Experiment 1 didn't go as planned and I will re-do it ASAP. A few interesting things we observed:
Tank 2 - fish and fish food (no liquid fertz) Grew almost as well as Tank 1 (+liquid fetz, no fish no fish food) Reds plants seemed to be darker in Tank 2.
Tank 1 did visually beat tank two in overall biomass, especially the green Rotala rotundifolia and baby tears. Growth is Tank 2 seemed to be more compact.
NO3- and PO4 were never detected in the water column of Tank 2
Tank 2 - Had more green spot algae most likely due to higher limitation of PO4.

@@Nutakins against spot algae dose 1 ppm per actual water volume. Up to 3 ppm shouldn't cause problems as long as nitrates and potassium is not low.

This is the Mike I know! I understand that producing more “exciting” videos draws more attention, but I really think you should put out more experiments, reviews, and explanations. I know videos with titles like “NEW FISH” and “DISASTER” will get more views, but you should really flex that aquarium science muscle; you are really fine tuned in this hobby.

This is exactly what I do. I feed heavily and do big water changes. So left over food and or fish poop makes my plants thrive without co2 or fertilizer. 🙂👐

I love this style of video where you get into the weeds about the chemistry. A lot of times when caring for my tank I feel like I'm just following instructions without really understanding what I'm doing. As I'm sure you know, it's tough to find reliable information about specifics on the web. I've think I've learned the most from your videos simply because I trust that you know what you're doing and you always explain the why's behind what you do. Looking forward to more in the future! Btw, I'd love to understand more about ammonia at low ph levels, different treatments for sick fish, and brown algae. Thanks again!

I am left with the question, "Do we really need to be using ferts". There are a growing number of hobbyists on line that have tanks with no ferts, CO2 and low-cost lighting and have great aquariums.

That highly depends on the source water. If it contains nothing, it will grow nothing in the long term.

This is quickly becoming my favourite segment! i'm always curious about the effect of having surface agitation/flow on plant growth in a NON CO2 tank. Some had argued surface movement gas out CO2, some has argued that gas exchange is important for non C02 tank. I can see arguments for both sides.

Loved this. I think you should do this type of experiment several times with different variables. I would like to see you do it again with better balance of nutrients in the fertilizer side and more livestock and food in the non-fertilizer side so you have more N and P. Another one would be same or similar with inert gravel substrate. I know we get N and P from fish food but I think other nutrients are lacking. I think if you are able to get N and P the same in both tanks you will see a difference in growth because of the lack of other nutrients from the fish food.

In this case, qualitative results are better than quantitative. It’s just plain silly to operationalize aesthetic results as anything quantitative. What would we use? Pixel RGB values for photos of the tanks? Plant mass as you suggest? The thing is, dry plant mass doesn’t necessarily mean the plant has grown in a way that we find aesthetically desirable.

You could have mineralization occurring within the tank with fish and fish food that allows the organic forms of the nutrients to go back to an inorganic form usable by the plants. This is what we do in aquaponic systems except we remove all the fish waste and break it down and add it back into the system after it is broken down. I mention this because I see the solids building up in the substrate and if those areas are still receiving oxygen the bacteria can break those nutrients down and release them back into the substrate.

This video is so useful! I'm always wondering about the decay adding nutrients for my plants and how having both fertilizer and detritus affect growth. Especially since I'm irregular with my manual fertilization.

I hope you can redo a version of this with stem and rhizome plants to avoid the substrate adding nutrients to the water. If you want rooted plants, then use pots with rockwool that you know doesn't have any fertilizer hidden in it.

I know I'm late to the party but this seems to go with observations that Tom Barr has made regarding algae. He contends that no excess of any one nutrient is to blame for any particular algae but rather that algae grows when the plants aren't growing to their full capacity. With nitrate consumption decreasing when phosphate was depleted, obviously it looks like plant growth in general slowed and algae filled in the gaps. If phosphorus was the limiting factor that slowed down the growth in the fish food tank, that would account for both the slight underperformance in growth and also the consistent presence of algae. Super interesting, I'm subscribing for this type of content for sure

Really cool video!! Very interesting, and Im interested in seeing more!! I always cycle my tanks by adding around the amount of food that I will be feeding the first round of fish until ammonia hits zero, and then a big water change, and then add fish. Maybe you could do another tank with no fish but adding .2g of fish food and letting it break down for the ferts? hope ya can understand what im saying. Good luck!!

Assumeing you use a food thats full of all the vitamins and minerals, youd think the tank would have everything it needs. Over time anyway. The plants absorb the nutrients as biomass. You could just cut everything down to the same length. And weigh the diffrence between the two tanks

Nice informative vid! I had to smile when u explained quantitative vs qualitative. I’m in health care and a very common lab is the pregnancy test and sometimes I have to explain the difference. Lol. Quantitative measures what levels of the pregnancy hormone are present. The qualitative just lets us know if the hormone is actually present. 😂 sorry. I just had to nerd out.

