios (highway / city / village / town etc.)? Statistics is better than 'thoughts' from the layman.

looks like double edged sword these so called features with even minor errors resulting in the loss and terrible damaged to life and properties and it needs much needed revamping before bringing these options into the automotives in the indian road conditions and terrains and tough conditions, even if it takes time and seeks additional cost or pricing in the overall sense!! need to see if these forum brings aboard such options and other key updates rather than being mouth piece or sponsor to the new brands of vehicles!!

ADAS is here to stay as a whole, and when AEB becomes a mandate, it’s obviously no longer optional and the system will not allow a driver to “turn it off” as suggested in this video. Drivers will come to accept this technology same as they’ve come to accept other mandated systems such as TPMS and rear cameras. In fact, they become not only accepted over time, but expected.

I am not sure what the "debate" here is about: ADAS (even more advanced ones) are being used quite successfully in the developed world (especially the EU). The question is not if "ADAS" is useful--which it self-evidently is; rather, it should be can it even work in India, where driving skills are on average poor (generously speaking), roads have few if any lane markings, and bumper-to-bumper traffic can make ADAS feel redundant. Finally, Indian cars are built to be cheap, first and foremost, so the added benefits of ADAS may not be realised as things stand today. In other words, better roads and related infrastructure along with improved driving skills may need to come first, with a possibly delayed ADAS mandate (to say 2030 or a few years later) sounds like a sensible policy.
