Free Tesla Supercharging is a fantastic way to save money of course. Who wouldn’t want free fuel?
Some Teslas have this perk but it does require an older Model to qualify. So, do these older cars still drive well with good range or have they suffered battery degradation that would render them almost useless?
Here I take you along on a day where I collect a Model S 70D and use our very S85. Our car is quite high mileage with over 100,000 miles but we certainly still use it every day. Of course normally we charge at home or in the office but when we are on a road trip we certainly make use of the free electric to keep runnings costs low.
I also explain which cars do and do not have free charging. You have to be very careful when buying as I always see a lot of falsely advertised cars for sale.
So have a watch and I hope enjoy.
Thanks for watching!

I ordered my model S 100D in January 2017, received it in March. After almost 5 1/2 years, there has only been 6% battery degradation, 335 down to 315 miles. It does have free supercharging, but that will not pass on to the next owner. Because of Teslas free software upgrades, it has all the features of a new one. Still looks new, and drives like a new car.

My S85 that I bought from you around one year ago now is still going extremely well now with 112000 miles. It has done around 16000 miles over the last 12 months. Not much has failed, 2 door handles, that's all really. CCS upgraded and eMMC replaced under warranty. No road tax and free supercharging. It's up and down to the highlands every week and rear wheel drive (with cross climates) is fine, even in winter. You are right about the purity of the real wheel drivers, my other P85D is great and technically much nicer, but the S85 has charm. And it's probably not depreciated much recently either......happy.

Bought my 2015 MS85 used last year, and it currently has over 220,000 km on the odometer. Runs very well, thanks to having had its battery replaced under warranty at around 200k km, so I've calculated that the usable capacity is 75 kWh, which easily gets me over 450km now that the temps are higher. Drives like a dream on long journey, especially! Yeah, it's got the usual Tesla issues (*ahem* door handles), but even fixing them out of warranty saves me so much money that I don't have to spend on fuel.

brilliant video. I fell in love with Tesla in 2012 in a shopping mall in the US when I set the very first time in a Model S (was one of these now rather rare 60kWh Battery pack versions if I remember correctly). was far out of my financial reach but flashed me. took me only nearly 10yrs to get one and now a Model 3. The used Models S are still quite expensive but it is a cool car.

I find your videos on the model S very helpful. I plan on buying a used one in 2023. Free supercharge, no road tax (in my country) every quarter, comfort of model S instead of a spartan ride of a new small car, and the feeling of safety. One thing I have to get confirmed is what another KZfaqr said about the model S. They are made with aluminium and have less rust than a model 3. Important in countries that use a lot of road salt in winter... Anyway, thanks for sharing your experiences.

Im in Australia, I've got a mint 2015 Model S 70 RWD. Premium package, with leather, alcantara on the dash, high fidelity audio, Enhanced Autopilot, airsuspension and lighting package. It now has 104000km on it. It has been the perfect roadtrip car for us. We've driven from Brisbane to Tasmania and back, which about a 5500km round trip. I only spent $11 on charging, because Tasmania doesn't have Superchargers. The rearwheel drive is quieter and nicer to drive than the AWD. A little bit more involved. And it has double the frunk space. Mine has MCU1 with the SD upgraded to 64gb. Will keep this car forever. There aren't many original shaped Model S' in Australia and it will keep appreciating. We're getting a used Model 3 LR alongside as soon as the Y hits our shores at the end of this year. When that happens, our S will be parked in the garage during the week and only go out on weekends and roadtrips.

Still love it! Best purchase ever. Glad I got the RWD it's just so much simpler and easy to work on and only one drive motor to worry about. No Autopilot. Less complication and 30% of my charging is Free Supercharging. Road trips take way longer but the drive is so nice and it's free. I spend my money on meals instead of gas.

Great comparison video - as always, guys... You really know exactly what your audience likes to watch. 😎 That explanation of which cars get free Supercharging and which don't was, on the face of it, dead easy - a car ordered before the end of 2016 - but, oh boy, WHAT a fly-in-the-ointment complication that issue was if the car had been latterly sold on by a Tesla Approved Used outlet...!! 😲 Surely, there must be some software 'flag' that could tell a prospective buyer whether or not a car has the free Supercharging option...? 🤔

The trip was a dream, superchargers worked great, car worked great, super responsive when required. I think I "sold" a few Teslas also en route when speaking to folks who asked about EVs/Teslas in general also!!! Unless you want to spend 10 to 20 hours dehydrating yourself or p155ing into an empty bottle then time spent charging is perfectly acceptable... time for coffee, chill out, check emails, book the eurotunnel... make some calls, chat "Tesla" to fellow geeks ;-) if it works over a 1,700 mile trip it defo works for folks daily 20mile commutes. Keep the great vids coming folks.

