I own a 2013 Model S P85+ with 181k miles. I still get 232 miles of range on a full charge, 208 at 90%. Still original battery. I will continue to see how it does. Doing good so far.

Before I bought my Tesla my worst fear was battery degradation but after having owned and driven it every day for three years I am happy to say that there's no significant degradation so far.

I have a 2013 Model S 85 187,000 miles and still have 87% original battery capacity. Rear brakes also original. No issues with long trips.

Yes, it is worth it. Our 2014 Model S85 just had its ninth annual service today, consisting of wiper blades, fob batteries and tire inflation. Spent about $3,000 on maintenance since new. Robust and wonderful vehicle that we took on a 5,350 mile break in run a month after we got it. San Diego to Banff and Lake Louise, Canada. It started at 265 miles of range, now 256. We charge low and slow in our garage, 15 amps, 240V.

Superchargers are often paired: One charger powers 2 plugs. If the paired plug is already connected, you'll get a lower charge rate until the other car's charge rate starts to taper off as it fills. For best performance, use a plug where its pair is not in use. Supercharger plugs are numbered usually 1A, 1B, etc, so you can see how they're paired. Some of the latest Superchargers are not paired, delivering full power to a single plug, but with an older Model S, you typically won't see higher than 150 kw of peak charging anyway. (We've owned a 2013 Model S P85 for 8 years and 90% of our driving is long distance.)

What a breath of fresh air to watch a calmly delivered, useful, real-world scenario of what an old EV can do and how it's a great thing to own and live with. Thank you so much. Buying an old S is something I've often wondered about as they appear to be absolute bargains, they are far more handsome than the other Teslas, and I see them as a modern classic. Also, unlike all other cars, all Teslas are continually updated with new features, plus some of the old ones come with free charging for life. What's not to like?! Some things I would have loved you to cover are the costs for servicing of an old Tesla, including what the car you used had experienced in its service history, some evidence from many old Model S's that have covered lots of miles, the potential for depreciation or indeed appreciation, and anything else we need to consider with an old S. The slow charger problem you experienced shows viewers, incorrectly I expect?, that charging is problematic. If, in yours and others experience, charging is normally quick and seamless then it would have been advantageous to have this clarity. The particular car you used here was one of the most attractive Teslas I've seen; what colour grey was that, and are those wheels a normal option - it looked fantastic?! Thanks again and I'd really love to see you make more videos about what it's like to live with an old S, or indeed any other secondhand EVs, and how that could be perfect for many people's use cases. Keep up the good work man!

I've driven a couple older Model S vehicles and I own a 2018 Model 3 and one of the most notable differences between them is charging speed at superchargers. Tesla has made huge improvements to increase charging speed since the Model 3 came out. My Model 3 will sometimes hit 250-300kW during charging making charging go super quick. I just recently drove a 2017 Model S P100D as a loaner and all of my supercharging sessions were below 100kW (probably 50-60kW average).

This is an excellent video for anyone considering buying an older Tesla. And the commentors who also own an older Tesla back that up.

8:53 I’ve only charged to 100% once in our P85+, just to see what the car’s estimated max range would show after 145k miles. 238 miles out of the original 265.. only 10% less than when factory fresh. The last 3% took a while. From 97 to 98%, it took 5:51 min, from 98-99, it took 8:34 min, and from 99-100, it took a whopping 21:38 min! I saw the 100% drop to 99% after just a little over a mile driving on the freeway, and then I was able to travel 4.1 miles from 99-98%, so it tracked as expected as far as Wh/mi goes. But aside from this, the mist I’ve ever charged it before then was 96%, and that was road tripping through the wilderness on our way up to Canada. We ended up arriving at the next station with ample charge, but we were giving ourselves the peace of mind as we were traveling through sparsely populated areas for that leg. Tesla has since added Superchargers in between those points, so charging that much for that journey again wouldn’t be necessary. In any case, the vast majority of our charges are done up to 60-80%, and we usually don’t recharge until in the 20’s or 30’s. Makes for shorter stops and more than enough to top off at home. Exceptions would be when road tripping across the desert 🏜️ we’ll charge up to 80-90% on some of those desolate legs just to have more than needed. Never know when you might encounter strong head winds, need to take a detour, unexpectedly take the scenic route, etc.

