Honestly I prefer AoS now to 10th edition 40k, the rolls feel more akin to Kill Team and there's more dynamics to it gameplay wise than 40k to me. Spells and faction terrain make huge differences vs 40ks psychic phase of "I cast gun"

I think aos is that good blend of flavorful rules and armies that are still tight enough yet not as crunchy as to deter a larger audience. Not as crunchy as whfb but definitely not as basic as Warhammer 10th edition. A game with mechanics surface level enough to where you can enjoy doing goofy tactics and strategies but deep enough to real dig into the minutiae of the gameplay like the priority roll.

This is largely my sentiment. I prefer Fantasy, but if I want to turn my brain off and still be able to do some fun and interesting things, then AoS is a good game for that. I think my biggest problem with AoS is just how God awful the setting is.

@spnked9516
@spnked9516 6 ай бұрын
@@MySuperPowerIsITouchGrass It's definitely gotten better, in some respects - at least, but it's still a far cry from what I'd call good. The crux of the problem is that the entire setting is dependent upon the End Times - some of the worst fiction the BL has ever publish - and conveniently regurgitating concepts and characters from Fantasy for brand recognition. This problem is sort of amplified by the weightlessness and lack of place locations seem to have in relation to each other. When taken for it disparate elements, I think there is some good stuff in AoS. The Gloomspite Gitz, for example, are an interesting and logical extension of Fantasy's night goblins. As rough as parts in the book "Gloomspite" are, I think it does a pretty good job of illustrating just how nightmarish the badmoon is. The Kharadron Overlords are another example, but I think they need some more refining. But for every decent concept AoS puts forward, it has two or three that just drag it down. Why is Sigmar just the Fantasy version of 40k's Emperor of man? Why is Morathi just able to crawl out of Slaanesh? Why is Nagash an absolute jobber at every possible opportunity? Why does the Cities of Sigmar faction not actually play into the fact that it's supposed to be a patchwork of cultures and races from both the old and new settings? Just a lot of missed opportunities or questionable decisions going on.

I wanna point out the mechanic that is the cornerstone for why I quite playing 9th ed and kept playing AoS: the priority roll. On one hand it acts like a stop-gap compromise because GW refuses to join modern game design and introduce alternating activations. On the other hand, because it decides entire turn order at the start of every battle round, it becomes in practice a unique mechanic of its own. Every two turns in a game of AoS the prio roll is the fulcrum on which the battle's momentum can change wildly most notably in the form of the double turn. It adds an entire dimension of strategy. At its basic level it forces players to constantly assess how far to push things during their turn or how cagey they should play to protect themselves from getting wiped out by a double turn. At the highest levels it becomes an additional medium through which a player can game their opponent. At all levels it's an exciting moment that eliminates those IGOUGO situations at the tail end of 9th where a game could be talked through after only the first or second turn because straight IGOUGO only has 1 turn order per game whereas the prio roll creates 32 possible permutations of turn order over a full 5 round game. Before anyone complains about randomness - getting double turned is something you can and should plan for. It is routinely the same group of elite players winning major GTs and ranking the highest in the world. Accounting for the priority roll in your strategy is clearly possible, and it's clearly possible to be very good at it. Also, the competitive AoS scene is healthy and thriving. Check out TheHonestWargamer and Woehammer for stats and meta analysis. This will also be the 10th year for the AoS World Team Championships (not the GW championships) - an event that's entirely community run and organized. iirc it will be held in Amsterdam this summer.

I fell in love with Daughters of Khaine and have had so much fun playing them and the models are so cool looking. I started playing Hedonites of Slaanesh recently and they are just so unique and interesting to run. 40k is great and still fun, but AoS was a great change of pace for me. I'm SO happy to see the AoS content starting to come out! I can't wait to see where you go from here with future videos!!! I started in 2019 when I got a bunch of Goblins for Christmas that year. So I can attest, I was one of those people who didn't play Fantasy. But I LOVE AoS! I love the elevated setting, I love how interesting and unique all of the factions are. And you better believe I *love* the models. I own about 9 different AoS armies, all of which are over 2000 points, one of which is my (give or take) 10,000 points of Stormcast Eternals. I wouldn't have gone so deep if I didn't enjoy not just the hobby, but everything else around it, and it's for all of these reasons that I love AoS as much as I do. Now I can agree with most of your points on AoS, except for one aspect of 3rd edition. Battle Tactics, they're simply not fun, and I hope GW doesn't keep them going into 4th edition. So once again, thank you Arthur, thank you for brining some much needed attention to this wonderful game that doesn't get the attention or love I think it deserves.