Another great video an 8 year old EV that has done over 100,000 miles and over 250 mile range. Absolutely kills the ideas that EV's can't do that and need new batteries. The quicker we can educate the general public the better! I tend to stop after 2 hours driving as ready for a break and charge at that time, usually 30- 40 mins and it is easy. Also I live 16 miles round trip from my petrol station and this could take anything from 20 to 40 minutes to get in, 10 mins to fill and pay (after queueing) so a loss of over an hour in general to fill the car up. Now I can arrive home with as little as 10 miles range, plug in my home charger (30 seconds) and go to bed. When I wake up I have over 220 miles range (at 80%). EV life is easy!

I recently went from Orleans to near Geneva approx. 600kms with a guy who had a diesel car both leaving at the same time. it took 15 mins longer in the Tesla as we charged while eating, so not a big difference in time for a saving of about 80 euros each way. We are lucky as we have free charging at work, so my fuel costs are very, very small, I bought it cheap at a car auction a couple of years ago and it is still worth what I paid for it. I have had 2 door handles and mcu2 upgrade as my old MCU1failed, i have also had ccs upgrade which is well worth the money, I also fixed water in the rear light myself took a couple of hours, and cost a bit of glue.

Remarkable, to be honest. Both cars are at or near the end of their battery warranties yet will be fine for another 8 years and more. Not forgetting that battery chemistries have improved well since these were built with their 18650 formats. Both achieve better efficiency than my year old VW ID.3, as well. 250 mile cars all day long. 210+ in the winter, I would expect. Cheap to run premium cars.

It now has 148.000 km on the odo, 99% of it by supercharging (degradation only 4,5%). Lately got 156 kW peak on a new V3. Last week I covered exactly 400 highway km with 85% of the battery capacity. I will drive and supercharge this dream car untill it's so broken that it can't be fixed anymore.

22:33, I Happen to have moved across the road from a supercharger, which is next to my gym and supermarket. Also have a fairly long daily commute. Free charging on an older tesla while picking up groceries or working out seems extremely attractive.

Nail on the head with that final comment. I’ve put it to people before, is your time really worth that much? It’s similar to trickle charging at home on solar for free. The car is sat there all day charging at 2kw, if I had an ICE car it would also sit there. Difference being at the end of the day I got a full tank for nothing.

It's been nearly 10 years, and my early 2013 Model S 85 has over 160k miles and about 90% battery capacity... Powertrain still drives like new. Free Supercharging is nice, but we never use it. It's going to be replaced with a new Model X because I want my wife and kids to have AEB, lane-keep, and other active safety feature of the newer Autpilot-capable cars.

Why did you never use free supercharging? No chargers around? Since it was a big deal in the time...
@ken830
@ken830 2 жыл бұрын
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 We live in San Carlos (Tesla's founding city) here in the SF Bay Area, so they are everywhere. There is a Supercharger site just a few blocks down the street... It's still *way* more convenient to charge at home. 1 or 2 seconds to reach over and plug in. We also have 3 kids, and who would want to wait around for the car to charge regularly with kids in tow? Plus, home charging is like 75-80% savings over buying gas back with gas was $4/gal, so we really don't feel the need to make that 100% savings... The difference is even greater now, obviously. We do Supercharge when doing road trips -- we used to do 6-7 trips per year to Disneyland. We haven't done that in 3 years (due to the pandemic). We will be doing a trip in a couple of weeks, but we're going to be taking the newer Model 3 Performance because of Autopilot and FSD. My Model 3 is one of the very first Performance cars built by Tesla and is early enough to have had free Supercharging included, but I gave up free Supercharging for $5k rebate during the Performance price-cut fiasco -- although I gave it all back buying FSD (missed the $2k offer). Even paying for Supercharging is worth the convenience of Autopilot and FSD on a road trip... My Model S is so early, it doesn't have Autopilot... it doesn't even have ultrasonic parking sensors... heck, it doesn't even have power-folding mirrors... It's among the first few thousand cars produced at the beginning of 2013.

I think comparing 11 years of Tesla especially when we are in the same generation is a bit bad. I think to determine the uses and value we need to wait a bit longer because I think the problem will be the same as an iPhone when your tech becomes too outdated rather than your battery degradation.

Hi Richard, Great videos, keep up the good work. A note for you - I run a 2020 Tesla Model X that has free supercharging, you need to edit your video when you say post 2017 will not have free supercharging. Also, a question for you, whatever happened to you being able to supply and fit a yoke to a Model 3, can you offer this? What is the cost?