Good vid as always from Ca Dream Drives. Well crafted and fun, and as a benefit shows the variation of So Cal landscape from the beach to 118F Palm Springs. Henrik clearly discusses the current perceived limitations of electric cars. How much is perception, how much reality. This 10 y/o Tesla gets very high marks and is 'proof of concept' for ev's. For us deciding on our next car, this information is significant, especially from an experienced 'driver's driver.' Looking forward to the next vid in the series. (I'm a subscriber.)

Sort of a non-event. I have a 7 year old Tesla with 129k miles. Routinely drive 360 mile round trips once a week. Have seen essentially no degradation between 70k miles and 129k miles on clock. As for charging speeds. As a 2013, you have a Gen 1 pack, known for slowest charging. Additionally, the charging station you selected appears to be a 'urban' charger, which has a max charge rate of 75kwh if I remember correctly. On a 2015 S90D, using the latest supercharger, I routinely see 110-115kwh up to about 45% soc, and then then normal taper down of the charging curve. I agree, the last '10 minutes' it takes longer time wise what the dash says to charge. However, I think a better test for your video would've been a Gen 3 Supercharger. As for pre-conditioning. On a cold day, I would say the car is doing that. Since you just completed a highway drive, at almost 100F, I doubt any preconditioning was used by the car. As the a/c cools the battery in hot weather, it was probably at the optimum temperature for charging when you got to the supercharger All in all a good video to show that EVs are not 'throw aways' and that batteries can still be useful 10 years after the purchase.

Your S looks pristine - very nice for a 10 year old car. I think the style of the car certainly is still on point: it looks fast just sitting still. Tesla proves you don't need to completely change up the style every two years if you do it right the first time. Our 2019 Model 3 (I added some extra bling) and brilliant white seats still looks fantastic.

Took my 2015 s 90d on a road trip from Florida to new York in January, and it worked great. And on my wife's 2014 base 60 we upgraded the computer ($2500) and it feels like a much newer car.

Just a quick bit of advice, if you change your old mcu to mcu2 it makes a world of difference. The best tesla upgrade for older models.

Ive run a Model S P85 from new since 2015 now 127,000 uk miles later its still stunning. Peal white no sunroof, cream leather and Alicantera. I get the same range so 245 miles at 100%. Here in UK there are Superchargers everywhere now (back in 2015 there were about 4 stations). The old classic S still looks current, ride brilliant and is free Supercharging for life. Common concusses is the rear wheel drive cars steer the best and I would agree. 0-60 in 4,0 seconds means they are still quick.

Thank you for taking time to explain the charging stations and why the fans are running etc. We are going to be purchasing a Tesla soon and your videos have been the most helpful of all we have seen for more reasons than what I mentioned above. Kudos.

My Model S P85 is 10 years old as of this month (January 2013 build). It's worth it because it's been paid off for years. Maintenance averages about $300 a year, plus tires every 3 years or so at this point. It's great for minimizing cash flow out on vehicle costs.

I love road trips in my 2013 P85. My only issues have been related to my car being lowered on 22 inch wheels. Absolutely love it

I bought a used 2018 Model S with only 24,500 miles on it. I am totally in love with it. Red with cream inside. Simply stunning. Can't wait to take it on road trips!

Excellent video on the real life sustainability of these EV cars. I too, have older version (2016 MS refresh/ Nov build), same color: Midnight Metallic Grey, 21 inch Grey Turbine wheels-wrapped in Continental silent tires. Car is paid for. Garaged 24/7 since 2016. Even purchased a full PPF back in 2016, that is still looking sexy wet like yours! Folks confuse my car with 2022/2023!!!! I did do the delete chrome DIY myself. Since 2016, the only things replaced on it consistently, was the four tires every-36 mths. Free supercharging still, free premium wifi. And, still gets off the line faster than 90% of 2023 sport cars today! I purchased the FSD at $2000 or $5000 back in 2016; I can’t remember which, but I use the FSD every week with no issues. I did purchase the MCU2 upgrade $1500. Also, next week Tesla is upgrading my cameras for FREE because I’m an original FSD owner of 2016. Overall, my MS drives smooth, no maintenance issues, and degradation is about 10% since 2016. I’ve currently have 103,000 miles on her. Yes, I have an MY Long range as well. CyberTruck is also reserved. I will NEVER take any other car on a road trip other than Tesla. The technology mix with security, sentry, and situational awareness of driving all around me is second to none! It’s the best car for road trips! And, Yes, I still get software updates periodically! How cool is that! So happy with this product as a consumer! Neighbors and strangers ask me all the time about running out of juice or relevant concerns. I tell them, for starters, purchasing a Model S, is usually reserved for homeowners who have level 2 charging in their garages. Model X/Y as well. The other model 3-I’ve experienced is usually for the younger crowd. LOVED YOUR VIDEO! So much money I’ve saved over the long run with this car! Some Consumers have no idea how fun, safety, and practical the Tesla brand is. BTW… Did we tell the consumers about how safe this car is comparatively to other brands!?

