We should stop thinking about standing out or fitting in, just do what makes yourself happy and stop comparing yourself to others.

I loved living in Japan. They speak with their eyes. And they are perfectly willing to have a silent conversation with you. It was amazing for me, a person that highly values manners, to be there and be so comfortable. When manners are held at a premium, you can empathize with people very easily and do so much!.

I was always different from others . It was hard . Really hard in school , jobs, ect…. Trust me keep going . I’m on the other side now at 40 . It’s great to stand out . Just be yourself always no matter what . Follow your soul

A random Japanese passing by. What you have talked about Japanese culture is really spot on. Average Japanese people are not so mentally ready for anything unusual for them, and it tends to uncover their insecurities. This act of revelation is considered impolite and sometimes offensive. Since Japan is a rather emotion-driven society, doing down-to-the-point communication is very hard for both sides of conversation. I believe this is a fundamental flaw in my society so I’m currently trying to figure out how to send a clear message without causing too much emotional side effects.

I think if you try fit in. All your energy put into things you don’t wanna do. If you standout you can explore yourself. As long as you’re happy with yourself. Miracle happens when you’re aline with universe and your purpose.

This one is very interesting. I just came back to Japan to visit my family and I have moved to Canada almost 27 years ago. I feel I am very Canadian sometime and I feel I am very Japanese some other time. You are right about your environment shapes your personality. I am gay and I was not happy at all when I was in Japan. As the matter of fact, I hated Japan the fact this was the country that didn’t allow me to be who I was, and I was trying hard to change who I was. Yet 27 years later, I feel it is impossible to change who I am. I think the best thing is to make peace with yourself instead of fighting. I use to hate who I was I wanted to be someone else. Now I am happy who I am. It is a continuous journey to discover. Thanks for putting this video. It makes me think.

This is so true study for more than 20 years if you have a professional degree then get married then get fat and be unhappy. Some people are still alive but died in their 30s or 40s. They just have a routine and are so unhappy

My experience in Japan was the opposite. I found many people to be outgoing and welcoming. So many people went out of their way to help me, even though there was a language barrier. Maybe it was just my experience, but I have a friend who would say the same based on her trip.

This video is great. I have been trying to fit in with others all my life so far. I’m scared of being judged and being abandoned for being different than others around me. In the process of doing that long-term, I became a people pleaser and I lost sight of who I really am. At the end of the the day, as long as you are okay with yourself, the opinions of the world doesn’t matter. At all. To all the people who feel like they are different and do not belong to anywhere, just be yourself and do you. Being yourself is the ultimate filter, which will reveals who are your true friends and it will attract people with the same mentality as yours. You are different, and that’s why you win. Do not let anything or anyone, especially yourself, to strip you of who you are. Cheers ❤

I'm glad to see that you interviewed Takashi! Recently he interviewed LGBTQ+ people in Japan. That is one group that completely stands out in Japan and requires real courage in order to simply walk out the door every day and be true to oneself. In this case it is better to stand out as long as it is physically safe. How about interviewing LGBTQ+ folks, asking them the stand out/fit in question?

Same in Sweden here, there is some thing called consensus culture, that is one reason people are depressed, i grew up in africa eritrea, was the very confident and every one knew me, but in sweden my life turned over, after my studies its time to move to vancouver BC or USA. Scandanavia is full of mental illness.

There should always be some balance between the two just like anything in life!! A well-balanced between being stand out and conformity is a way for society to progress and have some stability. This is how life should work. That being said though I have to say I am not a huge fan of Japan because it's a very very very hierarchical country and the whole society and culture are highly structured based on seniority, education, experience, hometown, gender, class, ethnicity, and much more. It is almost like a military-run society by older people with their seniority and experience. Whereas in the U.S. and Canada, what matters most is your abilities and potential, and results no matter how young or what your race, gender, religion, or what you look alike!! Nothing matters in Canada and the U.S. except what you can do and the positive results you can provide. In Japan and in many Asian countries, a lot of talented and skillful people are suppressed and bullied because the people who have power over them do not want them to succeed because they fear they will be taken over by them and fear losing power over them!! It's all politics!! So, I agree with the host in this video that I really hate it when talented and gifted people who have a lot of potential to become great and successful are simply castigated by society simply because of this unfair hierarchical and structured system in order for them to maintain their status quo. It is a really unfair system that lacks progress!! if you want to know the truth. I believe everything in life should be based on merits and hard work and talent and qualifications regardless of who you are!! Do you understand what I am saying here??? Stand on the outside looking in. You'll see boring, follow the leader. Stay outside. More fun.

Interesting philosophical question. I think standing out is when you attract attention or gain recognition for something that you do outside the cultural norm. But here in California, almost everybody is doing something very unique and different, and that sort of self expression is part of the culture. So when we're all doing it, nobody actually stands out. In order to stand out here, you really have to be either a global visionary like Elon Musk or an obnoxious loudmouth like Donald Trump. And is that a worthwhile goal per se? I would say it's not. Just be your unique self, and if at some point in time that involves standing out, then accept it graciously and without an inflated ego. And know when to hang back and let others stand out.

Whether or not pursuit of traveling (which is - different from being unique, btw) and putting off the burden of an energy consuming job is a good choice can only be evaluated years and years after a person chooses to do so. Perhaps you should keep track of a everyone of the people you interviewed and check in with them all in 30 years. Also, find a control group of young people who are pursuing the more direct path of "good schools, good job, marriage...etc..." Then in 30 years try and compare the groups and see if happiness is a function of "being unique" or a function of individual character traits or LUCK.

Sometimes people treat you a certain way, not out of harm or being rude… but to deter from the perception of your race. People have to remember that cinema/media depicts how our race is perceived to everyone else. Not everyone knows which side of corruption your values may lie.

Be yourself and do not let anyone guilt trip you into changing yourself unless you are harming someone.
