A master's degree sure sounds impressive, but is grad school really worth the student debt and time taken away from work experience? Here's how to weigh the pros and cons of grad school.

One criticism. Most jobs you can get without a grad-school degree, especially in the social and natural sciences, don't have many rungs you can move ahead. Often times, in order to actually get on the ladder, you need the degree first.

It depends on your field....I think it's worth it specially in engineering courses, ideally if you have a big company backing up your thesis and project of research. Else your just learning and or discovering something nobody wants to hire you for

Dear AJ+, I really like your videos, which are usually very informative, progressive and also entertaining videos. I have been a subscriber for a few months and I haven't found a video that I didn't like up until today when I saw this video... I believe that going to Grad School can serve many different purposes and goals in life, which are not always related to increasing your salary. Maybe if you're only talking about professional degrees like a JD, this argument might hold up, but if you're talking about academic degrees, then it's another story. I think that most people that are pursuing an academic graduate degree, such as a MA and a PhD, are studying to learn how to do research and their purpose cannot be reduced to only an increase in salary. Lots of people pursuing these graduate degrees are motivated by their thirst for knowledge through research and teaching and find the academic setting to be engaging, dynamic and full of opportunities to learn and explore your curiosity.

Pretty sure you missed the whole point of the video. If your going to incure all that student loan debt, make sure it is worth it. Read between the lines.

+jujupaixonete In a perfect world, pursuing your academic interests in graduate school simply out of a "thirst for knowledge" is laudable. However, in the real world where middle class wages have been stagnant for decades, one must take the financial aspect into account. Under these circumstances, going deep into debt in order to learn the intricacies of Latin, Underwater Basket Weaving or Library Studies just isn't a good idea.
@stesit

+jujupaixonete I think there is a distinction that needs to be made between jobs that need and don't need grad school. If you want to be an academic, doctor, pharmacist, etc. you need to go for your career. However, most business jobs and some lawyer jobs, you don't need it. For those people, the video would apply. For them, a job position isn't opened up, rather, growth prospects MAY be opened up. That is when the cost benefit analysis would apply. Does this help a little?

+jujupaixonete I agree with your post. You can't really compare someone going to grad school for a law degree with someone pursuing a PhD in physics or in linguistics. There are different reasons that people go to grad school, and it's not always about increasing your future paycheck. I also didn't like that this video didn't mention a happiness factor. There are people who are willing to take on debt if they can pursue their real dreams and goals. And in this economy and job market, a stable career isn't guaranteed for any profession.
@merrickbryan85
@merrickbryan85 8 жыл бұрын
TheRealityofFake once again this is directed at the people looking to attempt to increase their pay check and further their career through a Masters Degree. Is taking on more debt on top of their current undergrad student loans reasonable, when the ends may not justify the means. The reason they didn't include the "happiness factor" you are looking for is because that is not the point of this particular video. It's a 2 min video...they didn't intend and try to cover "ALL" angles. Damn people are so dense.

***** first let me say I lo e your name! Miyazaki is amazing, and I agree with that the paths to get these different types of aids or money is hard and is not widely publicized. I agree that community college should be free, but like in a lot of European countries and else where university should be subsidized, and made cheaper. That is real investment in education, and it starts when Americans become unafraid of taxes. My Uncle and Aunt in Belgium went to university for 2000 total a year if that. it's because education is a right which it is. That's why so many places have such turmoil, an uneducated populace is a powder keg, because people aren't taught to analyze things for their own.

Going to grad school should also be a question of "do you want to"! This video entirely ignores the value of education as character-building and an enjoyable pursuit for knowledge. Higher education shouldn't only be a means of employment but an intellectually fulfilling time in one's life.

+YesEthan Wealthy people do get degrees in arts, which is a problem because that just makes low-income/poor people less likely to pursue arts & at a disadvantage in the field. As a theatre and dance major - who is also 1st gen and from a low-wage/low-income household - It's disappointing and disgusting to see how few of us "poor" kids are represented here AND are DISCOURAGED to get into the arts... Something needs to be done about that - students should be able to study whatever the hell they want in college, DESPITE their socioeconomic class, & there is something FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG with the U.S. higher education system when only the rich kids get to do and study what they want; meanwhile, students in Europe don't even HAVE college tuition...

+Lucus Kane Normally, I would agree with you, but grad school isn't for everybody. High school = everyone. Bachelors degree/specialty school = nearly everyone. Grad school is for further specialization in a particular field. Not everyone needs that. And for those that don't need it, it should be a cost-benefit analysis. Just my opinion: feel free to tell me I'm wrong.

LelLaden In today's US of A, if your goal in life(education) is money and a rich comfortable life, you're better off robbing a bank or becoming a WS trader then robbing the government. I understand how the thought of paying off debt your whole life would be overwhelming, and I sympathize.
@Lucuskane
@Lucuskane 8 жыл бұрын
StSitu We need more educated people than ever, even just enough to keep the government running for the people would do. The country is losing the government to a few wealthy people and companies who consider themselves citizens. In this system, as you said, first doctorates, masters and eventually bachelors will become scare, respectively. As evidence by, the exponential trend in tuition. I agree its a cost-benefit analysis, but that is a short term analysis with short term benefits. I will say it again, if you really want to learn, middle finger to the cost, then go learn it. Society will benefit in the long term.