Hi. Your X will not have free supercharging for another owner. It’s non-transferable. Make the most of it! Steering wheel yoke is now available, if you check out our “other services” page on our website www.rsev.co.uk and it then actually gets ordered via our partner in Germany and we then fit. But otherwise if you were to buy one from online we can fit it for tou

Got a Plaid and Roadster or order but why would I! Update140,000 miles still having fun, plundered Ebay every time I see a bargin basement pair of suspension parts I fit them at my own leisure, wow what a difference. The RWD cars especially the performance cars mess with the wubbery bits in suspension so what is not a MOT fail when replaced with new makes the car drive so much better, well worth doing if you can weild a spanner.

Thank you for discussing the topic I've been watching YT all day for (Free Supercharging for Life). (1) I now understand the car's time frame December, 2016 or earlier (Ordering)... meaning a 2017 model year MIGHT have it. (2) But also that if it every went back through Tesla's hands, it'll be removed. (3) That dealers or people may be deceptive in their advertising of this feature. How does one go about confirming a specific item has this on it or not? Does it show on the screen? Can a VIN check be done? Does it have to be taken to a Supercharging station and try it out? And how would I verify this from hundreds of miles away from the dealer?

Here in Norway we have an excellent infrastructure in place with over 8000 chargers dotted around the country and 91% of all new cars sold are electric. Personally I enjoy free worldwide supercharging & internet connectivity with my 2014 Tesla Model S but if I chose to upgrade to a new Tesla I can transfer that to the new vehicle at no extra charge. You can pick up a 2014 Model S with free charging for around £7500 just now after the big price drop on new models.

What is it about Supercharging that can shorten the efficiency of the battery..you mentioned it briefly? Does this still apply to “modern” Teslas and is it detrimental to cars like the Taycan that can accept 270kw speeds? Many thanks.

Even without the free supercharging the pure day to day running cost of an ev is undeniable. With octopus it costs me £45-£50 a month to do around 1600 miles in my e208, compare that to my cooper s and it’s £250 - 270. It 100% make sense FOR ME.

I have a friend with a Model S with free SC. Originally came from Norway so LH drive. Its quite a nice perk and he doesn't have a charger at home preferring to charge at the local SC. OTOH it doesn't cost too much to charge at home off peak so is it really saving much money unless you are doing really high mileage?

Last April I bought a 2016 facelift S70 with 117k and now 12k later I can tell I don’t feel bad about it well actually I am obsessed with it the way that my wife is getting jealous!😅Range haven’t changed 194/244miles, since the energy price hike I use only free supercharger as I live 5 min away from one. I only charge it from 20-30% to 50-60% and only charge it higher if we go anywhere further. Only thing I spent on it was a CCS upgrade and recently they changed the eMMC and made the frunk latch easier to close both free. I had a 2017 AWD loaner for 10 days and it was a joy to drive my RWD again as it has a better steering feel. It’s advisable to put the steering to sport mode on motorways. Personally I save roughly £2500+/year not buying fuel. My only complaint about the 2016 MS is that it comes without the repeater cameras and sentry mode which would need MCU2 upgrade. I bought two repeater on eBay from Model 3 and I can tell it is compatible, all Teslas using the same repeater, and now my S70 has a newer sleeker look. I “upgraded” one more thing I bought a 2channel LTE BlackVue dash cam so now I got my “sentry mode”!😅☝️ I have to mention that last year I took it to Richards to re spray a few wheels and they had a look and fixed one of my door which was keep opening, it was something with the door handle mechanism. Ever since I keep a RSEV sticker on as an ethereal gratitude for their excellent service.🙏

I purchased my 66 plate Model S 90d from you 18 months ago (stunning Matt silver wrapped). Free supercharging is such a bonus, especially on an 800 mile trip through France!! Interested to see your economy on these cars around 250-260wh/m. I struggle to get under 300 even when trying to drive as economically as possible. I do have the 21inch wheels so would that be a factor? Was starting to think a 66 plate was ‘getting old’ even with just 36,600 miles on the clock but this video suggests there is a lot more life left in these cars still today. Realistic range on my S is around 200 miles which in real life experience isn’t an issue. Apart from a costly failed heat pump cooler which was a £1300 repair from Tesla the car has been fantastic. Considering a CCS upgrade and MCU2 upgrade, do you feel it is worth the investment on those early Model S cars? Great video and looking forward to seeing more from these older S’s

I bought the 70D that was in the video and have done over 10,000 miles - saving a massive amount of money compared to my previous ICE car. I am currently sat at a supercharger having left Exeter with 98% charge, drove for 3 hours 40 minutes, travelled 212.4 miles and arrived with 8% charge left. Had I continued driving I would probably have got just over 230 miles from a car which is rated at 220 miles. 56.6 kWh and 266 Wh/mi. Very impressed and so glad I bought it 😊.
