Last year, in the midst of the Evergreen protests, a dean decides to pressure science faculty to retroactively boost the grades of a student with underrepresented identities...

At 13:20 your undershirt disappears. I had to stop the video and rewind it several times to figure out why. Here's my list of possible reasons: 1) You were abducted by aliens and returned sans shirt 2) A temporal distortion switched you with the SJW version of you, from an alternate reality. (I will be watching future videos closely to see if it's the real you.) 3) One of your cats grabbed a loose thread from your shirt and ran off at supersonic speed. 4) You took a quick break to visit your harem, carelessly forgetting to replace your shirt. 5) A butterfly in Asia flapped its wings and your shirt blew off. 6) The shirt returned to its own dimension. 7) You realized that you had been wearing the shirt for 3 days and decided to wash it. 8) The shirt was borrowed and the owner dropped by to retrieve it. 9) You flexed your pectoral muscles and the shirt disintegrated. 10) You took a quick break to practice your Magic Mike pole dancing routine and flung your shirt across the room. 11) An oppressed student from Evergreen demanded that you remove your shirt because it's a symbol of white privilege. 12) You were hot and removed your shirt. I'm pretty sure one of these reasons is correct. P.S. Don't correct my grammar and sentence structure. It's just a KZfaq comment. Thanks. P.P.S I realize that sentence structure IS grammar. I mentioned it for emphasis, so please forgive the redundancy.

neosildrake. Here's a concept. If you're struggling in a class, be responsible to communicate with your professor. Then take steps to do what you need to do to improve your comprehension, resulting in improved marks. Why doesn't that dean encourage students being proactive? It's not that hard. I had to do this in elementary, junior high, high school AND college. It's just what you do.

As a high school teacher, I face this shit every term. Last term, I had a student that I failed because he didn't come to class and didn't hand in most assignments passed by another teacher, after the term had ended, because he did a few worksheets for this other teacher. The principal was totally down with it. Also, I was never even consulted and this was all done behind my back.Disgusting.

Ryan :x yeah, people shouldn't learn math and science. Devoting your life to helping people understand these subjects is a "problem." The real problem is forcing children by law to attend school when they are too ignorant to understand the value of an education. Such people should not be allowed to interfere with the kids and teachers who do. When these slackers (probably this includes you) get older and finally figure out that they need to know something to be able to earn decent money, they will have to pay for their education. Finally, they will understand the value of a competent teacher. I always get the last laugh.

Its the participation award syndrome, honestly. They don't realize that you are there to relay the information and asses them on their understanding of that relay. Its not you as the teacher should be learning this stuff and thus should be just passing them for attending. No, they would rather blame their failure on the teacher, then look at the student and say "hey lil Johnny according Mr.Fitze's records, you failed mainly because you didn't attend class nor did you turn in the majority of the assignments" is only setting the child up for failure.

They shouldn't be taken seriously, and students who value their education should sue thise in charge at Evergreen for devaluing the degree and schooling that the student paid considerable amounts of money for. IMO they are as responsible to their students to maintaining the value of a degree from them as those running companies are responsible to shareholders to maintain the value of the company, and can be held liable if they intentionally tahe steps to devalue the company.

So you've got some juvenile adult who wants a 'note' to suggest she has a depth of knowledge which she lacks, and just wants you to to sign off. So you do this, and she uses the 'note' to pursue her first job, and the boss wakes up a month into her employment to find that she really lacks the knowledge level to do the job. If he fires her....she accuses him of racism. So he moves her to a job that has no advancement, and no access/need to the knowledge she pretends to have. Years pass, and she eventually tries to get another job, and the deep hole that she dug...proves her job value is worthless. And then what? Blame the college, like 100,000 new graduates from across the nation do each year?

I was a student at Evergreen. I’m also a lifelong local resident and a minority. I was always a terrible student in high school and went there to study art and writing... which I could have done without spending so much (but it’s one of the cheapest schools for in-state tuition). I ran into problems with my own life that kept me away from attending classs and I accept that in the end I’m responsible for my own results. I never appealed for credit I knew I didn’t earn. Evergreen attracts destructive people. But it also attracts a variety of people who come from everywhere around the country who want to just learn. Evergreen has had a lot of resources for artists, filmmakers, lab and computer techs, and a large library. It is a good school that has had some very fair judging professors who did not give people a free pass. But I’ve had some of professors who are a part of the “Equity Canoe” and I’m surprised when I hear stuff about them because they would be warm and welcoming to me when I dealt with them, but they come off as different people. I also never attended a Day of Absence event unless a professor made our class do it for credit.
@HistoryGe3k

You get credit for "A Day of Absence" event. So - do you get credit for racist behavior towards your fellow white students by telling them that they can not turn up for their classes due to the color of their skin OR do you get credit for not turning up for classes and watch Netflix instead? I am a bit confused. Do KKK members get credit to their degrees for their (disgusting) racist behavior as well? From an equity perspective, why not?