Im about to buy an Tesla S 85 Performance /2013/. Got a test drive, amazing car. Even if its lose 20% of battery i dont care. Just charge 1 time more than usual doesnt mean its bad. Amazing experience.

I love my 2013 Model S which I bought 15 months ago with 116,000 miles. I’ve put 37k miles on it since then. I’ve had the brakes done and some suspension work, as well. The MCU and drive unit was replaced before I bought it. The new drive unit failed a couple of months after I purchased the car, so it was replaced for free as it was still under warranty. The car is super comfortable, and I agree with some of the other commenters that the model S is still the best looking car Tesla has produced. It is also tremendously awesome to have free super charging and all the extra space in the frunk that’s available without the front drive unit/biodefense hardware taking space between your front wheels. I had another great electric car before this one, a Chevrolet Bolt, but the battery issues drove me to sell it back to GM. The best thing about Teslas is the charging network. It was a complete hassle doing road trips with the Bolt. Just not enough reliable public charging infrastructure in place yet. You can’t beat the convenience and reliability of the Tesla supercharging network.

Just recently bought a 2015, P85D+ Brown Titanium Metalic with white interior. Full package and option with HW AP 1.0 with an upgraded MCU2.0. @90k mile for $26k So far, it is worth it.

This was an excellent review of an older Tesla. I own a 2020 model 3 with 70k miles on it and it’s still going fantastic! My car was in the shop and my loaner car was a 2017 model s and it was nice but I prefer my model 3 over the s. But if it was a newer Model s I probably would have liked it more. The supercharger network is fanatstic down here in Texas and I have 2 superchargers within 3 miles from me so I’m very fortunate. I plan on driving this car until I get a new one most likely a little later this year. But I have my fill trust in Tesla now. They really are fantastic vehicles

1:39 I have one of the first model S. I like how you can see the delamination of the LCD here that is SO common in these older cars. The display still works, but it looks ugly. Mine has grown to the entire bottom half of my display. The biggest issue with this is that the advesive leaks out into your console and if you aren't careful you will have very sticky fingers if you touch the wrong part of your car. So far, my model S is still running great though. Being the performance model it eats tires like cookie on crack would eat cookies, but that's a bit on me. Cheers to Tesla for making a great car! I still love it even with it's blemishes!

Yeah I've been to Palm Springs and I can attest it is freaking HOT!!!! Even dry heat bakes and being out in 100+ heat is absolutely no fun! But at night it does cool down fast. But afternoon to sundown heat is brutal! Also driving a ten year old Tesla with 100,000 + and still having the long range capacity is a definite sign of a very well made car!!!!

Really good video, thanks! One thing though, Tesla recommends you charge to a maximum of 90% usually for better battery health. It’s probably ok to charge higher very infrequently, like to 95% once on a trip. Also, charging for the newer 2021+ Model S vehicles and other Teslas is more than twice as fast and they launched their even faster V4 Superchargers. All good news, so by the time you get some refreshments, the car is ready. 2017+ Model 3s already have faster charging enabled. If you charge only at home using Level 2 240 V charging, then there can be zero wait by the time you are ready in the morning to go. All clean and better for the environment too, with zero emissions. Many people even charge for free at home with their own solar panels, or in some cases wind power! Free and clean energy!

I noticed when you picked your station you didn’t select it by the speed of the charger and when you clicked on the slowest charger and then wondered why it took longer it made me think that you were not used to electric vehicles. Overall though I really did enjoy your content. Thank you.

I recently drove an S 75D as a loaner while my MY 2021 goes for "repair" due to water intrusion. The suspension was a lilttle nicer, soft but just a bit compared to MY LR. I wouldn't buy a used model S 75d. It doesn't feel like the tesla experience is there vs newer models. Surprisingly the battery was still good in that model s with 87k miles on it.

I got the same car here 2012 P85 signature at 122k and still running strong 😅 my full charge sits at 238 miles of range and was 265 new.

