Some people say they "cycle" their tanks by just putting fish food in it to create ammonia. I don't like that idea because it's a race for good and bad bacteria. I think in an established tank, things like detritis worms and seed shrimp will assure the bad bacteria does not win the race by breaking the food down mostly in their guts. As far as feeding the fish to spike the nutrients in the tank... I don't know if I can feed my fish the right ratios of protein:phosphates:potassium that I want for my plants. So I buy potassium fertilizer, tracer minerals and just feed them plenty of protein/calcium rich foods. PS they call it granular convection when big rocks wind up higher up and smaller rocks/sand winds up at the bottom.

I like the amount of detail in this video, the breakdown of all nutrients, etc. Fertilizers should be used when something's missing (of course that can be adjusted). Some plants are more hungry for certain elements than others. For example when growing fully submerged, Hygrophilla Corymbosa, Siamensis and especially Pinnatifida need more Potassium than other plants. Sometimes I also get Nitrogen deficiency, but usually adding more leaf matter solves that (or feeding more vegetables or young nettle leaves). Some fish are like a vacuum and usually it's bottom dwellers, but they can't overfeed on plant matter (or the algae wafers in the video).
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 ай бұрын
Totally. I had to edit out that part and all my calculations of nutrients ... because there are endless combos, and its probably boring to anyone who cant understand what i was infering anyhow lol. But i specifically run low only on potassium, and nitrates in all tanks other than live food tanks...those phosphates have crashed 2x in...because manufactured food has so much sodium and phosphates for preservation...we never see it lacking in most people's tanks

You have confirmed the evolution of my own thoughts. All in One ferts were causing the phosphates to creep up extremely high....and I couldnt keep nitrates lower than 40 even trying to do werkly water changes in mature tanks. My conclusion is thst there is no way to balance nutrients in any manner with the All in Ones even with heavily planted tanks. Also, anyone with harder water please note.... It's much harder for plants to process phosphates in harder water than soft.
@Fishtory

Thank you for deducing this info. I was worried that i may not have said it plain enough, that cheaper foods or too much food, can also play roles in algae, phosphates and nitrates and disolved Oxygen etc etc. Also, thanks for mentioning the phosphates and high gh/kh issue. I did a hour long video on phosphates and the phosporus cycle in the aquarium, but almost no one has watched it lol.

this needs more views and likes 👍. i live in south east asia and have a 2 year old aquarium using clay pebbles as substrate which has 0 nutrient. the aquarium has no filter and only a bubbler that dissolves oxygen from the surface of water. i grow easy plants like pothos, peace lily and duckweed. all the nutrients come from fish food and fish waste and snail waste. however recently ive noticed my peace lily leaves start to turn brownish on the edges. im guessing its lacking potassium.

Good stuff. In this hobby I think you really have to be willing to experiment to know what you NEED vs what simply makes things easier. I've been growing plants for years in just sand without ferts, root tabs etc (just fish food/waste). I finally set up a dirted tank, capped with sand, a few months ago and yep the plants seem to be growing faster. I might try some aquasoil or ferts in my next setup but I know I don't need them.

Excellent content. Thanks, and of course we all feed our fish, and their faecal material must be the major source of additives to the substrate and plant column - though snails must be a very important factor of course, anyone out there really scientific, up to analysing the nutrient content of snail faeces of snails feed on fish food? I have long abandoned adding a classic NPK macro fertiliser on a regular basis, though I do sometimes add Potassium separately. Potash in the substrate might be a good idea when setting up, and in my experience too many tabs for roots are too rich in Nitrate. I do add Iron, my tap water is hard and Iron seems beneficial, though I know some think it can contribute to excess algae. I can also get plenty of Nitrate in my tap water during the summer! But honestly, I find the easier plants get along fine with an inert substrate so long as it is fine - like blasting sand - and fish waste, and we use sensible filtration systems and good light - cheap DIY store lights seem fine, though maybe not as efficient in PAR per watt. For plants like Macrandra Rotala things become more complicated and then I get myself into issues with algae, poor growth, excess growth, CO2, adequate Nitrate in the water column...and it all gets quite demanding.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 ай бұрын
I think you and i are coming to several of the same conclusions. That potassium should be the main nutrient deficiency followed by additive nitrates ... when you have a fully mature aquarium substrate and micro ecosystem of sorts. Also... there were reports on worms, and snails and the nutrients they use.... but not on aquatic species specifically ( that ive seen yet)

