5 жыл бұрынWhy are oranges called Chinas in Puerto Rico? We went to the El Festival de la China Dulce in Las Marias, Puerto Rico to find out.
Las Marias is a small town in the mountains of the west side of the island. At the festival, we tried Mavi a traditional fermented beverage of Puerto Rico made with the bark of the Mavi tree.
We talk about fair foods in Puerto Rico like Bacalaitos, alcapurrias, pinchos, arañitas, tostones and more. You’ll also see a variety of local oranges and orange products, from frappes, sponge cakes (bizcocho), cookies, jam, and more.

We won't change. Puerto Ricans have high pride of who we are. Not even 120 years of being an American territory, we have ever changed. No transculturation occured. We are a social phenomenon for sociologist observers. We have kept defending & loving our heritage & culture. We will keep our way of speaking Spanish which is mixed by regions with Spanish predominant andaluz & canarian pronunciation, ladino & corsicans words from our ancesters. We keep our customs as high value not negotiable.

I born and raised in PR, just moved to the mainland 4 years ago and when I see videos from PR its so nostalgic. Sometimes as a Puerto Rican we dont appreciate our beautiful island until we move. Glad to see you guys enjoying the tropical life.

Es maví o mabí con acento en la i, es una bebida fermentada de la Corteza del árbol de maví . Aquí cualquier excusa es buena para hacer una fiesta, hay festivales de todo, Festival de la pana, del mangó, del guineo, de la novilla, del pescado, el festival del frío en Adjuntas(aunque no lo crean hace frío en invierno en esos pueblos de la montaña). Les recomiendo si aun están en Puerto Rico para junio/ julio el festival de las flores en Aibonito.🌸🌼

Thanks for another great video. My husband is from the Dominican Republic and he calls cake bizcocho. I learned Spanish by self study so I learned the word pastel for cake. It is very interesting to discover the different words used depending on the country/region

We in the carribean call cake biscocho , but do NOT say bizcocho in Mexico. It has a totally different meaning from a female part pf the body.

When oranges first came to the merchandise ports of PR, they came in wooden big boxes printed with the word China. The locals started calling these fruits as China. For Puerto Ricans there is a difference between naranjo and china. China is the sweetest.

You beat me to it. Im actually from Las Marias. Thats exactly the reason Boricuas call naranjas chinas. I always thought that naranjas was a different fruit. When I moved to the US and heard every other spanish speaking perso. Call it naranja I was so confused.

I am not sure if you are aware by know but orange color is translated as china, although naranja color-wise is a synonym like rojo and colorado, no differences there. Also it common to name different oranges by their place of origin or where they were being shipped from. For example: mandarinas/mandarins also from China, specifically from Mandarin China. tangerins form Tangier, Morroco. In Italy there is a soda orange drink called chinotto, from a specific orange that I read comes from China as well.

Here we use the word “bizcocho” for different types of cakes. Like a birthday cake is a “bizcocho de cumpleaños”. You probably call it “pastel”, but here in PR, the “pastel” is a delicious food very typical con Christmas, even though my family eat pasteles all year long lol

"Bizcocho" is usually meant for what is called in Mexico "Pastel" or "Cake" in English.

We teach in school the word naranja dulce for the sweet orange and naranja or anaranjado for the orange color, at least the teachers taught me that way in Puerto Rico.

You guys should come to San Sebastian to visit the waterfalls specially Gozalandia, thats 1 of the top 10 places to visit in Puerto Rico. Even movies were filmed there!

Maví it's made with the bark of the maví tree. I call It the beer of the poor lol. It's very refreshing. Bizcocho means cake. Birthday cake= bizcocho de cumpleaños. But don't say that word out of PR because in other countries is a bad word. Pastel in PR is a kind of tamal, but it's made with yautia ( a root like a sweet potato), green banana and chicken and pork. Delicious. Love what your doing.

El maví - palabra aguda y con acento en la Í - la bebida fermentada favorita de muchos y hasta de algunos adolescentes sin edad aún para comprar alcohol-cerveza pq además es dulce. Cuidado mucho te puede emborrachar. En Puerto Rico, BIZCOCHO es "CAKE" o pastel. (El "pastel" en Puerto Rico es solo el navideño y es comida, no dulce sino SAVORY.) Yummy! Esto y su video me dio hambre!

Mavi is a native Boriken today Puert Rico americas indigenous from this island natural drink my Boricua late grandfather my mom late father was making a very delicious cold Mavi and he was sale this drink very cold in his store long time ago in Carolina, Puerto Rico (Boriken) 😋🇵🇷

Dios mío!!! El refresco de raíz is so effin RARE!! The last time I had it was when I was six or seven years old. You guys are so lucky I wanna move back. I love maví too but when it’s a bit on the strong side and not so sweet.

Most Americans are familiar with Italian Biscotti which you would dip in your Caffe Latte. Biscotti is plural for Biscotto. It originated in Italy as twiced baked breads so they could last longer. Biscotto then becomes Biscocho in Spanish. The word Biscocho morphed in meaning from cookie or biscuit over time to become the word for cake in Puerto Rico.

Lo que sé, según cuentan las persona de edad avanzada, es que el nombre de china a la naranja en Puerto Rico, viene porque en los sacos donde se importaban las naranjas, decía el nombre donde fue hecho el saco, en china. De ahí, que los puertorriqueños le llamamos china. Esto es lo que me cuentan desde que era un niño. Algo similar pasa con el guineo (plátano, banana), que el empaque decía “guinea”.

Se dice Maví y en Puerto Rico decimos Mangó no Mango. Mango (sin acento) es el asa de una taza, maleta, puerta, olla, etc. Mangó (con acento) es la fruta. Y tiene Pepa ya que es una semilla grande. Como el aguacate que también tiene pepa.

The Puerto Rican Maví is not made out of maguey, it is made out of the bark of the Maví tree (Colubrina elliptica) otherwise known as Bejuco indio. There are other spices added to the flavor like anise and ginger, maybe that is why it tasted somewhat familiar. Is usually fermented but they also sell it on a non-fermented form. Other islands in the Caribbean have their own version and some call it Mauby,

you should try QUENEPAS (this is a fruit that only grows in the Caribbean), and also ACEROLA (this is a berry that only grows in the Caribbean and it's so good!)

Now I know, I used "China" in Spain. I got all the weird looks. I always thought it was some connection to Mandarin Oranges and the Mandarin language from China.

Correction: There were two types of oranges that became COMMON in PR. Sour oranges and sweet oranges. The sweet orange was called "naranja china". Sour oranges were called "naranja agria". The sweet one was more popular and was shortened to "china". The sour orange became way less popular and actually harder to find. Both were imported from China and came in bags with "China" stamped on them.

The Man you bought a maví is a friend of mine. He has a buzzer at the car and everytime I get to him i push a bottom white and that noizy buzzer ring and everyone around jump and I just started to laugh cause nobody expected that noise.