I’m going to say one thing to all people looking at age of sigmar from lore perspective First, read Gloomspite by Andy Clark it’s a horror novel about well Gloomspite Gitz but it’s from POV of normal people (the ones you keep mentioning never existing in AoS) and is quite frankly amazing on all fronts Second, read any of the soulbound books and supplements ttrpgs are an easy ways for settings to make some fluff and flavour for their games and as Warhammer fantasy trrpg did it for FB, Soulbound does the same for age of sigmar. There are many more books available so don’t go telling that the world is shallow when you never read any of the lore that is being written

started playing AOS when the Seraphon (lizardmen) models finally got new sculpts last summer. I really enjoy the game, it is a lot of fun. The best way I can describe the rules for it is this: if 40K has weak faction rules but strong datasheets, AOS has VERY strong faction rules but weak datasheets. In the end it balances out in a similar way, but ends up having more interesting and thematic armies both visually and in playstyle. A direct example of this is I just played my first game vs. a Hedonites of Slaanesh army. They can, once per enemy unit per phase, up to 6 times in a turn, offer your opponent the ability to turn a dice roll into a 6. If your opponent accepts, you get D6 points that you can use for summoning or collect to gain buffs. If your opponent refuses, their unit takes D3 mortal wounds. The mechanic is incredibly fun and flavourful for both players, it's super cool.

I kind of like AoS, and there's a lot it actually has over 40k, like not focusing on Stormcasts to the same extent as Space Marines which overshadows pretty much every other faction combined, there's a lot of flavorful rules, and spellcasting is a lot more interesting than it is in 40k especially with the advent of 10th edition. There are a few issues that prevent me from getting fully into it though, like the wounding system being a flat roll, meaning a little crossbow is just as lethal to a peasant soldier as it is to Nagash, supreme lord of death. I also am not a fan of fixed squad sizes, but that's an issue 10th edition also has now.

It's secretly better than 40K, but not by such a margin that you should play it over 40K if you prefer 40K's setting. The models are awesome and generally quite varied, as opposed to "more space marines, but we made them red this time (but you're painting them purple anyway)." The combat is more focused on melee, meaning you'll generally have more to do during your opponent's turn. It also means your positioning is simultaneously easier to manage and harder to perfect. Apparently, that's a theme as well, as AoS is an easier setting to understand rules-wise. You may argue that these points don't outweigh 40K's benefits, like being the older brother with the larger d- community, but then again, I never said the game was superior in every way, I just said it's low-key more fun by a slight margin. They're both Warhammer, pick space psychic fantasy or medieval magic fantasy and have a blast while your wallet is rolling in its grave.

I MAY acquire some AoS minis to proxy for other fantasy models, or to go into the Bitz Box, but I'll be very careful about how I get them and where my money goes to. Honestly, the introduction of The Old World has only made me *saltier* about what happened with Fantasy Battles.. I really don't mean to be petty, that's my last intention, but for me the well has been poisoned; GW showed themselves to hold my investment in their properties in contempt and made it quite clear that we're all just wallets on legs as far as they're concerned, so why would I spare them ANY respect or grace in return?

Fantasy had an easy answer how it needed to end. Take a page out of what Legend of the 5 rings card game would do but turned down. L5R would have writters at tournaments writing in lore real time based on tournament results. To end fantasy, set up every cliff hanger. Hold world tournaments and knock off the factions two or three a year based on how the tournaments ended. Have so many slots open for each faction at start, and let the battles play out. Then write in the lore more winning factions causing the fall of the losing ones as best they could. Each tournament narrow down the survivors until one remained. Everyone would be invested, and noone could blame them for them results. Also, they would have time if they bothered to treat all the important lore and characters fairly.

Aos in total is an interesting game. It certainly has some balance issues (internal once even more) but that’s more something that will never be removed. Something I personally have a problem with aos is probably more around the lore. I mean while the lore of aos in total is getting spread more and more, many armies just don’t get mentioned, aren’t a thread even if they should be and are just considered a joke. So for example if I’m somebody who plays skaven or for example beasts of chaos it’s incredible hard to get any feeling for the aos lore of those armies as they don’t really get mentioned And when they do they get mentioned so shortly or are just a joke that gets beaten down that nobody really cares. And for that reason I personally belief is probably why so many players still prefer old world lore at least right now over that of aos.

When GW invented Age of Sigmar, they were confident that the Mortal Realms world would be quick and intuitive for all fantasy players. Because at the core is the lores about the Winds of Magic and the Realm of Chaos - the most unique features of Warhammer. But they were cruelly mistaken: for most fantasy fans, the entire metaphysics of Warhammer World is an empty phrase. Proof: ask your fantasy friend to name from memory the names and characters of all the Winds of Magic, and I’m sure only 1 out of 10 can name them without wikipedia. Resume: Age of Sigmar is not understood only because the knowledge of the majority does not go beyond memes and clishes.

Grew up playing WHFB and absolutely despised AoS for YEARS after it came out, refused to even acknowledge it, but at the start of the pandemic a friend convinced me to try the game out at his place and i've been hooked since haha. The lore is harder to get into but it's well worth it once you do!

As a kid 20+ years ago i always marveled at the fantasy models. And i loved the english medieval undertone. Now as a fat 30 plusser that finally decided that warhammer should stop plaguing the back of my mind i finally decided to take the leap. Went to a gamestore a few cities over and ended up with tyranids cus i just found out the dream minis of my youth with square bases had become obsolete. Dont get me wrong i love me some 40k. But i still remember being around 10, walking in a store that said gameworkshop just to be disapointed they did not sell ps1 games. And yet spending my whole day there without spending money.