Hi, sir. I need your cooperation. About a year ago, I did setup a tank for breeding caridina shrimps. Cause I didn't have access to ADA, Benibachi, or Shirakura soil, I chose the Dennerle brand and, failed. I'm pretty sure the reason I failed is just using this soil. Now, I have access to ADA soil. What do you think about using a top filter, securing its entrance with a sponge and pouring the ADA soil into the top filter and passing water over the soil and bringing the pH level to the ideal state? Meanwhile, the use of bacteria, within seven days, to neutralize the releasing of ammonia through the ADA soil

I dont think they are, because they are turning Brown on the stems. The Java Ferns, are doing OK, im waiting on my Eco Complete to come in. so i right now as of tonight, im using Dirt from my yard, where they dug up the water line to the house, it has sand mixed in, the water im using came from a running pipe of spring water, i have the Dirt/ sand mixed , i also mixed in some multicolor grave i picked 2 -5lb for like 6 bucks at local fish/pet store .. the plants are in the substrate mixed and the Java Moss is laying on the gravel .. im using the standard light that is a LED tripod flood out that is in a light socket. It has some decent foods for flake foods, but to me the proof is in the fact that some fish wont eat flakes...some will only eat pellets with enriched minerals, some will only eat frozen foods...and last but most rare...some only eat live foods. So there definitely is a difference between the types of food...but for a general small fish community tank its fine

@@Fishtory My Rainbow fish and Multifasciatus like it and have been eating it for a while now. They seem to be thriving now for a couple of years. I was just concerned about long term effects but I'm probably past that now anyways.

I'm don't think when fish metabolize food any of it can disappear that would defy the laws of physics. The only thing that can dissipate is calories. And those would just be burned off as heat. I can't imagine how potassium would just disappear?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory Ай бұрын
It doesn't disappear, my point is that it becomes part of the fish...some then gets passed as waste etc, cells die, scales fall off. But if you then remove the adult fish when it dies, you removed the calories and nutrients as well vs. If you bury them or let them Rot in the tank....then theoretically everything is still there but in a multitude of different chemicals and compounds

I heard that you have to gutload your feeder fish before feeding them to carnivore fish
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 ай бұрын
Indeed, thats the way to do it... but gold fish are pretty gnarly, guppies and minnows or ricefish are far better for the carnivor fish

Crushed coral or aragonite added will also help if you want more alkaline water rather than just more TDS /HARD water

I was taught by a master. My tanks really require nothing. Every now and than I do a water change. I’d rather not touch my tanks. It’s all human error when fish die, shrimp Or plants. Either people have to many tanks, or there just doing it for KZfaq fame and freebies. Most can’t even cycle a tank. Or no how to even place anything. Hell I still see people with heaters laying on the bottom thinking that it fully water proof. Boy are they wrong. Or better yet complain about a hob, because they don’t maintain it. 😂. But hey aslong as your fish room is thriving why even say anything. People gunna do what they think is right and not look around for mistakes from others.

@@checkthefishbox8556yep, there are a lot of fully submersible heaters. Frankly, I *strongly* prefer them - I avoid heaters with dials on top even if they claim to be as that's a failure point that can lead to water ingress (then water+electricity issues) but fully sealed submersible heaters with no moving parts? There's no reason to think the top is going to be less waterproof than the bottom... And when you're doing that, with a horizontal heater about an inch off the substrate (don't want to risk it being buried) you don't need to worry about the heater during water changes. No chance of breaking a heater because you forgot to turn it off first.