This action destroys the value of a college degree. Evergreen is willing to hand out degrees to people who don't do the work. That makes the degree *WORTHLESS*. It's racist and bigoted to allow a black student lesser standards than any of the other students. This robs other black students who *HAVE* done the work of their legitimate recognition. It's time to shutdown Evergreen. They've lost their way and are not capable of being redeemed.

Thank you for sharing your experience and views. I never was (obviously) even near this college - but the statements i had to read, the actions and events i was able to watch on video, the "protests" which became public and a couple of videos showing profs and staff members "in action" show a VERY different picture. You mentioned you belong to a minority. May i ask to which? It looks a lot to me, that your experience would been rather worse if you would belong to the countries "majority" (which is also a minority....but thats just btw). And how is your feeling about your requested participation at the "Day of Absence" event? Just to give it away: if i hear people are excluded or segregated because of their skin colour i get mad - and i dont care which colour is aimed at.

The stem professor sounds like she's biased against students who get answers on questions wrong, don't turn in work, and who turn in shoddy or incorrect work. This can be easily proved if you look at the grades given to students who get more questions wrong, don't do work etc. They just want her to be equitable and give credit to students, regardless if they have learned the material or not.

David R And it has leaked down to the high school level as well: a former HS teaching colleague tells me that the admin wants teachers to give 50% credit on assignments, projects or reports EVEN IF THE STUDENT DID NOT TURN ANYTHING IN. Why? Because it is too hard to make up 50 points (or 50%) and still pass the class, so let’s take that “obstacle” out of the way. Why do they push for that? Because the federal government (and probably the state as well) tracks graduation rates generally and by group (gender, ethnic, etc.) So the admins of the district and therefore the school do not want anyone to fail because the failure would show larger failures among certain groups, which of course, shows bias/bigotry on the part of teaching staff or district policies. Of course student choices have NOTHING to do with their outcomes. Yeah, right. 😡😡😡😡😡

The staffing agency I work at doesn't give much weight to degrees anymore. We have tests we give potential candidates to see what level their knowledge of the industry is at. We had to start doing that because we were sending too many incompetent degree holders to sites that just screw up everything. It allowed us to measure candidates far more accurately and we're now one of the largest suppliers of temps in the US. You don't have to worry about your degree not being worth anything, because that's already reality.

It seems the fair thing to do for potential employers of this student is to add a footnote to her degree explaining this episode of fairness in her academic preparation for employment. This would be fair to the other students who earned the credits by actually performing to a standard. As you mentioned how does a employer know if the graduate they interview for a job actually knows the material or was given special privilege. Evergreen has become the intercity highschool of colleges, just let everybody pass, keep them moving through. Just another slice in the death of a thousand cuts for evergreen's reputation and future viability.

The BenC It doesn't matter what vernacular is used, the leftists wait to add what ever we use to identify us in their dialectic and label any thing we say, and us, as unacceptable. If you came in out of cold and said "brrr, it is cold outside," they would then accuse you of being anti-cold or of being alt-hot. All for the purpose of weakening, or, to dis-empower your speech. The only acceptable position you may have, by their dialectic, is one of mea culpa.

This argument that she would have done better if she wasn't so busy and "emotionally exhausted", and furthermore saying that she voluntarily took on these extra tasks as a point in favor of passing her is kinda absurd. Perhaps one of the most important things being honed and tested in an education is one's ability to manage their time and prioritize their work. If signing up for clubs and protesting earns you a passing grade, then everyone would just do that. Well... I guess that's exactly what happened at Evergreen. That faculty at a university don't understand this kinda proves how garbage Evergreen is. Maybe it is the case that it's up to the teachers to micromanage their students and tell them how to organize their time, but passing her certainly won't have this effect. The easiest way to force students to learn these skills is to fail them when they don't exhibit these skills. It's pretty simple, really. I just really bugs me that anybody would see it as legitimate that a student can commit themselves to all sorts of extra curricular nonsense and then use that as an excuse for their subpar schoolwork, not just to themselves and maybe to their parents, but an excuse that actually merits them demanding a passing grade. It's something I even saw a lot of in my education, and even then many teachers would take that bullshit seriously. Totally ignoring the fact that arguably one of the major underlying reasons to have an assortment of extra curricular activities is to allow high performing students to challenge themselves when it comes to time management and prioritization. To undermine that idea and actually teach students that the activities they *feel* like spending their time on are more valuable and more relating to their overall performance than the coursework itself is antithetical to effective education. That is not only *not* something that would help these students in a career, but it's an expectation that will harm them severely when it comes to job performance. But who are we kidding? Evergreen students by and large will become public servants - bureaucrats, equity officers, redundant case worker type jobs - jobs where actual productivity and competence are liabilities and where advancing in that space has everything to do with one's ability to bully, whine and arbitrarily wield power. They are being trained for a certain type of job - the kind of cushy, vastly overpaid and underworked jobs that actively drain resources away from the economy themselves while simultaneously hindering the productive sectors of the economy from creating prosperity. USSR 2.0 here we come.