Excellent, very interesting indeed. Fish food ---> fish waste = manure i.e. plant food. Good substrate with micro and macro nutrients lasts months if not years. Use kiln dried sand or horticultural grit next time - and have a control tank and don't vary the amount of commercial liquid fertiliser added, keep it consistent. Well planted tanks with, soil based substrate, CO2 and adequate filtration, rarely if ever, need big water changes (touch of the Walstad method but with CO2). E.I. and lots of water changes are just too much work for me - I'm a bit lazy (and old). Fish foods vary, some contain a lot more Phosphate than others. In heavily stocked, heavily fed tanks, floating plants can be amazing at taking out Nitrate and Phosphate. Duckweed, Hornwort, Indian Fern and Salvinia all work - Duckweed, however, if the water is rich in macro nutrients, will take over in no time at all, so I don't advise its use. I suspect, your experiment repeated with my suggested 'tweaks', you might find you need to add Iron/Magnesium and perhaps boron to the fish food only tank - after months, not weeks that is. A bit of a guess of course. In plant only, or very lightly stocked tanks, as well as Chelated Iron I have used separately with apparent success (not scientifically trialled) a terrestrial plant food for Streptocarpus plants - it is NPK but with bigger hit of Potassium (7-10-25) and some Iron and Magnesium. I think the big missing parameter here is the important role of micro-nutrients that might have been in the liquid fertilizer (not sure what was used) but are not present in fish food. Metals like Potassium, Zinc, Calcium, Molybdenum, ect are not going to be present in the fish food/waste but presumably should be in a commercial liquid fertilizer.

Where the hell did you hear that? Most carbon-based life forms from plants to animals have similar nutritional requirements, and all of the minerals, metals, chemicals, etc. that plants need are going to be present in fish food due to the variety of whole foods used to make them. Think of fish food as a broad spectrum fertilizer, which in fact, is actually more likely to have everything the plants require than inorganic fertilizers. The general approach to fish+plant tanks is to use fish food as the main fertilizer and use inorganic fertilizers as individual elements, such as potassium or phosphorous for example, to target specific nutrient deficiencies if plants are using a lot of one particular nutrient.

If you would have added more fish food in tank 2 and nitrates and phosphates would have been detectable would the algae grow and does algae stop plant growth because algae grows instead of the plant growth?

I don't see the difference in the color chart a lot of the time. I use Colorblind Pal on my phone to get a more quantitative result, instead of relying on my eyes. I use it with the same background under the same lighting every time to reduce inconsistency errors. Maybe you could try to use it too?

Of course. A lot of frozen food is high in potassium in their liquid. Fertilizer us easier to dose, but since a very wide range from 1 - 5 ppm is fine, it can be done.

I think you should try this with 4 tanks: 1) No fish and no ferts - this is your control 2) Fish & food only 3) Fertilizer only 4) Fish food (w fish) and ferts Also I would try to get multiple plants of the same species for at least one or two of the stem plants so you had more plants to compare. It's worth noting as you said that fertilizers aren't made equal so you could try something to compare fertilizers as well. This is why they say to test your soil and see what fertilizer you need to add in gardening - even soils are all different. I think this applies to aquariums as well. I'm also curious if you compared growth rate in different soil types as a separate experiment.... I wonder if potting them would affect it too.

An experiment of this type should be duplicated at medium light and low light. The difference in growth with different demand plants would be interesting.

Put a known amount in some water, like 2 ppm and test if the kit is working at all.

I never add fertilizers after the initial set up/planting of the tank way before fish are added. My plants get their food from my fish and fish food. I do not feed a lot. I also use a grow light for plants made for aquariums. The problem i seem to be having the last month or so is nitrate levels being up some and light red algea

Plants can't absorb nitrate as long as potassium and phosphate are low. Then the algae do this instead. Commonly fish food has no potassium.

@@wendyhenschel. Fertilizer only. You could use wood ash, but thatis just another form of fertilizer. The cheapest fertilizer are mineral salts you can buy. Monopotassium Phosphate might be exactly what you need to complement. Then get a mikro-nutrient fertilizer, dose it at least once a month or during water changes as low as possible.

@@wendyhenschel. I did... 'Monopotassium phosphate' For a mikro fertilizer I use Aqua Rebell Micro Basic, but any fertilizer that only has the mikro-nutrients and very little potassium will be suitable. I suggest to avoid any fertilizers that don't say the amount of their potassium ingredient.

@@jake3551 it's a rhetorical question. I'm setting up an aquaponics system and this gives me a general idea of how much fertilizer even a lightly stocked tank can produce. I don't want to add ferts because it's a waste of money and I don't want to do water changes because it's like pouring a healthy plant down the drain.