I'm just getting back into the table top miniature wargaming hobby and recently thought I'd play some 40k. After not having played since 3rd edition I thought I would pick up my beloved Eldar (Aeldari) again and start with a simple combat patrol box and an Autarch. When researching paint schemes (looking for the rule of cool) I stumbled across a video tutorial on painting Lumineth Realm-Lords. I thought that clean fantasy color would look great on the Eldar whos miniatures are really starting to look dated. Now, Its got me looking at AoS and I'm debating if I even want to get back into 40k. Its like that 'Distracted Boyfriend' meme. I'm walking with Yvraine but looking at a Scinari Enlightener.

I would love to get into AOS, but it's a lot of environmental reasons holding me back. I'm already invested in 40k but I don't have a full army yet, and I can't really afford to start a new one. There also aren't any AoS players nearby that I know of. I also don't have the motivation to learn another game at this point.

My one comment is that in starting "now" is buy based on the look of the army and don't buy books. 4E is right around the corner and we have no idea what GW is going to do with it. So be aware when making the investment. (I'm personally optimistic about 4E though.)

AoS is mixed for me, a lot of models in their range are great and as a chaos player, I like the fact (most) my demon models can be played in both 40k and AoS. The lore is probably the main point of contention for me and Im sure many others. On one hand I like how much they’ve expanded on the nature of chaos, its forms of worship among mortals and more major plots that actually change something about them. On the other hand, Warhammer fantasy for me has an innate appeal for having an actual planet map in old world. This becomes more apparent when playing something like TWW3, map whoring is fun and really gives a sense of the factions in play, something that innately has an appeal that can separate from 40k. The fantasy style realm orb things in AoS take that away from me even if I learned to like them.

I just got into AoS about a month ago, picked up a Dominion box cheap and decided to go with the Kruleboyz (Wonderful choice on my part) and I haven't regretted it at all. I was of the party when i first got into the hobby to begin with by reading the books of WH Fantasy, and I disliked the idea of all of it just getting tossed to the side for AoS and actively avoided it like the plague. Now that i'm in, I'm trying to get others to have the realization of what I had, that it isn't terrible, it's quite wonderful.

Never been a big old world or AoS fan however i did always like the models and have grabbed bits and pieces over the years. set the lore aside completely and pick up Warcry, its the best and slickest system they have done in years, very much like Killteam only much more streamlined and fast to pick up. another plus side is the models seem to be a higher level of detail than the 40k stuff. I still prefer the 40k universe over AoS but warcry is very much worth a look as its a bloody good game, red harvest is a great starting box and still about in hobby shops.

Still at "the end times happened and it's all manfred's fault!" bit :P Models look good (nighthaunt, bonereapers and to an extent the sea elves), if a bit too over the top at times, stormcast, while cool on paper, look waaaay too much like space marines(not even starting on stupid names). I would be interested in the lore tho.

I played bretonnia for al my fantasy 5+6+7+8th and was furious at first so skipped aos 1.0 but started aos at 2.0 and having lots of fun. Tournament play is a lot more fun in aos then warhammer fantasy ever was for me. 3.0 was a step up and i feel 4.0 will be better again. At first i wasnt al that sure of the lore. Since i collect al the lore books. But now after a few years the lore feels cool and different and im really loveing it. I love the way felix is out of the gotrek and felix storys and we now have this crazy aelf and gotrek his crazy adventures. I dont get people who keep saying the lore sucks because it really doenst. Just be more open minded and start reading some stuf

I’ve always wanted to check out AOS. As a fantasy player I stayed away from it since AOS killed the fantasy setting I fell in love with as a young teen. But as time goes on….it’s grown on me. The models are fantastic, and it was a nice break into a new thing. I’ve thought about maybe getting into gloomspite gitz! Time will tell. In the end, I find the models/armies much more unique than many 40k ones. Especially when 30% of models in 40k are some variation of space marine. Thanks for the video!

I just got into Warhammer 40K table top after following the lore for years, so for me I’d only really give it a shot if AoS gameplay was significantly different than 40K, cause I’m currently loving my 40K army and I don’t just want to remake them in AoS and effectively play the same game again.

Weird. I happen to be in both groups: I played WHFB as Tomb Kings and hated that my army got squatted. I sold my stuff, and never looked back. Except recently when I did. Found a few factions I like, started enjoying the Lore, and the mechanics are SUPER good and fun. I almost, ALMOST prefer it over 10th Ed 40k. And from a competitive standpoint, the game seems to be way more balanced than something like 40k. Just look at the Top 8 of the recent LVO. Such a large diversity of armies represented. That's always a good sign.

I'm having a lot of fun with AoS. It's a much more experimental version of Warhammer than 40k is. There's more variety in mission types, some of the factions have more interesting mechanics, and interestingly, only a few subfactions are head and shoulders above or below the rest of the list of factions which sit at 45-55% win rates. If anything AoS frustrates my ability to enjoy 40k because I know GW can do better, because it does better in AoS. I like 40k, but I prefer AoS, and it's not close.
