Today I'm reacting to a very cool video my producer sent me of ‪@CharlesBerthoud‬ demonstrating the evolution of all bassists. Is it possible to make playing the bass look cool? I think Charles may be the person who is doing that. He is incredible.
Here is a link to his video: • Evolution of EVERY bas...

@@muenchhausenmusic way to put me on the spot 😂 first thing that comes to mind is Silversun Pickups - Panic Switch. The bass comes in with drama. It’s not meant to be something in the background, it’s a very forward, loud sound. It has passion, it has purpose. Not to say that background bass isn’t important, it’s just different. Nikki is such a queen of a bass player. Stefan Osdal of Placebo is also an amazing, dramatic bassist. Any sophisticated listener listening to a Placebo track will always follow the bass. The Bitter End is a great example.

@@muenchhausenmusic Joy Division (Disorder, Something must break, She lost Control in particular), and the Smiths (This Charming man) have pretty solid basslines. for something a bit more grimy and simple "TV on the Radio- Wrong Way" has a delicious dirty bassline that grooves hard.

@@muenchhausenmusic There is a saying about live shows from Bootsy Collins, "taking them to the church", referring to the intensity of the experience, the origin might from earlier Funkadelic, but it reflects how dramatic that space bass can be. @@moart87 Quite a few hard bass lines out there, as demonstrated in the video... Just because a lot of bands write and mix the bass into nothing does not mean it is boring to play. Honestly, I find playing bass to be more fun than guitar. Sure, it is not as flashy and it is not front and center in most songs, but it has so much versitility in the way you play it that you can make it sound completely different in a heartbeat. -Also, I can tell you have never played a healer seriously... Healing is some of the most stressful, busy stuff you can do in most major end games. Keeping idiots alive as well as paying attention to the fight mechanics, your rotations, tanks cooldowns, your cooldowns, and keeping yourself alive so you can keep everyone elso alive is a lot of work. Not to mention being blamed for everyone elses mistakes... Fun stuff lol

The only ppl who don't name Squire as the GOAT are those who haven't really listened to him yet. His bass playing is STILL REVOLUTIONARY --- 50 years later!!! That was fun!! I started playing bass about four years ago as something to fill the loneliness after my Wife of 17 years passed away. I found a Bass Player on KZfaq named Nicki Tedesco who is a professional player and writes and records her own music and we became friends, She since that time has moved to Maui from L.A. and holds court on Twitch for a dedicated bunch of followers every now and then. Why Bass? Well as a kid in Junior High, High School and then a few years after that I played trombone (still do) and it is in Bass Clef so I thought transferring would be easier, it wasn't but I've met so many cool players and had so much fun learning the basics of the instrument that it drug me up out of the depression I was in and has helped me cope and discover new music along the way.

Been a huge fan of Charles' KZfaq channel for quite some time (as i have this very channel). Absolutely incredible talent, and if it all fails for him he could easily stand in as a James Blunt look-a-like... 🤟

Playing with that many people is a wonderful experience. I once played open air in the streets of the City of London as part of an 800+ strong saxophone ensemble.

If you’re asking this question you’ve probably never seen MISA (Band Maid) F Chopper Koga (Gacharic Spin) or Fami (Lovebites). Haraguchisan (Nemophila) and Haru (Bridear) are also favorites of mine too.

Charles is a class act, in all senses of the world. He does not use technique just to show off technique, but always in service of his music. I grew up with bass, and the coolest bassist of my generation was Jack Casady of the Airplane and Tuna. Today, we have technical wizards- Mohini Dey, Federico Malaman, Charles, Vic Wooten, Hadrian Feraud, Davide Biale and many others.

Bass is one of my favourite sounds!! I've always assumed it was super cool just because that's the way I see it 😆 I especially lpve the 'Flea' & 'slap' phase....definitely my kind of funk 🤣

New bass player in Lovebites is certainly cool. In quite a few iconic songs it's the bass beat that makes the song great.

I'd love Justin to react to a Lovebites track, preferably a live one. He's been down the Japanese rabbit hole before, but I think they'd be well up his street.

Justin, could you please discuss the Rockin 1000? It all began in 2015 with a plan from a guy named Fabio Zaffagnini to convince to Foo Fighters to come and play in his town of Cesena, Italy. He organized it, they played ‘Learn to Fly’ and it went viral. His plan worked and the Foos went there and played and met with Fabio. During the show, Fabio crowd surfed all the way to the front and Dave had him sit on his guitar throne (Dave’s leg was broken at this time). There’s so much more to it than that, and you can find all the footage on KZfaq. (I would post the links for you, but I’ve tried to post links in a comment in the past and KZfaq deleted my comment.) In Turin, one month after Taylor died last year, the Rockin 1000 did a drums only tribute to Taylor. It was amazing - it makes me cry every single time. I believe they did another tribute to him in a stadium last May, and of course they’ve done numerous concerts and are still going strong! I don’t know of a greater example of the power and love of music than the Rockin 1000. I think everyone would enjoy this, I hope you will consider it! ❤