100% agree. Personally, I really struggled when I first started college, even though I had been a high achieving high school student. I nearly flunked out after my first year. The solution for me was to take a year off to work a minimum wage job, which suddenly made college seem more appealing. I switched majors, buckled down, and got my act together. I’m very proud to say that I graduated last spring with multiple honors, and by the time I was in my senior year, I was juggling a full course load, research with a professor, a part-time internship, and an officer position at a student organization. Those first few years were really, really rough, but I’m GLAD my professors and the administration didn’t go easy on me. If they had just waved me through, I would have continued to struggle my entire college career, and probably my entire professional life, as well.

I got a BS back in college and it took me 5 years, because SHOCK, life happens. Things don't go as planned. It taught me so much about how I wasn't the be all end all special snowflake I thought I was, and that the world will leave you behind if you dont keep up. And was a large part of me growing up. The balls on this student to even think that just because she was stressed she could go to someone and propose this! It shows that she honestly believes that she is a victim in every aspect of her life. It's too hot, the weather has always had it out for me! I wrecked my car into a tree, arborial discrimination against me! This does her such a disservice. When will she learn that sometimes she is the problem, and that she needs to better herself!? Instead of her needing to be a dynamic and better person, the world needs to find a way to fit her into it. Otherwise it's more proof that she is being victimized. I am legitimately worried about what our country, and other parts of the world, will be like in 10-15 years... these children are not going to get the chance to become adults when the world thinks it's its responsibility to fix everything they fuck up for them. And lets be honest, It's not even mostly this girls fault, whether shes 18-21 she's a frickin child still. It's the "adults" around her that refuse to take off the kid gloves and teach her about life. This guy should be fired for promoting destructive solutions. In the end this will be so much worse for this girl than if they just make her take summer semester courses, or repeat the course the next quarter.

Honestly Benjamin, I found that what Evergreen did and the Dean did was an embarrassment. I can't believe that they are willing to pressure my own current Integrated Natural Science faculties in order to give her the upper division science she needs in order to pass. I found that I have no problem giving her tutoring and all of that, but doing so in order for her to take the certification is just plain messed up. I am Southeast Asian, have darker color than many students in my program, and yet I did very well. I personally perservere through the course and managed to make it through with full credit for Integrated Natural Science without complaining. I wonder what makes her think that she is above the law? I personally still think that I have yet to see Evergreen up their standards and their tutoring in order to help students like myself get through the degree because I am seeking to get my naturopathic medical degree and what Evergreen did will not go well with all of my graduate schools. If Evergreen continues down this route, then I am afraid that I have to either transfer or take the consortium partners in order to finish strong. Don't make me do this Evergreen!!

Sondra, the real world does not judge you based on your race or gender. Sure some people are racists or bigots but you will have a difficult time finding them no matter how hard you look. You are solely responsible for your fate. History has no impact on how hard you work or how able you are. I agree about your point though. The backlash is definitely a negative against people like you who rightfully earn their position. But as I said before, most people will not even notice any of that and will judge you based on your real value. There will be some who doubt your merits because of the underachievements of those around you but once they really look at you they will see you for who you are, someone who works hard to provide value.

Pizza Earth: I don't think that white people really understand what racism or homophobia is, which is the problem. At least, we don't experience it personally and directly, not in any real terms. If we do, it is in a contrived environment that we choose to be in, like a participant of Day of Absence. We claim we know what it is because we have black friends or don't gay bash. You wouldn't appreciate education that, without cultural studies, would be mainstreamed to white America. In order to learn other people's historical value if they are not white, you need to take a cultural studies class. The prospective of the white man in history and science and culture is considered the status quo of EDUCATION IN THE U.S. When students (whether Evergreen students or not) call others out for those accepted pathos and educational value, they are libtards and their colleges don't deserve funding. Personally, if I could and if it would apply to me, I would sue this kid. He is trashing Evergreen. He is not only destroying careers but destroying future careers. All this shit was going on at Evergreen 20 years, or even since Evergreen started 45 years ago. It's the fucking Millennial whiners that are causing the intolerance (black or white), and it is fucking aggravating. These fucking Millennial whiners do include Ben Boyce. What a fucking idiot. Grow up. University of Washington is much worse. Having 10,000 students a year means no one learns anything. UW gets much more requests from students for higher grades. That has been going on forever.

It is not uncommon that schools, under pressure from affluent parents, change grades due to "gifts" the parents have made to said schools. In that case, the students are typically just going home to "run" daddy's business(sitting in an office and picking their noses before going to the gym, lunch etc aka Tommy Boy). In this case, one hopes that these grads are never given jobs where they have access to anything that can harm themselves or their fellow beings. One hopes. The other day I watched a construction crew member picking up a six pack for lunch before returning to work on high steel. I used to watch construction crews smoke the special stuff before going back to hard wire a building...Evergreen is a very small puddle in a sea of retardation.

Some of the arguments do make sense, especially the part about past tests being used as gauge for current knowledge, which they no longer reflect. The correct way would be to re-test everything at the end of the course. That would also give the students who only learn for a test and forget soon after a score that reflects their lack of knowledge. The flaw in his argument is to apply it to only one student and not improve the system for everyone.