Our family has three of those still great cars 2013 , 2014 and 2015 year model S cars no problems. Over 300.000 km (186.000 miles)on each. Charging at SuC is slow compared to when they were new but you get used to it.

While (super)charging the Tesla takes the power needed for the A/C from the charger, not from the battery. Other EVs do it the other way round, but I prefer the way Tesla does it.

The Model S will always look super sexy. No doubt. What Tesla needs is a robust after-market for mods and batteries to keep these cars out of land-fills. The Prius battery market is filled with inde refurb guys who can provide battery packs far far lower than what Toyota would charge and that is a very good thing. My Prius is ugly, old (2005) and un-sexy, but at 200k miles I am getting 40 mpg on the original battery pack. She is a terrific around town car.

How much to replace the Tesla battery? $23,000?

I have run an old Mod.S 85 for the last three years and its fine. I no longer charge the battery up to 100% and then drive until its more or less empty like you would with a gas car, I just start my journey and stop at random chargers for 5 to 10 maybe 15 mins and then continue on. This takes the stress out of charging, gives me short breaks to stretch my legs and keeps the battery in its most effective range. One thing I would recommend is an upgrade to MUC2, the old MUC1 gets really lethargic after 10 years and spoils your experience with this otherwise fabulous car.

The center display is much better than what I see... which is just the car and the speed. I know I can change the side display items but can I change the presentation of the center item? Maybe in California. I have massive range anxiety after trying to to take my 2013 model s 60 version from Minneapolis to Green Bay in the dead of winter. Made it but had to combine all my battery saving techniques. Yes it was a bad idea. I did get a gas car for long hauls shortly after... 😢

I collected my Model S in February 2015, and have done nearly 80K miles. I am about to do my 14th road trip in it, from the middle of England to the south of Spain. Previously I have driven it to Dresden, Ljubljana/Trieste, Barcelona, Valencia, Szczecin (Poland), Denmark, Bologna/Cinque Terre, the Dolomites, Seville/the Algarve etc. 250 miles is NOT a road trip, I've driven further than that to go and buy something. But the quick answer is: Yes.

For me, charging for more than 30 min and the small range ruins everything. I know some colleges who had to park there electric car in the city and proceed to take the train to work because they wouldn't make it. The battery is not efficient. The only positive thing is that it is cheap to maintain. It doesnt has all the filters and pumps like a normal combustion engine. This video remembers me my roadtrip of 2500 kilometers in my mercedes diesel. Mountain roads in the south of europe and high speeds in the german highway, didn't had to worry for anything since a full tank gave me 1000km range. The comfort and certainty cannot be beat

118F is insane. I don't care about anything else at that point. The scenery, the attractions, the exclusivity mean nothing when going outside is deadly.

You get much lower charging speeds above 80%. It's counterproductive to charge beyond 80% on a road trip if you don't have to. But great video! .... I picked up a Model Y LR in Dec and have had it for only 7 months now. Getting around 307 miles of implied range on the last road trip. Nice to hear about how a 10 yr old Tesla performs.

Wow your car still looks sexy.. its a 2013 with 85 battery pack ? .. After owning a 85D I discovered that pack was the largest out up until 2015 before the 2016 90 pack came along. The 85 packs unfortunatly does not have the better HV thermal system to keep them cool enough to accept the faster Super charging rates of today. So the Super charging speeds have been cut back to prevent overheat and damage.

So much for the BEV denier claims that BEV batteries "need replacing in a few years". And batteries have gotten MUCH better in recent years, and should continue to improve as more research is done on them, better chemistries are used for durability (like LFP and LFMP). And hopefully things like silicon will improve themselves in time.

Hi Henrik ! I live in northern Italy own a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range and a 6kWp solar system. All I can say is what an awesome car ! I’ll never go back to gas cars as here it costs almost 2€ a liter (that’s more than 8$ a gallon). I recharge it with my solar as much as I can !

My brothers 2013 Model S 75 requires a new battery, Price quoted by tesla $21K, Its got 129K Miles, The car would only charge upto 42%

This is a great vid, man. I have 2 chevy Bolts, but i really want a Tesla, and the ones that are affordable tend to be older Model Ss. I do wonder if i can CYA with some kond of car warranty in case of issues with the battery and powertrain. One of my Bolts is nearing 150,000 miles and still mostly drives the way it did when I bought it at 54,700.
