A common question when dealing with electrical appliances is: Is generator power safe for electronics? Are you worried about how electricity from your generator can affect your electronics? Before charging your devices, it is important to know if the power produced by a generator is safe for them. This article looks at some simple steps you can take to ensure your devices are safe when charging from a generator. We think it is a good idea to know the basics about generator safety and how to use them safely, during running your computers or televisions on generators.

I’ve powered everything in my home with a gas generator including a 65in oled tv, computers, and a Cpap machine.

Idiotic video that repeats and repeats the needs for a generator......but half-way through I still see no discussion on the purity of power issue....just some idiotic comments to check if the generator output is FUSED ! ( ?...really..???)..and such other nonsense...like capacity or general safety precautions. Yes...safety is a proper concern but the TITLE of this vid is the danger to electronics being fed, and we had hoped some info of WHICH type generators,and which electronics being fed...are ok or not OK to match. Is the generator power "clean" vs "Dirty" as to the produced sine wave...that should be the focus...and THEN.....does the electronics you are supporting allow whatever is being produced without damage....that is the core question.....didn't find an answer here. The advantages of inverter-style generators was briefly mentioned ( vs open-frame generators), but it was never 100% established whether or not they are absolutely necessary and then again......doesn''t talk to WHICH electronics being fed are risky in this area. and the mention of Generac and Honda is only an advertisement. Harbor Freight and Generac are both made by subcontracted companies in China and if you look carefully....use many same parts, etc, etc...... totally useless vid as to discussing the title topic.

The same concept was described 5 times (literally) in the first 30 seconds of this video.

@@101perspective ...coming more-and-more to the conclusion that inverter style.....while "better"....is not critically-necessary to avoid "damage" to your owned home-equipment....a "fear-tactic" to make you upgrade ( ie "buy" !) to the newer inverters. Seems if you have a regular unit with good AVR and overall voltage control to avoid spikes....you should be OK. I'm not 100% "there" yet....but that's where I'm heading. I'd like to see real feedback from consumers where a good normal generator caused all the problems we are being warned against. So far, everyone speaking about it says they bought an inverter to "prevent" damage to "delicate" electronics....but have not seen reports of folks saying they dod this BECAUSE a normal unit fried their stuff. In other words, they became scared because of all the repeated warnings that it could happen because of the sales-hype, but no one reports back that's what actually happened...that caused them to buy inverter style for that reason.

He should have addressed the importance of a 'PURE SINE WAVE' vs a 'MODIFIED SINE WAVE'. And as one commenter stated: "Inverter generator is best".

Oh, the video doesn't even go into that? I couldn't get past the first couple minutes... it was nothing but filler. Thought maybe someone below suffered through it.

Inverter generator is the best

There are a lot more items that a 'Modified Sine Wave' can damage. Brushless DC motors are in 'NEWER' refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines... LED TV's and Microwaves do not act well w/MSW... I'm looking for something to change my OLD generator to produce a 'PURE SINE WAVE'. INVERTER generators are more expensive; but highly recommended.

Bought an Anker Solis F3800 Battery gen. Cannot be charged with older gas gens. Did you find any inverter to pure sine wave?

@@tommills8092 No. And I've learned a lot in the last 11 months. Your purchase of the Anker is a wise move. I've concluded the best move for me is to get at least 3, ideally 6, 5.2kWh Server Rack Batteries. Since I already have a 48 volt system, an OutBack Max 80, and a Spartan 3300 watt inverter, with 2300 watts of Solar. Thanks for the reply. Take care and good luck.

On another site, the guy noted use of a Tripp-Lite line conditioner that worked well on many electronics like a desk top and new fridges. Waiting for a response from the mfg.@@chasmarischen4459

I have a goodman furnace, and it will not run on a generator. L1 and L2 both are charged 120volts. Need Hot 120volts and a NEUTRAL!
@Idnrntigzzz
@Idnrntigzzz Жыл бұрын
The furnace wants to see a neutral-ground bond, and you’re probably using a floating neutral generator. Make a male plug with no cord that bonds neutral and ground together, connect it anywhere on that circuit, and the furnace should ignite.

Is a generator safe for your electronics? It's important to know if it is safe to use a generator with your electronics. You should know if it is safe. But is a generator safe for your electronics? Electronics are sensitive so will they be safe with a generator? YEAH! GET ON WITH IT ALREADY! JFC

Basic: Most electrical devices will NOT care if the electrical power is perfect. A regular generator will ALWAYS be above or below the usual frequency (50 or 60 Hz), which is "good enough". But certain electronics, like UPSes will NOT work with generator power, unless the generator produces pure syne wave output!
