In South Florida, residents cannot deny that climate change has started to impact their everyday lives. From king tides, to stronger storms, to hotter days, there's irrefutable evidence that residents are already feeling the effects from climate change. But for some residents, climate change is expressing itself in a surprising new way: development pressures.
The term climate gentrification has recently been coined to try to explain how climate is impacting the traditional gentrification cycle. In Miami, high elevation areas are now undergoing high demand, and putting pressure on the communities who have lived there for decades. With these higher elevation areas in demand, residents are being pushed out to lower lying areas that would be more susceptible to climate change and sea level rise. However, not everyone is convinced that this cycle of climate gentrification is actually happening in the City of Miami.
This video takes an in-depth look at whether climate gentrification is already shaping Miami, what that would mean for residents, and what the city is prepared to do about it.
